Sigma 30mm 1.4 (Quick Review) - Yes, It's Worth The Hype!

I've been using the 30mm Sigma for a couple of years as my go-to lens and have been extremely happy with it. I've also been amazed with the 56mm, not only for portraits, but also for street photography.

Beautiful lens. I got mine for my M6. My only cons is the slow of AF sometimes but it is manageable. Very worth it with it’s low aperture size.

Hey Andrew, great video to understand the differences. What kind of lens should I use on the Sony ZV-E10 II for portrait shots? Use case: Vertical shots of me talking into a camera at my home desk, with heavy bokeh (extremely important)-for Instagram reels. Another detail-there is not a lot of space in the room. The desk is backed up to a wall. The distance to the wall is under 3 feet. Because there is a wall, and the camera is on a tripod slightly away from the wall, along with my face and torso with some headroom for any graphics over the head, I want the hands on the desk to be slightly visible. I like the bokeh in your video (I believe that's the 16 mm you're shooting with?) But for my use case its seems too zoomed in (I'm looking at it from a vertical video, Instagram reels POV, for KZbin it seems fine). Which lens (30mm or 16mm) would help me get at least your level of bokeh if not more for the use case mentioned above?

Hey! For any talking head shots I'd go with the Sigma 16mm because it's nice and wide and sitting a few feet away from the camera it makes the background nice and blurry at f1.4.

Yes! If you use a gimbal it won't matter if your lens has image stabilization or not. A gimbal will always get you a smooth shot!

I have an M50 Mark ii, and I'm using canon 50mm 1.8 lens, I also have a kit 15-45 lens and a kit 55-250mm lens. But after using prime lens (50mm) I can barely use the kit lenses, that's why I needed a 2nd prime lens, and I'm confused of which focal length should I go for? 23mm (viltrox 1.4) ? Or 30mm/33mm (sigma 1.4/viltrox 1.4)

The only one I've used is the 30mm 1.4 and it's a great lens! Any prime with a low apature is going to be a great option!

I am using canon M50 with 50mm lens (using the adapter) and I literally could not see a real difference between 50mm and 30mm sigma (except having to go backwrard as a manual zoom out) What do you think? Please correct me if I'm wrong

You probably won't notice a big difference side by side, but are definitely different lens characteristics!

Depends on what you want to do with the lens exactly. The Sigma 16mm is very wide and good for vlogging, KZbin videos, and landscape photography. The Sigma 30mm is better for portraits, product photography, video b-roll, and street photography. I recommend both!

Hi! I just got mine today (brand new). When I tried it out, it made some noise when: 1. used on autofocus, 2. pointed upward, and 3. rotating the MF ring (faint sound). Please let me know if this is normal?

I’m not sure if I should take this one, I’ve read in the comments that it’s similar to the 50mm and I always use that one (mostly at 1.8 since I want the bokeh effect), but I’m looking for another one that allows me to obtain that effect in full figure portraits and to not have to go far from the person. I’ve thought about the 35mm at 1.8 at least but it’s quite expensive though /: which one would you recommend?

The Sigma 30mm is great for portraits! Anything with a good apature from 24mm to 50mm is good to use on APS-C cameras for portraits!

If you have the money go for the 18-50mm that may be a better option because of the flexibility. It's like getting a 18mm, 30mm, and a 50mm all in one lens. I have never use that lens because it's not an m-mount, so I can't speak from experience. But if it's like the other sigma lenses than go for it!

as a beginner I would lean towards prime lenses like this. 30mm on a crop sensor leads to a good all-purpose lens- some landscape, portraits, and mostly natural and street shots. I don't think the peak photo quality of the 18-50 mm is as good as any of the prime sigma lenses individually, and the 30 mm is the most versatile of the sigma trio. also, this is a bargain relatively speaking, if you get it for $250-270.

Very similar in focal length. I would say you don't really need the sigma 30mm if you already have the Canon 50mm, but the sigma 30mm is a very sharp M-mount lens at f1.4. It's a great lens!

Try unmounting and mounting it well again. probably the "teeth" are not aligned well. here that click sound when mounting the lens. just maybe .

It's a great all around lens due to it being a f1.4 so it's good in low light and it's also a 30mm which is a very comfortable focal range for most types of photography or video!

great video, however, I do love how people, not just you, show sample images that have been edited. How does an edited photo in any way show the qualities of any lens on the market? Bog standard jpegs taken with a lens would show so much more in a truer sense.
