Better yet bring a four wheeler with an attachment to haul a lawn mower, chain saw, brooms, rakes, concrete for repairs, shovels, flowers, flags, etc.,...invite the local folks/veterans VFW...a cooler with cold drinks and snacks. Take pictures, get gps coordinates and post to the Cemetery online. Make a grand and satisfying productive day of it. A day of that kind of good sweat and dirt would be extraordinary.

It's a shame that it happens, and can't be helped, but like you said, the family just can't do it anymore. Years ago I got to help my aunt and uncle clean up the cemetery in Minnesota, where my grandfather (whom I never had the privilege of meeting) and grandmother (who, at that time, was still living) and a whole lot of my relatives are buried. The weeds were literally shoulder high but when we got done I felt good that the cemetery was clean once again. I got to read my grandpas headstone and it kind of felt like I got to meet him, sort of. You guys do good work.

There's a civil war Veteran buried in this overgrown cemetery! Can't the historical society at least maintain his grave? Very good video, so much energy spent by y'all. Nice to see the 3 amigos together again 🙂 Happy Christmas and may 🎅 leave gifts of appreciation under your tree.

Mary this is unfortunately more common then you may thing. A group of us veterans had the privilege of helping out putting flags on veterans graves and discovered some stones that were over grown and had trees growing over and around then. One of them was a medal of honor recipient. We were horrified that this had happened, so we cleared it and its now mowed and kept up.

T. J. HU (Thomas J. Hutchinson) died at age 19 in 1851. He had two brothers who fought in the Civil War. James became a Captain and moved to Texas. Nathanial was a wealthy plantation owner who fought for 2 months, then hired a substitute to fight in his place. Nathanial has a grand monument grave in Whitesville at Union Baptist church.

A wealthy man would often pay a substitute $300 to $400 to serve for them. That equates to currently over $10,000. It was common practice. In records you will find plenty.

@@cherrysmart3500 That was a common practice. The price was usually around $300. Poor men would take the money, desert and repeat to provide for family left at home. The explanation y'all gave at the end was spot on! I think many people who have never lived in the "deep south" parts of the US likely don't realize how incredibly fast vegetation grows there. I lived in east Texas for several years, it looked exactly like many of these overgrown places in your videos. Because of the tropical moisture that comes up out of the Gulf of Mexico, the plants, bushes, and trees in the southeastern US grow super fast. It doesn't take much time at all for Mother Nature to begin reclaiming land that people haven't been doing anything with. You fellas are awesome, keep up the great work!
@SondraD76763 жыл бұрын
This graveyard, more than most others you have documented, certainly has a variety of headstones, markers and burial techniques - It seems to have examples of every kind that were used. What a shame that so many are broken. That was one of the most heartbroken epitaphs on that baby's grave I have heard. Its still amazing how you can read the land, Robert. Examples like this are why I put forth great effort to take care of a family cemetery and from long distance, and when I am gone, it will likely fall to ruin and be lost to time.

It is hoped that this place, is brought to the attention of the appropriate agencies, so that the people placed, will not be forgotten again. Is this being brought to the notice and uploaded to grave marker web site, and or archeological web site, for families to find? Has anyone done this with the wagon trails that crossed through the plains and deserts as the people travelled to the states out west, and can this be expanded to the native sovereign nations if any of them are found? Or if they find something? Cultures need to be remembered, as their voices of hopes and dreams, for themselves and others, live on inside of us present, and in our offspring.

I love that you are very interested in saving these forgotten and almost forgotten let unkempt cemeteries. I have tried to instill in my family the importance of keeping these cemeteries from being lost before their time. We have a couple of consecutive farms and 2-3 buried urns ⚱️ but I travel before Memorial Weekend to put pretty flowers on my relatives markers and I spend hundreds of dollars on them because without keeping their memories alive and well maintained how can I expect my children and grandchildren to remember and maintain my husband and mine taken cared for us. My grandchildren love to go with and only in one cemetery when they asked did you know this person I can say yes to quite a few of them! It gives them memories. From Wisconsin USA Merry Christmas to all of you and your families! Keep up the great work!

Yes taking photos of the stones and locating each grave possible is a blessing to the families. Even if not able to maintain the graves much, an annual clearing of saplings and berry and thorn vines is helpful. Maybe civic groups can adopt a really bad-looking cemetery to do the work or raise funds to hire a crew to do the clear-up and put broken stones on their plots.

My husband has ancestors buried in Pitts Cemetary in Eastern Washington. It was almost impossible to find, finally a farmer told us how to get there. We found the grave markers had been damaged over time so we planned another trip over in a few months time to do repairs. Well in that amount of time this most horrid weed had just about covered everything. We finally found the grave of Maywood Lynch. We had to bring water, concrete, and spent some time removing all those wicked weeds. This was about ten years ago so who knows what it looks like now! But, it was not an easy thing to do what with no water on site. The funny thing is when we git home I found out more ancestors were buried there! Maywood died about 1889?
