Sid top 5 no question. As the one guy mentioned golden goal 2 time reigning Olympic champ, world cup, world jr, 3 Stanley's. Art ross, Richard multiple times. CENTERMAN. LEADER. TWO WAY player. And persevered through targeted head shots THROUGHOUT his career, even last year with Trouba DEF intentionally elbowing him in the head. Again. Niskanen crosscheck, Steckel head check in 2011 winter classic. It goes on. Broken jaw. Etc etc etc.

@@Billybob-eo5vf Lemieux as well….if he doesn’t miss as much time as he did he probably puts a lot of pressure on Gretzky for #1. Injuries are obviously apart of the game and you just kinda have to deal with it but it’s interesting to think about how we’re talking about Crosby if he doesn’t miss so much time. sorry thats just not true. Mario was never going to move them, and they already had Geno who would have been the franchise star. Sid helped for sure, but Mario is the reason they got a new arena and stayed in Pitt. Sid helped the franchise really cement itself, but if there was any other owner then Sid would be like KD for Seattle. The great young player you saw for a year before your team moved.

Personally I think that the "Greatest of All-Time" rankings are kind of a wash because the game has changed so much over the last decade or two. It's almost unfair to compare guys like Sid and Ovi to guys like Gretzky and Orr because the game is so different to what it was like in the pre-2000's era. That being said, in the spirit of playing along, I think when it's all said and done and Sid hangs up the skates, he'll be considered Top 5 by most if not all (unbiased) people.

No one will ever get numbers like Gretz and Lemieux, and a BUNCH of guys got before the 2000s, it's simply not possible anymore. Goalies were so easy to score on and players didn't train nearly as hard as they do today, that's why these list are so stupid. You have to start making a case for Ovechkin. I mean he’s potentially going to have the record for most goals in NHL history. That will make him the greatest there ever was on the most important aspect of the game. Furthermore, he’s won the Calder trophy over Sid, 9 rocket Richard trophies, 3 hart trophies, 3 Ted lindsay trophies, an art Ross trophy, a Stanley cup & the conn smythe trophy. Like cmon, what more does a player need to accomplish individually. Don’t get me wrong, Sid is a fantastic player, top 10 for sure. However, if we base it solely on the individual and his personal career, I don’t see how we still have Sid over Ovechkin. At this point, the two extra cups and the gold medal over a 18+ year period, shouldn’t hold as much merit. With that mentality, Jean Beliveau should be the greatest player ever and Dryden should be the greatest goalie ever. Not many will agree right? If Ovechkin was Canadian, he would be the golden boy. Instead, he was criticized for most of his early career in the North American media and I feel like that hurt his legacy a tad. I’m sure in the Russian media he wasn’t criticized as much and on their lists they have him above Crosby.
@bignico05
@bignico05 Жыл бұрын
@ThisIsALongDrive I kindly disagree with you. Team success shouldn’t be more relevant than personal stats when discussing the greatest PLAYERS of all time. Look at McDavid, he’s having the best season he’s ever had this year and the oilers might not even make the playoffs. Does that mean he’s not the best in the world right now? Moreover, how were the caps loses in the playoffs largely Ovechkin’s fault? In 33 less playoff games, Ovi has more goals than Crosby. He also has more playoff goals & points than Patrick Kane & Jonathan Toews, and those guys have 3 cups also. Weird eh? Where the early penguins exits Crosby’s fault? Is the penguins recent struggles and subpar record this year Crosby’s fault? They’ve only won 3 games in their last 10. Should we talk about that? Furthermore, saying Ovi doesn’t make players around him better is just silly. Look at Tom Wilson last year playing on the same line. Career numbers! Would he have those same numbers playing on the first line of the Montreal Canadiens? I doubt it. Unfortunately, since Ovechkin isn’t North American, the media here, Canada and the US, has depicted him negatively saying he’s not a winner, he’s selfish, can’t be coached... you name it for so long and that weighs heavily on people’s minds instead of giving him his well deserved dues. I guarantee you that his teammates don’t feel the same way. I guarantee you that in the Russian media they rank him in the top 5. It is what it is.
@bignico05
@bignico05 Жыл бұрын
@ThisIsALongDrive Let’s agree to disagree. At the end of the day, there’s no factual ranking, just personal opinions. At this point in time, my opinion is that Ovechkin had a better career. They’re both phenomenal players, but Ovechkin is chasing history. If he passes Gretzky, that will be one of the top moments in NHL history. The record will be cemented forever and if it stands for over 50 years, he will be remembered for it. No recent bias, no excuse, Ovechkin will be talked about as the greatest goal scorer. While Crosby, long in to the future, will have no records to be remembered by, recent bias will no longer be in affect and all his accomplishments, despite being great, won’t be talked about. Unless you’re a huge fan, nobody will be talking about his gold medal or one of the Stanley cups he won 60 years ago. If you’re Russian, German, Sweden, or a Detroit fan and so on, you’re not going to rank Crosby’s moments as top 5 NHL HISTORY moments. Ovechkin, whether you’re Canadian, Finnish... you have to accept he’s number 1 of all time and that that moment is going down in history. Overall, I think it’s a better career to have, personally speaking.

