This has been one of the best articulations of the benefits of having this lens. I had our time putting my finger on why it looks so different. But the medium format feel and the depth of field even when doing a full body portrait is exactly what I was trying to say. Great video!

The reason to keep the tripod mount is that you can anchor you camera strap from that instead of from the camera so that your mount does not suffer having to hold the hanging lens weight when you are not holding the camera. Long term is not a good idea to let the mount handle that weight. Also the blurry backdround from the 105mm is way above what the 135mm or any other lens can do aside from the 200mm F2 or the newer RF 85mm 1.2. But sure if you are not doing full body shots then the blur amound differences will be less dramatic

105 1.4 is exactly the same as 135 1.8. Just do the math. 105 / 1.4 = 75. 135 / 1.8 = 75. Same bokeh characteristics for distance to blur.

got 135 1.8. Not that heavy, but still pretty big and heavy. Also own canon 85 1.8, and most people just don't really see much of a difference between 85 and 135. Canon's 85 is cheap, light and works very very well on 20mpix canon R6 sensor. But I got in love with sigma's sharpness. Another "issue" with 135 is that IBIS is not stabilizing it as good as with 85.

I’ve actually just put this 105 on eBay to let it go to a new owner, but I’m keeping my sigma 135mm F1.8 because I just tend to grab it more often- not because I have a preference for the look or the focal length, but because it’s smaller and lighter. I shoot cars on a race track out in the desert from time to time and I’ve got a 10 stop filter for the 135 so I can get motion blur on a clear 109 degree day, but such a filter for the 105mm would be a billion dollars if it even exists. As I mentioned in this video, if the 105 comes along with me it just changes the whole day as far as packing and planning. I think ultimately the size and weight of this lens really does park it in the “if you’re a pro it’s worth it, if you’re not a pro then it’s not” camp, right along with canon’s F1.2 primes and the 28-70 F2. I recently compared this lens side by side with the tiny $199 (used) canon EF 100mm F2 and for my purposes it nailed the coffin shut for this lens. I want to need it, but I just don’t 😭

+1 for the excellent unique informative review 8:55 must be my favourite part. Was so tempted to buy this but this video saved us all. Saw two dozen reviews but yours is the best! PS. my dear fellow, as an engineer I should warn that adding a frontfilter thinking we are complerely safe is like thinking ariabgs are going to save us from injury at speed of 80+ miles an hour. The weight of this lens in particular (1.7 Kg) when crashing into a solid cement brick floor at free fall speed from 1m50 height, will render the internal lens alignment completely off. In other words its better to remove the filter and be afraid holding this lens strongly, than to loosen up feeling relaxed thinking a drop will be saved by a thin front filter ring on especially such a heavy lens. My 2 cents.

I was just pondering about whether I should go with 85 1.4 (I am an Nikon user, as far I know there is no 85 1.2 for Nikon sadly) and 105 1.4 and it appears you've managed to put some weight on a 105 scale :-) Thank you for a nice review (I shoot cars actually, and most of my colleagues swear by the 85, so what you said about that was really informative). Thanks for this review - a different look to what I've seen on this lens. You spoke about 'magical' and I think another name is 'intangibles' - those things we see but are sometimes hard to put into words. I've heard others call it '3D Pop' and I truly believe there are certain, rare lenses that create 'magic' and are much sought after. I've lusted over this lens since it came out and I still want it but the price is the only thing holding me back. I have little sympathy for anyone who buys it and then immediately complains about its size and weight - those are facts just about every review points out at the front of the video. One of the older Zeiss Distagon 35mm lenses is well regarded for the 'magic' that it creates but those lenses now cost in the $3k+ price range (if you can find them). This lens, the Sigma 105/1.4 ART costs much less but the tradeoff is the size and weight. If you want it you'll learn to live with those tradeoffs. Thanks again for a fine video.

Thanks for the feedback! I actually sold this lens (after I thought I never would) early last year because I was trying to streamline my setup and go full RF, but after canon officially blocked third party RF lenses I was deeply bummed and I bailed on the system, sold all my RF lenses and started getting EF again (as well as a 5D classic just for fun). I bought this lens again, used, with a VERY lucky eBay bid for under a thousand bucks. THIS one I’m never selling😂 I can’t state anything about this lens for Sony, but I think with the canon scene teetering between EF and RF, lenses like this one might fall more quickly into an excellent price point as time passes. Hopefully anyways.

I found a sewage ruber joint that grabs perfectly into the grouve near the front lens, making for a rubber absorber/protection AND about 4cm sunshield - because indeed the full original sunshield is to awkward to me for carry around (but use it for 'real' sessions). Also; the collar : either without, or with a 'cuby'-like, light, arca-swiss adapter/spacer about 4x4x4cm that sits good in the palm of the and and I can thud also finly manual focus when needed, nice to ballence ce camera.

