If it wasn't for the ending, it would have been fine. If the takeaway from the movie was "She did horrible stuff and we know it was horrible stuff and now she has to pay for it and is learning to be better" I wouldn't have minded it. But they had to go and give her a REWARD for her horrible deeds, and that's what made me go..nope. This is trash and teaches young girls all the wrong lessons.

yeah, like if she had been called out for doing that at the end and the movie clearly pointed out "You did something horrible", and then she AT LEAST lost the guy then it could've been a good movie. But nah let's reward her at the end for all the shitty things she did, even though it was Veronica who at the end fixed everything for her and Sierra DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING APOLOGIZE TO EITHER OF THEM PROPERLY. "Oh yeah I'm sorry I catfished you but you don't know what it's like to look like me" BITCH YOU'RE NOT EVEN SORRY, APOLOGIZE PROPERLY AND STOP VICTIMIZING YOURSELF.

This movie is based on a play called Cyrano de Bergerac. bebebebota11 But Veronica had a good solid reason to act out like that, unlike Sierra she had an abusive family and a self absorbed mother only concerned with her daughters looks. Veronica was only acting out because of that and truthfully none of what she did was THAT bad. She was right Sierra is a loser, and even more than that she’s just a naive girl who wants help. Yes Sierra is a horrible person and it’s not good to be involved with her but the whole movie she was just manipulating Veronica to do whatever she wanted her to making her think it’d help her. And let’s be honest what was the worst that could happen to him? He calls the number, he finds out it’s fake, like there was no magnitude to that.

Imagine if it went like this: Sierra talks with the guy, being her authentic self for a long time, but doesn’t know that Noah thinks it’s Veronica he is talking to. They don’t send pics or video call or do anything that requires sending pics to each other. Noah starts liking her through her texts. Sometime between the start and this, Sierra starts tutoring Veronica and they develop a friendship. Then, finally, Noah and Sierra (who still doesn’t know that Noah thinks it’s Veronica he’s talking to) decide to meet one day. To his surprise, it’s not Veronica that arrives, but Sierra. He feels cheated on (cause she’s not Veronica, doesn’t have anything to do with how she looks) and Sierra feels cheated on too. Sierra goes home and gets mad at Veronica cause she thinks it’s Veronica’s fault that Noah ditched her. She thinks that Noah doesn’t like her and thinks that the reason he doesn’t like her is because she’s not conveniently attractive and not because she’s not who he thought she was (I feel like lack of conventional beauty and insecurity goes hand in hand, or at least it does for me). Anyway, Veronica feels like it wasn’t her fault that this all happened and she and Sierra stop talking. Then, the song part happens and she sends it to both Noah and Veronica. Noah ignores her text but Veronica listens to the song, feels bad and she and Sierra apologize to each other. Then Veronica goes to Noah and apologizes to him as well and tells everything that happened. He accepts her apology but still feels like Sierra was cat-fishing him because there must’ve been an instance when he called her Veronica, right? He still decides to listen to the song Sierra sent and also decides to go through their conversations so that he can point out he called her Veronica, but realizes that they never called each other by their name other than when Noah introduced himself to Sierra but somehow Sierra hadn’t introduced herself because she forgot and Noah didn’t realize that because to him, she was Veronica. While going through their texts (and listening to the song), Noah’s feelings for Sierra resurface and so, he meets with her and apologizes for ditching her and not hearing her side of the story. Sierra apologizes for accidentally catfishing him and not giving her side of the story. Then they kiss or whatever. This would mean that all the problematic things would not remain in the movie and Sierra would be a redeemable character and easy to root for.

Modernly people point that out (and they're right) but in it's day, the nerd was celebrated for his sexual prowess. Today (with Sierra) they wrote a really bad attempt at "liking someone for their personality". Unfortunately, her personality is liar, deciever, and general obsessive/rape-y/stalker-y behavior. Not to mention petty (hacking Veronica's social media). So it's not like it's even a good "cool guy notices uncool girl" cute teen rom-com. It's just wrong this character is "rewarded" at the end for being a terrible person.

This is a really bad Cyrano adaptation. So originally it was an (unattractive) guy trys to woo girl. And in one of those Revenge of the nerds movies the nerdy guy wins the girl by having sex with her in costume (while she thinks he's someone else). And then is wooed by the sex and forgives what is basically rape. So this concept has been done in teen movies with a male protaganist. The non consensual kiss is pretty wrong and gross. The character is unredeemable. As a fat girl who had a tough time in high school I am embarrassed by this movie. One second Sierra's this confident body positive person, but then by the middle she is like "cry for me because fat girls lives suck in comparison to skinny girls". And she's seen Veronica's life, which actually does suck. Sierra has 2 loving parents. But "they don't understand cause they conventionaly attractive in high school". *Gag* Agree, Sierra is a loser for what she did. Not cause she's a chubby girl. (And this is the opinion of a chubby girl who watched this movie randomly).

