I've been watching amateur goalies (You, Trav, ETC) wear these Pro no break or single break pads. I see a similar issue that your butterfly does not have near enough flare for those straight pads to close the five hole. Your knee pads essentially close the five hole. I never see a pro goalie in his butterfly and still have a ten inch gap between the pads. Pro goalies wear this gear because it works great when you have the talent to use it. Non-pro goalies wear this gear because they see it worn by the pros.

It is great when people tell on themselves for never actually watching NHL goalies and not understanding how gear works or getting an idea of how people play hockey. The title card on this video shows the sealed pads when I drop into a butterfly. When they aren't sealed it is because there was never a butterfly attempted.
