Mental Outlaw makes somewhat good content. But I think he appeals to the extreme skitzo takes. After all. He is a Gentoo user.

I appreciate that you broke down this topic and went through the article. I was also at first awe struck, and even boosted a Toot and shortly after through some deduction realized that this was an inflammatory article with no real technical analysis. It's easy to fall for and this exercise helps us all keep facts in check when consuming content. Thanks for taking the time to show us your process.

Happy to help! I think it's important to explain the topic and for people to realize it can happen to anyone. The mentality of “that would never happen to me” is a quick way to set yourself up for failure.

Thank you for the inspirational video essay on checking yourself before spreading information, and quoting a source. I found your writing inspiring because your years of experience and ability to remain humble helps me reaffirm such great standards. It's no fun checking up such strong claims - It's not a lot of fun to make careful citations. wow, I have been following L. Rossmann since I think 2000 -2001, I remember at that time Ifix-it was just getting started. - - anyway I subscribed even though it doesn't mean much. Why was the article author wrong? Didn't Myst find that the process indeed connected to Apple servers in version 13.1, which is the version the article author used? I can understand why Apple would cal it a bug to try and avoid class action law suites. It sounds very intentional to me whatever Apple were sending to their servers.
@sideofburritos Жыл бұрын
The article was *technically* not wrong, but the way it was written was very misleading. The format was attempting to make the reader connect the singular finding by the author to CSAM scanning. The author never flat out said that, but that's how it was written.
@littlesandra87 Жыл бұрын
@@sideofburritos Then I don't understand your video. Yes, his article could have been written differently, but people are different and not everyone have the same writing skills and opinion on how articles should be structured. Just think back when you were in high school and had to write a report with someone else. Even the front page layout could be a big debate. Perhaps if the article were written the way you wanted it, it would never have gotten any attention? The media and Internet doesn't always react the way one wants it to =) Given he were the first to find that Apple sent/copied something to their servers that they wasn't suppose to, he deserves a lot of credit. had it not been for him Apple would still collect whatever information they wasn't suppose to. So I don't understand why you call his article FUD, when he was right in his finding.
@sideofburritos Жыл бұрын
It's not about how I want an article to be structured. It's about an author intentionally including information in their article in a way to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt. The technical findings were interesting, and could have been communicated in the first few paragraphs. The additional paragraphs that were added were there strictly to make the reader relate two unrelated events.

Yes, Apple is using the neural network (RNN-T chip) built into all iPhones now for Siri AND deep learning. That chip is constantly analyzing everything on your phone and creating a HASH and sending it to Apple. That HASH (in Apples hands) can be used to match anything from color of clothes, people, places, etc. No actual data or personal files are sent. Apple gets away with this because the dirty work happens locally on the phone with the RNN-T chip. This dirty HASH trick is the same way they do vax pass, contact tracing or Airtags. Now that the neural network is actually hardware on the phone, it’s doing all the heavy lifting. Rob Braxman explains it very well.

Sorry man but I’m not sure this is just FUD. I’ve experienced it myself when plugging in an external hardware. Sometimes the internal HDD and fan kicks in and I CANNOT safely eject the drive. If I just unplug the drive the scan will continue when i replug it back in. It’s pretty obvious what apple is doing here
@sideofburritos Жыл бұрын
Depending on your setup external drives are indexed by spotlight for searching or other services. If it's a new drive, or you have changed a lot of data, it needs to be re-indexed. There are many variables that could be causing that.
