*For those people asking about autofocus problems, here's the ultimative answer.* Any lens wider than f/3.5 can experience inconsistent autofocus performance, including my Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM. You see, the problem comes from the dedicated autofocus sensor that's located at the bottom of your camera. This sensor is not always perfectly aligned with your main (image-capturing) sensor, so your photos can end up slightly out of focus. The solution is to calibrate the lens using Sigma's USB dock accessory, or - if this doesn't completely help - just use live view. Live view doesn't use the aforementioned autofocus sensor, but the main sensor to acquire focus instead. This is why mirrorless cameras have slower, but almost always accurate autofocus. Print this comment a stick it to your wall for future reference :)

I have this lens and use it on my Sony A6500. The actual F stop is 27-52.5. With the electronic clear photo zoom on the Sony A6500, it becomes a 54-105. I love this lens. It is everything everyone says about it.

I hear ya - it is confusing but even on a crop sensor lens the focal length printed on the lens corresponds to full frame/film. So you do multiple by the crop factor to get the actual or effective focal length.

I agree with your reasoning. Listing the landscapes and portraits first makes me think you are leaning and should lean toward purchasing the Sigma. It is a fantastic lens and will give you a whole different perspective on photography, especially lower light and wide aperture.

In the past I agree that Sigma has had some issues with quality control but these newer lenses, especially the ART series really seem consistently excellent. I had the Tamron 24-70, briefly, and it back focused something terrible.
@photorectoby

At 35 on a crop sensor you are actually around 56mm which is perfectly acceptable for most portraits. I do wish it went just a little higher in focal length but that feels greedy. So in short yes but just barely.

Even though I have full frame cameras I still take my 7DII with me, as a second camera, when doing landscape photography. Even my Canon 18-35 f2.8 II doesn’t handle filters as nicely as this lens. It’s also a tough lens too and I know from experience that lens hoods do project the lens.

All deoends on how soon you want to move to full frame. The resell value of this lens is likely to be excellent so if you care for the lens you could think of it as very cheap renting of an excellent lens. If you plan to move to full frame very soon - well you might want to consider other options.

Not sure it works exactly like that but generally yes the f/1.8 is sweet and gives you great shallow depth field.

It is as sharp as the new 24-70 and offers that lovely f/1.8. Only thing for live music - you don't have much reach/zoom with this lens and need to be close. Otherwise a resounding YES!

That would be a good start - Pay careful attention to photos of people - if you find yourself shooting at 40-70 often, which is where people usually look best - not distorted - then you should consider the 24-70 f/2.8. Another option is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, no IS but a sharp lens and solid value.

My subject is just casual friends and family having fun. Basically i want something to capture moments like a nice candlelight dinner for example without additional light. The issue is since I am having the flexibility of upto 135 i use it. Maybe i should use it more restrictive in the 18-35 range and see if that works for me.

Yes I know that's why i hesitate :) In fact I photography landscapes as well as indoor portrait. That's why I thought about buying the Sigma. And sometimes I like making photos of animals away from me (natural parks, zoo...). I think the sigma would give me more opportunities as it gives me a real different lens from what I already have, whereas the 70-300L just give me a better image quality (I think).

I just bought this lens for my d500 and had wanted something specifically for it and it is sharp corner to corner and just a good match up for the camera. I bought mine used for 550.00. I have plenty of full frame glass, because I have two other full frame cameras, this lenses range is limited, but it is a special piece of glass and I'm happy that I waited long enough to find it used at a decent price and yes new it's still 799.00. I have not had front or back focus issues, which is copy dependent.

I'm looking to do a major up grade, get rid of these crappy kit lenses I've been working with for over a year now. I plan on going with prime lenses for the large focal lengths, 100mm and up. And go with a couple of small zooms. This being one of them. For sure, I've heard nothing but good things with this lens.

Not a dummy. Many lenses physically won't mount on a teleconverter because of the design of the teleconverter and flange distance etc. I will ask around, see if I can find someone that can try- I suspect none of the 3rd party ones will work but maybe Nikons own version. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

The reason i love about this lens is it is a wide angle lens so that I can use it on my travelling, just a little concern over the 35mm. As you said in your video, some people are concern with this limitation. Do you think with this lens, 35mm is suitable for portrait photography?

I need a camera system for wedding photography. I wanted the D7100 (have an old Sigma 28-70 2.8 (Nikon Mount) and SB-26) but am going with the 70D after seeing less than stellar D7100 focusing/buffering as compared to the 70D. One issue is finding an equivalent to the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 (7oz) for Canon - would hate having all this extra weight. Maybe the zoom makes up for the weight. What do you think of this for wedding photography?

Awesome review. This lens is on my top list for a new Nikon D7200 and plan on using this setup on a photo booth business. Do you think 18-35mm is ok? The camera (sits on a tripod) will shoot probably 3 meters away from the subject (guest).

Thanks for the review, Toby! How does this compare to the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens? About same price... Would you pick this 18-35 over the 17-55?

Toby, most of my photos are indoor. This lens seems amazing. But I have doubts concerning it not having Optical Stabilization. The aperture F1;8 is enough to shoot at least 1/30s indoor so my hand shake does not compromise the image quality? I am more incline to but the Sigma 17-50 F2.8 (with OS). If did the price (18-35 F1.8 is much more expensive the 17-50 F2.8) did not matter, does the sharpness and aperture F1.8 compensates does not having OS for shooting handheld indoors photos?

+Felipe Amaral I don't own those lenses, but I can say from experience with indoor photography that I prefer image stabilization to wider apertures. It really depends on whether you want everything in focus. I usually do, so the f/1.8 part does not entice at all - though sharpness is always essential. I just wish Nikon or Sigma would make a corner-to-corner ultra sharp lens of the same focal length and aperture range as the typical 18-55 kit. For my uses, the ONLY thing wrong with the kit lens is its inconsistent sharpness. You should be able to make a lens with almost perfect sharpness in that range for a good price if you limit the aperture range to 3.6-5.6 max, right?

The Canon 17-55 f2.8 with IS comes to mind... or even the Sigma 17-50 f.28 with their version of IS (like Felipe mentions), fit the bill pretty well. The Canon especially is sharp... and the Sigma, for the money, is damn good too. All 3 of these lenses I mentioned are good candidates.

Hi Toby, thanks for this video. Since you didn't mention in your cons, maybe the lack of IS is not a big deal here. What do you think? Too short focal lenght to have problems in not having IS? Thanks

I shoot events, landscapes, and cityscapes. I currently own the Nikon 35mm 1.8. Should I buy the Tokina 11-20 and keep the 35mm 1.8 or sell the 35mm 1.8 and just get the 18-35mm 1.8?