Yes. They took the basics of the play and kinda removed everything that made the three main characters interesting and ignored the reasons Cyrano was a compelling character and what makes the story to be heartbreaking at the end. Does a horrible job of getting the play's message across. And why you wanted Cyrano, Roxanne, and Christian to all be happy in the end.
@SirEriol
@SirEriol 4 жыл бұрын
At least Cyrano was polite enough to die without the woman he pined for. Sierra Burguess couldn't even do that. But guess I can't blame her for being so awful, she's a bit fat and therefore she's entitled to being a garbage person.
@TheDawnofVanlife
@TheDawnofVanlife 4 жыл бұрын
@pun:c 10 things I hate about you is based on taming of the shrew, but it also takes place in a modern (at the time) high school. So there are expected changes for the format and time period. And there are a dozen such adaptations like this because you can admit being influenced by them because no one owns the copyright and no one can sue you. You can do a Romeo and Juliet in space where they both live and it's still basically based on Romeo and Juliet. You can place Hamlet in NYC and have Denmark be a Business instead of a country and his dad still be alive and symbolically haunt him from like a mental institution and it's still based on Hamlet. There's a reason why many small theater companies start with the classics...they are free to use and CHANGE without consult to the very dead author. Modern plays are not. My point stands, I never said it was a line for line lift of the play.

It wasn't just bad it was just mean to people like me who were expecting the classical hot guy to fall for the nerdy not attractive looking according to society girl. They sold that in the trailer and then it was the opposite.

It is just so "clumsy" as a movie. For example, when Sierra hides under the car and she crawls out from under the car so she can kiss the guy --> it does not make sense and it just does not work. It is so far-fetched and that is part of the reason why it is difficult to have sympathy for her. It is so false of a scene and it is hard to adopt any suspension of disbelief. Usually, in films, you can allow for "coincidence" or similar. It is hard to relate to the scene because you just feel so awkward and it is actually very cringe-worthy.
@MissCaraMint
@MissCaraMint 3 жыл бұрын
I suspect that it’s supposed to be the balcony scene from the original play. In that the veronica character ( exept it’s a man because they changed the genders for this adaprion) stood under the balcony to recite poetry to the love interest character (i forgett, but the original one’s name is Roxane). Of course «Veronica» cant quite hear the poetry the Sierra character is wispering to her so will mess up, and it’s very funny. Now in the original the Sierra character is genuenly trying to set these two characters up to be together. She thinks they will make a better couple than him and herself. And both have expressed interest in each other indipendantly to Sierra. So yeah. A very different narrative. The original would have been so much better.

@@alexkennedy1820 Yes _Cyrano de Bergerac_ by Edmond Rostand. It’s actually a fictionalisation of a real person, and let me tell you it has some of the best insults in history. Some guy makes fun of Cyranos nose, and Cyrano’s just like «really? Big nose is all you could come up with?» and starts rattelig off all the insults he could have said. Then he composes poetry whle he duels the guy into submition. It is glorious, and establishes him as one of the most badass heros in history. You can see Steve Martin’s modern adaptation of the story which is pretty cute. It’s called _Roxane._ Be warrend though that the original actually ends in tragedy. It’s supposed to be a morality play about how telling this lie is wrong even though Cyrano was genuenly trying to make these two happy. Edti: _Roxane_ doesn’t have a tragic ending. That’s a romantic commedy through and through. _Cyrano de Bergerac_ is probably the most well known French play ever, and you WILL recognize at least one scene from modern pop culture. That Balcony scene is for example frequently refferenced.

This movie is based off a classic French play and it really irritates me that they thought it would be a good idea to make Sierra a catfish when the main character in the original play isn’t a catfish. I watched this movie with high hopes but it didn't take long to see that it was trash... I kinda laugh when I realized that they made a movie about catfishing... When she yelled at mother about how she isn't pretty I was done with the movie but still finished it... Her mom did nothing to deserve that rant because she did nothing but support her... If her mother was like Veronica's I could see her going off on her but she wasn't... She never looked down on her or made her feel inferior for not being "pretty". She just loved her. This just showed that her insecurities came solely from herself and nothing else! The whole thing was more like how many people can Sierra piss off before writing a song to make it all better! They made her more awkward then she needed to be... If they showed the guy sort of falling in love with her when they met outside of the phone conversations and have him realize that he liked her more then Veronica and the "fake" conversations I could understand when it came to light that she was who he was talking to the whole time...

