I think they can improve them, but in more recent lenses Sigma actually put in HSM motors with higher torque, which had started to help. A firmware update can't add more torque, unfortunately, so there may be limits to what pure firmware can do.

Great review Dustin, as always. I am still happy with my 24-35mmm f/2 Art after watching your review, getting 3 focal lengths in one that can rival many primes; so I have learned to deal with the Sigma weight factor. I agree with you 85mm is more versatile focal length, but that 105mm seems more dynamic and exciting. As soon as you said that this 105mm has weather sealing, you got my attention. About time Sigma! Guess they are watching your channel too..heh heh.

Wonderful conclusion to another great review. My copy will be arriving tomorrow, but I was thrilled to hear you say that the end result feels much like a 200 f2.0 lens. That was my feeling from seeing your images. I owned the Nikon version 200 f2.0 many years ago and it was my favorite portrait lens of all time. I look forward to getting that feeling back, though with a much happier wallet. Thanks for putting out the best reviews I have ever seen. Your integrity communicates very clearly through this medium.

The model was my German Shepherd, Atlas. Looking through my Lightroom library, the Nikon missed the eye 6 out of 10 attempts as he casually waited for a treat. Aiming for the pupil in his eye at about 10 feet away, the Nikon lens would get the eyelash, or the corner of his eye. So this is both front and back focus hunting respectively. The Sigma was nearly 100% - so much so I would blame user error for the couple missed shots. These were tested on different days but under similar outside lighting. Just an amazing difference between the two and I am a BIG Nikkor believer. Bravo Sigma.

SVA1 wanting this lens for my d810 and soon to get d850. From what I’ve seen from other reviewers it is out focusing the Nikon 105 f/1.4 on the Nikon bodies. I still think I like the Nikon lens pics slightly better . But to the Ziess Milvis the micro contrast on that lens is so beautiful. And I’m a bokeh whore. Love the Sigma bokeh. Usually I don’t like the Sigma bokeh except on my Sigma 180mm f2 /2.8 os hsm dg ex macro lens.

Good review. I thought the focus, as well as the bokeh looked fantastic in the photos you provided. The Art series has always had good glass but I have been somewhat disappointed with auto focus at times. So, I didn't really get too excited about this review until you specifically covered that issue at length. In fact, I really perked up when you explained how Sigma Art autofocus has steadily improved, especially in the 105mm F1.4, reviewed here. Good fast glass has always come with a couple of premiums, primarily price and weight. Heavy lenses have never bothered me as long as I am getting premium photos because of all that glass. After watching your commentary on the 105mm, it looks like I may have to just bite the bullet and pick one up, soon. Thx for the thorough review and I do hope you are right about Canon, possibly having shared their algorithms with Sigma. That would make us all happy.

@20:40 As usual, great insight. Please keep up this practical, down to earth approach to your reviews. Your insight is a breath of fresh air in a world full of noise and misleading "opinions". I wholeheartedly agree. Sigma lenses have always had gorgeous image quality and character, even if not perfect (those imperfections actually give it that character). I can often tell if an image was taken with a Sigma. But their kit has always had a major flaw that would make using it frustrating to say the least. I'm really glad they finally figured it out. I personally have no business with fast 100mm+ primes, but if a sigma lens of this caliber has great focusing as you say (and I have no doubt in your words, since they're tried and true), then I'll be eagerly anticipating a refresh of their other, shorter, primes. Thank you again Justin. Great review.

Hi, I’m a Nikon user, it is true the focusing in the latest Sigma lenses have improved considerably. I have the Nikon 200 F2 when compared to the Sigma 105 f1.4 some times is not easy to tell them apart. But under closer scrutiny the Nikon 200 f2 had the edge, a truly legendary lens! I agree with your statement Dustin that newest sigma lenses have AF comparable to canons. I was very surprised when I tested sigma 14-24 2.8 which I own. I used to have sigma 35 1.4 art and that was a nightmare AF experience. The sigma 85 1.4 was very missy in lower light and slow so this is why I choose canon 85 1.4

