The defenders could have one this but I feel like they got way to confident at the end and just started throw soldiers at them. I know the feeling. When your defender and one point you got more soldiers. Doesn't mean you turn into the attackers, and give up good positions.

Lore of this battle during the forth age ruhn was able to defeat dale and occupy them they then marched on dol guldur before finding bands of orcs mainly from gundabad and they all marched on towards dol guldur the elves in The fortress called for aid and the orcs came to help them

The fortress itself wasn’t and elven settlement it was created by sauron the hill it was built on which used to be called Amon Lanc was the original settlement of the wood elves when they were ruled by king oropher, Thranduils father
