With so little between them, I think people might choose one over the other based on what lenses they already have, or what their needs are outside of macro photography. The 90mm might be preferable in a small headshot studio, while the 105mm might be picked for outdoor portraits.

actually I had a 90mm, I have sold it and ordered the sigma 105mm. Main reason was that 90mm is optimised to get round bokeh balls at f5.6, and using it for portrait at f2.8 the bokeh balls were not round. Sigma is round at 2.8, and I also preferred the 105mm for portrait. I really hope the sigma is going to be easy to focus manually as the 90mm that was amazing.

I need to know how it compares at F/8. Maybe the Sony surpasses it? Did you do any sharpness comparisons at higher apertures? btw- keep up the great work on your videos.

they also often use macro tilt-shift lenses .... and focus stacking but very often it is juts a digital models of jewellery, especially rings. This way they can have sharpness exactly how they want it
@Jaibytes4 жыл бұрын
@@PavSZ Yes, many times they use 3D digital design as you say but they also do macro photography sessions, the lack of videos to do this type of photostacking is impressive, the information is practically nil, how much I would like you to do it this October 26 that sigma for sale and I'm waiting for it in amazon spain or BH, greetings!

Tough decision for me. I'm more of a video guy, so I think the 90 may be the way to go due to the OSS.

at macro magnifications the OSS makes no difference what so ever

Just to let you know that the Sigma 105 Macro is not compatible with the Sony A7iv. The manual function flickers and makes it impossible to use the manual focus components of the Sony camera. Spend the extra $300 and buy the Sony lens.
@PavSZ Жыл бұрын
it sounds like there was something wrong with your lens. I have it here and it works just right (and the same as 90mm) on Sony a7IV

I think the Laowa 100mm 2.8 macro lens may be better than both of these. For “macro” but for video I’m sure these 2 lenses trumps them.

OSS is a big deal. Not all Sony cameras have IBIS and for those cameras, especially at the tele end, lens stabilization is worth gold.

lens stabilisation or a tripod 😉
@PatrickWithCamera2 жыл бұрын
Why samples are iso 1000? Thats why you didn't see difference in sharpness, at iso 100 sigma would be sharper lens. Also need to mention that sigma got worse AF and focus ring got long delay while sony focus ring is faster, AF speed I could forgive, but focus ring with such delay is something that was driving me crazy and sold sigma. I would go for sony 90mm all the way even if its softer.
@PavSZ2 жыл бұрын
what gave you the idea that all my samples were shot at ISO 1000?? There were all shot at different settings, depending on the situation. Many of them at ISO 100

Very nice review, thanks a lot. At this moment the Sony lens is reduced with 300 euro, and the price is close as 30 euro to the SIgma one. I will order the Sony, since they are at the same price, but it has stabilization and that clutch for manual focus seems very nice to use.

Any reason you kept the Sony over the Sigma? I’m looking for a macro lens but also want to do portraits. Based on the reviews and comparisons, the Sony with OSS is a better buy with better resell value. Any thoughts?

Such a hard decision to make. Do I want to have another heavy Sigma lens without OS, but better image quality that's cheaper than the Sony. Or do I want a lighter lens with OSS, slightly worse image quality, better focus ring, but costs a lot more...

Globally Sigma lenses are about 10-15% cheaper than the Sony ones. However, that doesn't seem to be true in India (past experience). So, I feel Sigma price is going to be very similar to Sony 90mm in India or may be even higher than Sony once lauched (Sony 90mm is priced at £580 here). If both are priced equally which one will you prefer for macro and portraits? p.s. - My camera (A6400) doesn't have stabilization.
