Having just upgraded from a 3900x to a 9800x3d for dcs: yay. The openxr tools the setting "prefer frame rate over latency" also made a huge impact.

It’d be great to compare the 4080 Super with the 7900 XTX in VR like you did with iRacing, since 4080s and 5080s are currently unobtainable for normal price. And to see if the extra VRAM makes any difference in a busy track. Thanks for all your great work!

Extremely valuable information. Do you have any plans for a GPU comparison? One thing I am very curious about is how much VRAM you need to run dcs. Obviously this would depend on resolution/details.

I’m happy I have the 4080 super and 5800x3d
@imad19966 күн бұрын
The 9800X3D shows less RAM because the bios books some RAM for the integrated graphics and other devices. Each CPU deals with RAM differently. Nothing is wrong here.

Crap, I must have misconfigured the mobo between the AM5 runs. I doubt it matters much? But I'll do better next time.

Just noticed you have triple screens. I’d be really interested to see how that factors into performance across GPUs with varying amounts of VRAM/memory-bandwidth. All I know is that right now, with a 2080ti, my system is struggling hard to push the 11984x1440 resolution required for the triple monitors and external displays 😂. Was holding out for the 5090, but with the delays I’m considering the 7900XTX if it’ll get me a smooth experience.
@BenchmarkOdysseys3 күн бұрын
Do flight sim pilots use triple screens? I did some initial testing at the beginning of January, and it's tremendously GPU bound with DCS.
@adammilner96232 күн бұрын
@ I couldn’t begin to guess what percentage of DCS/MSFS users still do now that VR is an alternative but I know many stick to triples because VR makes it difficult to interact with physical hardware like WinWing’s MIP and PTO panels that have become popular the last couple of years. My own set up runs at a total resolution of 11984x1440p in order to export all of the DDI’s, IFEI and RWR for the Hornet. If my math is correct that’s got to be around 16MP or 62MB per frame, similar to running a 4K per eye VR headset, so quite demanding.

Hey You can get the Through the Inferno mission os DCS world website where the usere files are that should be better for testing I would think.. also the important metric is the GPU Frametime. say you are running 90Hz on the VR Headset you need to keep your frametime at or below 11.1ms. and it differes depending on the Hz you are running.. I would really like to see the new Intel Ultras in this list hopefully one day you will get your hands on one.. I forgot to add if the Frametime goes over 11.1 you end up with Stutter and the higher the worse it stutters. so maintaing a certain MS for your Hz rate is key to keeping it smooth in Vr.. soryy if you know this just wanted to add that bit..
@BenchmarkOdysseys7 күн бұрын
Thanks for the insight on 'Through The Inferno". I welcome anyone's track file for a demanding sequence! Yes, selecting resolution and graphics settings that are within your GPU's abilities is critical. So I did that, and ran this testing to compare CPUs.

I’d love to see 9900x or a 9950x to compare to see what the 3D cash does.
@BenchmarkOdysseys5 күн бұрын
Those have more cores, but that won't (usually) help with simulators that respond more to core throughput (Ghz and cache). 7600X vs 7800X3D showcases that. There have been architecture improvements so I think 9700K would outperform 5800X3D.
@Thorloar5 күн бұрын
@, I’m sure it won’t beat a 9800x3d but how close it comes is a question as it is much faster chip for productivity and so people with duel use cases might want to see how far off it is.

Thanks ! Same benchmark for gpu soon ? With some others games too ? (LMU, Rfactor2, ACC, No Man's Sky...) No Man's Sky is a very good test i think because it's a very bad optimised game for VR.
@BenchmarkOdysseys6 күн бұрын
Yes, I can put together a comparison of the GPUs I have with this track file. I'd rather focus on the new sims (LMU, RennSport, ACE) than circle back around to the older ones. I think LMU is a knockout blow to ACC, especially with VR support. It respect ACC leagues and private servers because it's cool to take ownership of that. NMS has come so far in content and expanse, it's astounding. It's completely outside my wheelhouse, however, much like Elite:Dangerous.

will you please benchmark 9800x3d with all cores running vs 9800x3d with just one core + one thread ? (the core + thread not being 0 and 1).... I believe you will get almost the same results .... you can do that from task manager setting affinity to just 2 and 3...
@BenchmarkOdysseys6 күн бұрын
Pardon? It's not wise to run less than 4 cores, considering the overhead of Windows and the VR software, plus what DCS needs.
@georgemathiellis54866 күн бұрын
@@BenchmarkOdysseys DCS runs 90% on one core and one thread .... On my PC (5800x3d) running DCS on more than 4 cores (two cores + two threads) on vr makes no difference ....
@BenchmarkOdysseys6 күн бұрын
@@georgemathiellis5486 Yup, that's similar to most other sims and games. Usually 4 and 6 core CPUs do not run faster clocks (base or boost) or have more cache than the bigger 8 core CPUs. I will take a closer look at DCS reliance on cores/threads the next time I bench a more demanding scenario.
@georgemathiellis54866 күн бұрын
@@BenchmarkOdysseys It is a pity to have a really expensive multi core CPU and a game that cannot take advantage of the number of cores....
@BenchmarkOdysseys6 күн бұрын
@@georgemathiellis5486 afaik, it's a limitation in engine and developer time. I'm not a programmer, but coding multiple parallel threads for physics and graphics rendering is nightmare. Synchronization is critical, because it will fall like a house of cards if something mis-computes. Considering the wide variety of user hardware and Windows configuration, that would contribute to problems that ED cannot take responsibility for. But I only understand this in layman terms.

Hi. Another great comparison. There is need to have 64gb of RAM for VR today? Im on Crystal using native resolution in Iracing and i cant see more usage than 16-17gb from my 32 sticks. I can see that You have 64, and 32-33 are used?? How come? Its is DCS?
@nibbler22816 күн бұрын
I had 32 and micro stutters, upgraded to 64 with slightly higher speed and it went away, currently DCS uses about 45ish GB when in VR sometimes.
@BenchmarkOdysseys6 күн бұрын
When using a monitor to render DCS, the RAM utilization is quite reasonable. But switching to VR... it like doubles! Even this simple mission easily consumes 32GB. I'm curious it see how high it can go with more complex scenarios. iRacing is pretty efficient with both system RAM and VRAM. The most I've seen consumed was Nordschleife 24 Hour Endurance event with over 50 cars, and it was around 22GB of system memory.