His stats were on par and worse than many players especially in an area that saw scoring of 8 goals on average a game with few teams in league. The other top players had protection for christ sake, OV one of the dirtiest players. Slashed SID in back of the head, across the hand. Ov not even close

If Ovi breaks the goals record I think you have to give him the edge over Sid. Goals are more valuable than assists. Whole point of the game is to score more goals. Goals don’t get counted as more Valuable, but they should. Especially because each goal can have 2 assists. Secondary assist === Goal ?? Questionable

If you're creating opportunities for your linemates to score goals instead , that can't be overlooked. Sure Ovi scored more goals but Sid got more points in fewer games and won more ultimate prizes than Ovi by being the better overall player. 3 cups + 1 gold medal > 1 cup. Ovi scores 2-3 goals, Crosby gets his team to score to score 3-4 goals. Both generational players but Sid is the better player overall.

@@split_the_bill appreciate the civil conversation 🙏 I heard an interesting conversation regarding ovi vs sid. If Ovi breaks Gretzkys record, you could easily argue hes had the better CAREER. He'll forever be known as the greatest goal score where as Crosby will never be seen as better than lemieux or gretzky. However you can than argue that Crosby was the better player however. It certainly is a very interesting n divisive debate. Happy holidays bud

Jagr was more dominant than Crosby, ovechkin or yzerman. He flat out took over games and dictated the play when he was on the ice. He won art ross trohy’s while Lemieux and Gretzky were still in the league. Has to be higher rated in the top 5

@@malkinmalone Yeah Jagr didn’t miss his 3 prime seasons because of a concussion and a lockout/broken jaw, you would be looking at 4 120 point Sid seasons as well with better luck. Jagr did do everything your saying I watched his entire Penguins tenure I’m aware but Crosby still had a better point per game average from 18-35 lmao Jagr couldn’t defend a pylon and Crosby won us back to back cups by shutting down teams top lines night in and night out, Crosby is the superior player

@@hellofalife9495 in what category? Not points. Not unvariables. Certainly they’re comparable in leadership qualities. And definately not “with ease”. Sakic had unmatched skill. @@lannon4prez Crosby has accomplished much more than both individually and has more cups than Sakic and the same amount as Yzerman while having 2 Conn Smythes they have one each. Crosby has more playoff points in basically the same amount of games as both, despite playing in a lower scoring league. He’s also the better offensive player than both and will undoubtedly pass up Sakic in points and possibly Yzerman despite missing the absolute best years of his career to concussions. Crosby’s gone 17 straight years of being a point per game player and it’s almost guaranteed he’ll finish his 18th above point per game. Only Gretzky will have more with 19, Gordie Howe is the only other player with 17.

@@hellofalife9495 both sakic and yserman were point a game players throughout the dead puck era so that argument is null. Both led their teams to stanley cups. Crosby has accomplishments, sure.
