Depends on the situation. If this is a problem, it probably means you're off tempo (check my tempo video). You probably should've been in the side lane EARLIER to push it out so you can be at the fight. Sometimes this isn't possible and you just want to be at the fight anyways, or maybe you just want to be in the side lane anyways. This completely depends on your champ and your team's wincons.

What if the game is a mid ARAM? Still stomping wave on T2 and flanking? Assuming there are no objectives up of course. Most of the times the team just commits to a fight that can't be won (low elo)

games often are ARAMs, knowing when and how to side lane better than the opponent is where we get our leads. Depends on your champ and the exact context, but yeah look to find ways to farm/play in that side lane then work your way into the fight rather than just doing what everyone else in low is doing!
