Zoom Club, Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman, Hammer and Tongs, The biggest thing since powdered milk. Lots of deep heavy tunes with Budgie. Hard rock bad with some of the best heavy riffs ever. 1970's albums are all good.

I love Budgie, hugely underrated Welsh band from the 70s. I have to say this particular song is one of my favourites of theirs. Much of their music is very heavy and 'Parents' is by no means typical of their work. I really liked their first few albums (with Tony Bourge on lead guitar) and they penned some classics: 'Breadfan' (later covered by Metallica) is one that springs to mind as does 'Baby Please Don't Go' (a cover of the blues staple popularised by Big Joe Williams and Muddy Waters). One definitely to check out is the riff-tastic 'Napoleon Bona Pts 1 & 2'

Baby please don’t go was also popularised by “Them” - the band that featured Van Morrison in the mid 1960s.

Glad you guys liked this. This is from 1973, their 3rd album. It also contains a track called "Breadfan" which gave them a little fame when Metallica covered it on their Garage album. Some people think the "seagulls" spoil it, not me. Well spotted. As I remember, the guitar imitation was Gullchicks calling for their parents. Thought it was so cool back in '73. The only other person I'd heard do this well at this time was a brilliant blues guitarist called Roy Buchanan. The singer/bass was Burke Shelley who sadly died in January. In '73 was Gilmour playing better than this? I think not. This year, .73, was the most exciting year for me. I was already well into Zappa, but it never quenched my thirst for more. In the space of a couple of weeks that year I saw these guys, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Focus, Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher. Also that year, I saw Thursday's offering, Can. Budgie were one of the very first Heavy Metal bands. Well done Dan and Sifa, keep up the great work

So glad you listened to this so underrated great Welsh band. They were classified as heavy rock but the only ones in history to be so diverse in the styles they played. And Burke Shelley (bass and vocals and composition) was able to write wonderful ballads such as this one. Can't think of another heavy rock band achieving this. Try "Zoom Club" and "Napoleon Bona-Part 1 and 2" if you want to hear how they sound when they are heavy. They are epics, classics. And Tony Bourge was an incredibly good guitarist, knowing how to make a solo without boring everybody. Note they were the true heros of Metallica who covered two of their songs but other comments might have said it before

Budgie... so underrated but sooo good! Loved them since early 70's. A great 3 man band from Wales, Great Britain. The guitarist Tony Bourge had maybe some of the greatest riffs.. like Tommy iommi. All their 70's albums are very good.. My fav song is Napoleon Bonaparte part 1 and 2,thou they have lots of awsome songs.

Back in the day, I made several failed attempts to like Budgie's first three LPs because I was intrigued by the cover art and enigmatic (and sometimes just wacky) song titles ("Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman", "Hot as a Docker's Armpit"). Personally, I just couldn't get into their style of plodding metal and helium vocals. The songs I did like (such as "Parents") all broke form. Their version of Big Joe Williams often covered blues classic, "Baby Please Don't Go", is a winner to my ears. I never made an attempt to go beyond those first records. That said, the world would be a dreary place if everyone had the same tastes. It truly baffles me that Budgie never went beyond minor cult status in the US as there are plenty of music fans here that enjoy that style, and Budgie was really good at it.

Nice to see you reacting to a bit of Budgie, very underrated band. This isn't that typical of them, a lot of their stuff is dirty haevy rock music. I hope someone suggests "Breadfan" or my particular favourite "Zoom Club'. Great choice!! 👍🏼

I never thought anyone would react to this fabulous track! What an amazing group, they could be mellow, and then rock with the best. Napoleon Bona-Parts One And Two was my first introduction to them, a mellow start, and then the thundering chugging of part two. An amazing and highly underrated group.

Glad you mentioned the jazz quality in this music few detect it fewer articulate it. This band were in the first wave of Heavy Rock in the late 60s early 70s yet they were capable of sublety and sensitivity too. One day there will be a statue to them in Cardiff.

Budgie have some of my all time favourite songs this being one of them. ............one of my favourite song lines is in this track 'mind the cars cos you've got school on monday' - love it. Their stuff was fairly eclectic, too eclectic for some, and I include myself in that. When they were great they were truly great, some of the best riffs in music, but other times I think WTF. Some of their song titles were legendary in themselves.
@drcarp73772 жыл бұрын
How budgie never went stratospheric god only knows. They are a welsh band. And so many more tracks to listen too. They were Years ahead of their time. But they did influence many future bands. Metallica, have mentioned Budgie as one of their influences.

Great that you're getting a dose of Budgie! This isn't exactly what I think of when I think of them. They've got some real heavy songs unlike this but this'll do for now. Well worth further exploration! They never cracked the US market and to me that's a real head scratcher.
