SIGMA ART 18-35 vs CANON RF 15-35 - CANON C70

I still find amazing how well the Sigma lens holds against the (extremely over priced) RF lens in terms of image quality and sharpness. Also although noisier I didn't find its AF unusable at all, moreover that in a real scenario a shotgun mic wouldn't be closely pointing at the lens motors in a silent environment. Last thought, I would say that the choice is not even about the budget and I would give to the cheaper, older 3rd party lens an advantage in manual focusing and versatility in real world run and gun scenarios, since the Canon lens tops at 2.8 (thus gathering less than half of the light) having also a noticeable less shallow dof compared to the 18-35.

Another thing I've noticed is that on the clip at minute 8:36 the shadows in the Canon lens looks rather lifted having also warmer and more contrasty (and brighter, despite the waveform) look compared to the 18-35, giving the feeling of a different (internal?) image processing that however I didn't notice as much in the previous samples of the trees.

Both lovely lenses. i own the sigma and love it, especially considering the price. The 15-35 is a bit pricey for me so i opted for the Tamron 15-30. It produces an awesome image and has stailization as well.

This video just comes perfect in time!! I just got the c70 coming from The GH5 and owning the sigma 18-35… I wasn’t sure if the sigma is any good for the c70 regarding especially autofocus. I appreciate you man!! Keep on doing these videos :)

Both great lenses and the sigma is a good value for money. Only thing I found with my sigma is that it’s do struggle sometimes with autofocus what I did not see with the RF. Still, right now i stick with the sigma and might get addition the rf rokinon 14mm for a wider field of view

Thanks for this great comparison, I started off with the Sigma and just moved to the Canon. Certainly not an easy decision as both are very nice. The main thing for me was like you said the handling of the 15-35mm on the C70, when using for any extended period of time is much more comfortable to hold. I got the C70 pretty late in it's life cycle and at the time didn't have the budget for RF L lenses so the Sigma was the only choice at that time. It's why I love the C70 and it's versatility, there are so many ways to get great images out of it.

Rf15-35 is my main to too lens for my c70 for most cases, I do have a boosted tamron 35 1.4 for low light situations and it is lovely.

Long story, I almost bought an old canon 16-35 2.8 for really cheap. I had a few days to play around with it and fell I love with the focal range. In the end, all of the dated features on it kept me from buying it. Then I went down the rabbit hole of trying to decide between the sigma and the RF 15-35. I’ve watched this video like 5 times and it made me pull the trigger on the RF 15-35. I just kept feeling like I was going to be disappointed with all of the compromise I’d be making by going with the sigma. It’s a great lens, but you’ve really sold me on the 15-35. Buy once cry once right? 😆 I have a feeling this lens is going to live on my c70.

Focal lengths (correction) relative to R5 : *Sigma DCI/UHD: 24.7-48.1* *Canon DCI/UHD: 20.6-48.1* DCI sensor width C70: 26.2mm, R5: 36mm; crop factor: 1.374x Both C70 and R5 crops in from DCI to get UHD, so technically when comparing R5 and C70, *C70’s UHD crop factor is also 1.374x* because R5 also crops in a bit. But if you are comparing C70 UHD to A7s3 (35.7mm width): new crop factor 1.4534x *Sigma UHD: 26.2-50.9* *Canon UHD: 21.8-50.9* This is only when compared to A7s3/FX3/FX6.

@@Josh_Sattin I just edited my values. Canon publishes the crops as 1.43 and 1.53 but those are technically wrong, but also right. They are the diagonals. My numbers are from C70 spec sheet, R5 spec sheet and Sony camera spec sheets. I calculated these crops using only *width* not diagonal since FF 36x24 and DCI/UHD have different aspect ratios which should be taken into account. Gerald Undone did a video on this a long time ago. He also suggested using widths, not diagonal.

Now that the crop sensor Sigma 18-50 f2.8 is out for the RF mount, it seems like the ideal lens between these two if it's on the C70 - native RF mount, same f2.8 as the Canon, cheaper at $599, much longer at the long end (basically a 24-70), smaller than either of these setups. is there anything wrong with that setup? I've read that maybe the Sigma RF lenses won't cover the S35 sensor, but can't seem to confirm this anywhere, but it seems like the older Sigma EF Crop lenses worked ok. Thoughts?

You forgot to mention that unlike the Sigma, the Canon lens is weathersealed. This in all likelihood is the principal reason for the price difference between the two lenses.

The sigma in the R5C can give us an completely incredible range: 18 to 56 mm at 1.4 - 1.8 (Switching in between using and not using the speed booster, in S35) That, with the 8K sensor give us fully 4K. And is just one filter, just one lens, and it cost 500$.

I saw a review where you couls use the sigma in R5 to shoot 4k oversampled from 5.1k in canons crop mode and the images were great. So if you have a R5, the sigma still works on its 18MP cropped sensor.

You do not _really_ get what you pay for. RF lenses tend to focus breathe extremely. I would not want that on a lens 3x the price.

Thanks. You wouldn’t want to use the 18-35 with the focal reducer because it an APSC lens. You need to use a Full Frame EF lens with the focal reducer.

This was good, especially on the barrel distortion. I did notice a weird shift when you did the image comparison. I didn't realize it was barrel distortion. Something to correct in post, like in Davinci?

I am confused as you mentioned canon Rf lense when on the Canon c70 gives a minimum focal length of 23 in uhd at the wide end but when shooting to test autofocus and barrel distortion you have footage shot at 18mm. How did you achieve this?

I was referring to the full frame equivalence. The camera will show the actual focal length of the lens on the screen.

What adapter do you use for the Sigma. I just go the camera with a new Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF and the included Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x and it has major vignetting.

You shouldn't use the 0.71X adapter with the Sigma 18-35 or 50-100 since those lenses are designed for S35, not full frame. They don't have image circles that are large enough. I use this adapter: geni.us/tH8GTn

I just bought the R7 body only, I also got a canon RF 100mm macro lens for product photography. But what's a good lens to get for everyday use for family pics, city pics and travel? I had gotten the canon RF 35mm macro lens for everyday use but I'm not the biggest fan of this lens.

I stopped using my sigma. The Rf is just overall better but i wish it was 1.8. Then with the speed boosted 24-70 i dont have much reason to use the sigma.. you should compare those two next.
