In this video, I am covering how to side pass a horse for beginners. This is a wonderful skill to learn that will help you advance in your riding and strengthen the relationship between you and your horse. To start you want to begin on a fence or rail and graduate to practicing without. I cover how to teach a horse to side pass along with some exercises I recommend to make it easier for your horse to learn.
If you are learning how to side pass a horse I hope these tips help. Feel free to leave a comment with any questions 😊 Talk to you in the next video!

Beautiful said! I watched a different video that I could not even get through, it actually broke my heart. The rider was confusing the heck out of me, can't imagine how the poor horse felt. Watching your video was very clear and LOGICAL!! Thank you for sharing.

Do you keep your leg on the entire time for constant pressure or just kinda pulse with your ankle to nudge him over? I've seen it both ways depending on how sensitive the horse is.

Hi Rachel, Great question 😊 It is true that the amount of pressure you use with your leg can vary depending on how sensitive the horses. I apply pressure till my horse moves and release it the second he shifts or moves🐴

Great video, just a little confusing. How the horse knows the difference between moving side or moving just forward, it's still a leg cue/pressure. Do we put our legs in a certain position, different than the forward cue position?

Yes its lighter and more steady/gradual and to decide position I imagine the part i am trying to move like how you turn your wheel when driving a car... obviously you are not right on top of each wheel but you know by how much you turn, you can imagine the position of the wheel even though you can't look at them when driving. It's a similar concept, i.e. you will want to put your leg a bit further behind you when moving their hind end and slightly more forward when moving the front end. A lot of it is natural, and seeing how your horse responds to certain leg movements. Practice the same position/pressure over and over until you get the desired response and then reward them/back off and repeat. Pick one position and do it over and over until they get it then try the other side before trying to move to a different part.