Hi Dustin. As always I so love your reviews and really appreciate how detailed they are. Thanks to your epic reviews I just picked up the Sigma 105 1.4 art, Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 and Zeiss Milvus 25mm 1.4 (I had to have that zeiss pop for my landscapes!). I spent some time testing out the Nikon 105 1.4e, Sigma 135 1.8 art and the Sigma 105 1.4 art at the same time and I was really just blown away by the sigma 105 art every time on my Nikon D810. Just jaw dropping results every time. I was also very impressed by the 105 1.4 art auto focus speed, consistency and the background blur. The 135 1.8 was amazing as well but it felt too confiding to take indoor pictures. The nikon 105 1.4e didn't impress me as much to want to spend an additional almost $1000 . I did notice that the sigma 105 art may have slight better light transmission although that could've just been on my part with the environment light changing. You know what else I liked about it? How it felt in the hands. It's not a long lens so it does NOT feel as heavy as so many people make you believe it is. It just feels great to hold and fits right at home on the D810. Thanks so much for your awesome reviews and please keep it up. The hype about this lens was real and you just HAVE to shoot with to really see it for yourself :) B&H had a $100 discount that ended yesterday so I had to get it!

The sharpness at f1.4 is disarming, it left me speechless, together with the ability to completely isolate the subject from the background. The full body and upper body shots in the woods are some of my favorite you've shown over the years . Reminds me of the samyang 135mm f2 photos you did , same sort of rendering . My question or request is to see a real world comparison between this lens and its 135mm Art brother using that sort of photos to compare rendering . Not so fussed about sharpness as just about everything is sharp these days. The 135mm Art is more then a third cheaper then the 105mm Art and much lighter .

How would you compare the bokeh quality and color saturation of the Sigma 105 vs Canon 85 1.2 and even the Canon 135 L? I don't have to use a joystick or dial to choose my focus point because I just put the box on what I need focused in the frame and half press the shutter to lock on and move the camera to recompose and it works flawlessly even with fast moving objects on the old Nikkor 85 F1.4 Af-d. I think they can improve them, but in more recent lenses Sigma actually put in HSM motors with higher torque, which had started to help. A firmware update can't add more torque, unfortunately, so there may be limits to what pure firmware can do.

I've had a look to the Show Focus Points website. But not only that latest camera models like D850 aren't listed, what makes me even more hesitating to even just try this software is this section from the FAQ: "If you have used the "focus and recompose" technique in any given image, the plugin will show correctly which focus points were activated, but their content (the part of the image they show) will not be identical with the part that was seen by the photographer when focusing, since the camera was moved after focusing. Technically, this is the only possibility, because the camera does not store any information about the recomposition movement of the camera." So for what is it useful then, in a real world photograph?... Do you intend to make a review on the Sigma competitor from Nikon, the Nikkor 1.4E? That would interest me plenty! I don't have limitless money. I have to plan lens purchases just like everyone else. I've already tested the 135mm Batis lens if you look at my channel. I do plan to look at the Voigtländer 110mm in the future.

@@DustinAbbottTWI oops, sorry, if I heard correctly it was your first FE mount review...and now, imho, you are one of the most respected FE reviewers.

It was my first FE review. I'm obviously pretty happy that adding Sony to my channel has gone well.

in min 21:40 you say '200mm f/2'? Did you intended 135mm f/2? Cause I think the only 200 f/2 is a relatively rare Nikkor. Can you also include a brief section in your lens reviews about how they handle direct sunlight, flaring in backlight situations, etc. It is important for outside work and especially so for portrait lenses. Tnx for the wonderful reviews as always.

No, I meant 200mm F2. There is such a lens for every major camera company, and it is, in some ways, a similar lens in terms of design...though in a far more dramatic (and expensive) package.

@@DustinAbbottTWI tnx didn't know Canon made one. I knew of its f/2.8 but not of its f/2 200mm. I even discovered that there is a discontinued in 2004 f/1.8.

That's correct. They actually reduced the maximum aperture when they added IS

It should work fine. Most lenses will slow down a little in poor lighting, though newer bodies are getting better and better at this. This lens sucks in a lot of light.

A 135mm f1.8 isn’t actually more blurred than a 105mm f1.4, just feels that way due to the added compression.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Not true. Depth of field is smaller and thus the out of focus area is more blurred. Any attempt to explain that away is semantics that doesn't translate into reality.