I have two alternative endings that could have made this movie somewhat bearable... 1: If the directers REALLY wanted this to be how the movie plays out and wont budge... have everyone hate her. Have no one forgive her. Have her lose her chance of going to a good university. Show that your bad actions will not give you good outcomes. Catfishing wont give you the man of your dreams. 2: Have the movie play out the same, Veronica gives the guy Sierra's number. At first she plays along, fantasying although very much aware of reality. But as it progresses, She admits she is not veronica. The boy is mad and he begins talking to veronica, however he realises he doesnt like veronica. Yes she's pretty, but she can't hold up a convo like sierra, she isnt as engaging mentally like sierra is and so in the end the boy does go back to Sierra, as a statement like, "Looks aren't everything, I like you for you." At the same time Sieera would be suffering the repercussions of her cat fishing. Maybe her best friend ditches her, the rumour spreads around school, its affecting her chances for uni, etc. At this point she can start focusing on herself. Finding what makes her happy. A new look, diving into skin care and learning to look after herself. She doesnt have to physically change but her mental outlook on herself will give her a more confident and positive vibe. And in return everything she lost will slowly piece itself back together once Sierra accepts who she is and embraces herself.

I hate that people are comparing this movie to Cyrano de Bergerac without mentioning that Cyrano; 1. wasn't an asshole & 2. didn't assault Roxanne. Cyrano feeds Christian his lines for Christian & Roxanne's benefit because he genuinely believes they'll be happy together, not in the hopes of conning Roxanne into falling in love with him instead. Cyrano projecting his own shallowness onto Roxanne is the biggest factor in thwarting his chances with her and it's his pride that prevents his character growth and leads to the unhappy ending. In comparison, Sierra is rewarded for her pride with recognition and validation from her peers -which is not and has never been how anything happens in high school, ever. Like I'm sorry but if a kid shirked a poetry assignment and sung a song instead they would be the subject of derision and mockery and never live it down. Instead, Sierra gets the jock, which isn't even narratively satisfying, because she went through no character growth whatever and did nothing to earn it. It's not the same story, even if it does have some of the same beats.

FYI, the story this was originally based on, the catfisher actually was a man named Cyrano de Bergerac. The story was that he had such a huge nose that no woman wanted him. Sierra's name is clearly a nod to the source material (Sierra sounds like Cyrano, and Burgess was the name of the man who translated the play into English). Cyrano was a great writer, so he used a handsome "Chad" to woo a woman using his words. And no, it is not creepier with a male as the lead because Cyrano, while creepy, is also sensitive and has a good sense of humor. Unlike Sierra, he is actually a good writer, so it is more understandable that someone falls for his words alone. Oh, and Cyrano was a nobleman with money and a position in the military, making it more believable that someone would consider overlooking his creepy catfishing. Oh, and in the source material, Cyrano does NOT get the girl. She doesn't even realize she was catfished until years later.

I know it's been a long time since this movie and the controversy behind it, but I was on a Amanda the Jedi videos binge watch so I was watching this video again and I feel like the movie would have been better off if Sierra and Jamie parted ways after he finds out the truth, because the things she did were really terrible, or maybe she could have given him Veronica's number, because he did like her first and they could have cut to a few years later, and Sierra has been working on being a better person (and that doesn't have to mean losing weight if she's works on loving herself more and is healthy) and bumps into Jamie somehow, and they talk about how things between him and Veronica didn't work, and Sierra asks him to be friends so she can do her best to mend what she has done and gain his trust again, and that can lead to them getting together in the end, and her and Veronica being friends, because she acknowledges that she was a bad person and feels bad for the things she did, NOT like they chose to end it... As a plus size girl, who is only in the process of losing weight because it has caused me health issues first and foremost, and I also want to feel comfortable in my skin and like what I personally see in the mirror, this movie did an awful job at helping me accept myself in any way, and if I was a teenager, maybe it would have lead me to think catfishing someone is okay to do. It's NOT OKAY to catfish someone, regardless of what gender is doing it (she even sexually assaulted him) and if this movie wanted to spread a message, in a way it did so, because it has me saying to people to do the opposite of what Sierra did... sorry for the rant, but this movie still pisses me off to this day...

Honestly I kind of loved Insatiable for how batshit insane and stupid it was? Like the whole show is just showcasing how crazy the main character is and we basically see her become a literal monster and get away scotfree because she's a literal psychopath and it's amazing. It had nothing to do with body positivity. In that sense this movie and Insatiable are pretty similar. The main character is a terrible, awful person but gets rewarded for it but where Insatiable recognizes that and relishes in showing us just how awful all the things that happen are, this movie just goes "yes, this is great and something to strive for" which is disgusting.