Once again, it all boils down to buying a lens for your specific needs. The 105 enters the telephoto compression range that the 85 doesn't. It's hands down better. I do find it amazing though that people still bitch about the size and weight of the lens when every review says the same thing so I'm not sure why there's surprise. What you get out the lens from an image perspective outweighs the size and weight "downside"
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair 9 ай бұрын
I think, at least for me, it comes down to how particular you need to be about the end result. Like the difference between 85 and 105 (or 105 and 135) can be massive if you’re putting them in just the right scenario but they can be negligible in many scenarios. Same thing goes for the image quality, I recently tested this lens next to an ancient used $199 Canon EF 100mm F2 USM lens and while the sigma had nicer bokeh, was way sharper, had less vignetting, and completely killed the Canon as far as color fringing goes (a big weakness for that particular series of canon lenses) the results of the tests made me sell the sigma 😂 for what I do nobody is going to see the difference between those lenses, but I’ll feel the difference any time I’m packing/carrying the kit, and if either lens was lost/broken/stolen I’d certainly prefer it be the little cheapo. It’s kind of like, I use an $800 scissor at work but 99% of my work is scissor cuts so the same scissor would be a rip off for a barber doing one scissor cut a week who would be perfectly happy with a $99 scissor, and if I were using a $99 scissor I’d see and feel the difference all day. If I ever make the move to shoot photos for a living and not just a hobby I’ll buy this lens again in a heartbeat. This lens and my RF 70-200 were both part of an expensive lesson for me in learning what I need versus what I think I need.

Andrew, thank you. Im stuck between Sony 135 1.8 and this, and I can’t really decide. Spec wise it’s a no brainer, GM wins, sharpness about the same but GM wins, but there’s something I can’t fully explain about this lens that’s making me want to return the GM. Idk but we’ll see. Any advice after owning this lens for so long is welcomed!
@andrewdoeshair

I’ve got the sigma 135 F1.8, not sure how it stacks up against the Sony, but I can say that between that lens and this one I find the field of view at 105 wayyyy nicer to work with than 135. At 105 I get just enough background to add some context but at 135 I have no background. This is of course limited by where I shoot (my salon is actually pretty huge for a salon, but still very difficult if not impossible for me to shoot a person “in a place” with my 135). I do end up grabbing the 135 more than the 105 simply because of the size and weight, also the large element on the 105 is really intimidating for the people I’m shooting (haircut clients, not actual models, although some clients are actual models and I’ve even gotten comments from them about how the 105 stares right into their soul 😂).

This is the best "honest review" I've ever seen for this lens ! I own it since two and a half years and it's the lens keeping me into the Sony alpha camera system ! For sure, it's heavy and I also leave it at home sometimes because I don't want to arrange my bag specially to carry this beast around... But when I'm going for a portrait photo shoot, there are two lenses I always take with me... The Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art and my Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art which unfortunately isn't available in Canon EF or RF mount, otherwise you would also fall in love with it ;-) I really believe that when you shoot a full body portrait horizontally with a 42, 45 or 61mp camera, then you decide to re frame the image in vertical portrait mode, you immediately see the magic of this amazing piece of glass ! The final portrait version is as good as if it was taken originally with that framing but with a 24 or 30mp sensor !

That second paragraph is super key. You basically just said in a few words what took me a while video to try to say 😂 the scenario you just painted, a lens like this one paired with a high res sensor means you can grab one full body shot and get a perfectly usable head shot at the same time. I think if I were shooting portraits professionally I’d do exactly that

Autstanding video. (Though I dont agree with the view that the collar is best to be removed when not on tripod, ..but that is because I added an 3.5x3.5x3.5 adapter sceleton-cube (very lightweight, by RRS) allowing the arca base to be clampable every 90 instead of only every 180 degrees. This soft rounded addon makes the lens rest nicely in the palm of my hand at a perfect distance. The collarnob I clamp only minimally so as to rotate easily the camera at any angles. And the (a shading) is good to have ..or least ready - with that lens.) All the analyzing and sharing of the other considerations are rare and to the point, I totally relate to each. Even You feeling that You'll probably keep it for ever (including the exeptions) - jet perhaps (I guess You could perhaps feel the same as me that) if Sigma made a 75mm f/1.2 then I'd probably swap it for it.

I never got to try this side by side with any 85 F1.2 but I can say (and should have said in the video) that the EF 85mm F1.2L ii suffered from color fringing and softness about as badly as the 85mm F1.8 that I used in this video. I used to own a Rokinon 85mm F1.2 that had pretty much zero color fringing, but it was a manual focus lens so I ultimately let it go to get the Canon EF 85mm F1.2L ii... Compared to the Sigma 85mm Art, this lens has less color fringing and is sharper, but most importantly (to me) the out of focus areas look better-- I sold the 85 Art because the out of focus areas were very contrasty and busy, often times it would seem to "double up" lines as they fell out of focus (so like, for a head shot in a black shirt on a white backdrop there would be a ghost just following the outside of the shoulders). My Sigma 50mm Art did the same thing with the out of focus lines, it sort of doubled them, making busy areas look even busier as they fell out of focus. The RF 85mm was remarkably sharp, I did do a side by side with that and the Sigma 85 and the RF was both sharper and had smoother bokeh. So pretty much, the only faultless 85mm I've tried was a the RF, but ultimately it wasn't as fun to use as this lens, it lacked something I can't put my finger on. I'm sure if I tried it side by side with this lens I could figure it out, but this feels like every dollar is better spent than the RF 85 felt, if that makes sense.
