Sierra Hull Interview

Sierra Hull began playing the mandolin at the age of eight and put out the album Angel Mountain at 10. Hull was soon playing jam sessions with other musicians in her family, and by 2001 she was entering local talent contests. Her parents, Stacy and Brenda, took her to numerous bluegrass festivals and it was during an International Bluegrass Music Association festival that she came to the attention of Rounder Records chief talent scout Ken Irwin. At age 11 she was mentored and befriended by Alison Krauss, herself once a child prodigy on the fiddle. Berklee shcool of Music gave her the school's most prestigious award, the Presidential Scholarship, a first for a bluegrass musician. Besides being one of the hottest young mandolinist, Sierra is also a gifted song writer, and sings and fronts her own band, Highway 111. She has already received five International Bluegrass Music Association nominations in the past three years.

Wow that's so cool, I got to meet and play with her last year!!! Probably a few weeks after this interview!!! It was amazing!!! She gave me really good advice and helped me become more confident!!

Just to say this is a particularly nice experience put together by Mel Bay, and interestingly with an interviewer in of similar age range. There's a range of material showing what might be on an early instruction through what's unmistakably hot. Songwriting and futures are well in view, while Sierra's playing speaks as it always does - opening all sorts of directions, and opening doors. Really liked this..

Oh my god, I've never heard Sierra speak before. That Kentucky drawl just melts my heart... or is it Tennessee. Either way, girls like this, talented and adorable and smart, make my world go round. They gotta stop tarting her up with all this makeup though. Sierra's a natural girl so stop trying to make her fake. Management, stop it. Just knock it off. Less is more.

1:00: “My dad, he would play guitar for my brother and I [sic].” That should be “for my brother and ME”. Would you say “for I?” Of course not. Then you shouldn’t say “for my brother and I”. A compound object is still an object and still requires the object form of the preposition. “For my brother and I” is not only horrendously ungrammatical; it’s ostentatiously oozing affectation.
