Interesting fact about North Fork: Anne Bredon was a resident of North Fork. She designed beaded jewelry there. Her life was a rather slow one for sure. Anne was born in 1930, and grew up during the World War II years. She passed away in 2019 at the age of 89. Until her passing, you could have taken your original Led Zeppelin album so that Anne Bredon could have autographed it for you while you were there. Anne Bredon, the 89 year old grandmother who made beaded jewelry in the little town of North Fork, California, was the actual person who wrote the song "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You." Led Zeppelin never acknowledged or gave her credit for being the author of that song.

Your trip to the center of California reminds me of my trip to find Jesse Chisholm's Grave in Oklahoma. I drove on a US highway, then a county road, a township road (gravel) and finally two ruts in the grass. The road ended on the top of a small rise. Found the headstone about 150 ft down the hill. So I walked thru the knee high grass in Oklahoma in August to see the headstone. Went back to my car and went around a bend and ran over a 6' ft Western Diamondback.

The Heart of Texas (aka the center of Texas) is near Brady, Texas. Now, it’s important to note that the center marker was not placed at the exact center of the state. That’s 5 miles northwest on private property, the marker points out. So, if you visit the marker, you’ll also want to drive about a quarter of a mile south and pull into the Heart of Texas Park, complete with a few picnic tables and a small observation tower you can climb to see the true center amid the rolling hills, oak and mesquite trees, round hay bales, and cattle. Giddy Up!

The scenery at the center point is appropriately classic California rolling hills with oaks dotting grassland. ~ This seems like a great project for your channel. As you mentioned, what appears fairly simple and straightforward, may occasionally be quite an adventurous enterprise.

I’ve heard that the way it was determined is to get a cardboard map of California and balance it on the tip of a pencil. At the spot where it is fully balanced on the pencil is the center of the State. I think that would work for other states too.
@SidetrackAdventures3 жыл бұрын
After doing some research on this it looks like some places use that method to make the claim while others use different methods. Oregon has two places claiming to be the center for that reason.

For District of Columbia, originally the area was 10x10 miles Square with land taken from Maryland and Virginia. When this was the case, the exact center of DC was under the US Capitol Rotunda. Since the Virginia part was returned in the 1840s, the center of DC is now in a different location.

That my friend, is NO Pine Tree; it is a Deodar Cedar, a TRUE Cedar, native to the Himalaya Mountain Range, and it does VERY well, as an ornamental tree, throughout the Pacific West. It sure must have taken some very fancy Trigonometry/Geometry/Calculus, for those Cartographers/Surveyors/Engineers of yore, to compute this location. With California being such a funny shape, I don't expect that it was all that easy. And, it also may actually be MORE accurate, than what GPS may tell us.

The geographic center of Wisconsin is about 9 miles southeast of Marshfield, Wisconsin (most likely in a farm field), but the center of the northern hemisphere (where North America is located) is also in a farm field, but a small parking lot and info sign (maintained as a very small park) is nearby on Meridian Road just outside (northwest) of the tiny hamlet of Poniatowski, Wisconsin in Marathon County, Wisconsin.

When you leave North Fork you take Mammoth Pool road. Go 4.5 miles, at the RV park (Mammoth RV Park) turn right you're on Italian Bar road. BUT these roads also are Numered so you rarely see a road Name. And No One knows the numbers. I lived at this interesection and the general area for 18 years and never knew a number. A friend lives 5 miles past the intersection and he doesn;t know the number assigned to Mammoth Pool rd.... He's lived there since 1969. And just before the Center of Ca you pass "The Spiggots" where a sign says something like '5 Drips and a drop". They feed turkeys and I've seen over 50 turkeys at the place. In 2018 we pulled a c.1936 Chevy out of the debris, it was to become a yard ornament. Only a handfull of people live past the intersection. Dan Gamel of RV / Fitness Fame lived about 15 miles up, had an apple orchard but 2 yrs ago he moved down near town where the mill site is . Other exciting North Fork Facts are it's home to Sam Peckenpah, Edwin Kemper, and South Fork Ca has a 4 room motel....

For Arizona the exact center of this state is just north of Phoenix. From Camp Creek take N. Sever Spring Rd to Mashakettee Canyon onto National forest Road NFR254. It's in the mountains north of Phoenix in the middle of nowhere but accessible by car if the forest road is maintained?
