I've had my SDM-18 for four years and I play it regularly. It wants to be played hard, that's what it was designed for and that's where it shines. Best acoustic in its price range if you're into that traditional sound and you like to strum/pick hard.

What is the best website to determine how old a Sigma / Martin acoustic guitar is? How can the year a Sigma was made be determined by its serial number? Found a tossed out Sigma acoustic guitar. Think it was made in 1974, manufactured in Japan. Thank you

11:25 Can't you/Pete make a video on these 'nuances' (nuages?), demonstrating it with indeed a 300, a 500, a 700 and a 2000 quid guitar?

My 1st guitar was a Sigma 000 and it spoiled me. I've still got it after 35+ years of playing. As much as my ego wants me to get the Martin, I can't justify the cost when compared to how little I actually play it. A real Martin sounds absolutely amazing, but I'm an electric guy. If you're looking for the Martin sound (there is such a thing) and your wallet doesn't allow for it, the Sigmas are a fantastic option.

I love my old sigma (mid 90s vintage), but the action on it is crazy high. I've played a number of other guitars where the action is down out of the stratosphere, and while they are easier to play, I actually perfer the tone of "my" sigma. I suspect that the only reason I prefer it though is that it was my first guitar. Captain and Pete (and others), have you played some of the "old" Sigmas? What did you think of them and are they worth the cost of a proper setup/pleking?

close Cap`n, but, by 1980 Yamaha were well established acoustic builders & that Xmas song video by Greg Lake is a Zemaitis, also heard at the start of Mandolin Wind with Ronnie Wood, a 12 string & it sounds, well, don`t take my word for it--

Im a Martin guy that also loves and appreciates every Sigma that i have ever come across. You dont really hear the openness and harmonics of a solid wood guitar, live over street level noise. Singmas have a nice balanced tone. They are more rugged than a Martin, and feel just like a Martin. Slap a passive KnK mini in these and they are gigable.

Do you guys have Recording Kings in the U.K.? They are an amazing value....I don't own one but have played them in the store......the 000-18 is everything my 2016 000-18 is....I would buy that instead at this point.....the binding is coming loose on my expensive Martin and it really hasn't opened up like it should by now.....one reason I just play my Gibson.....

Couldn't have said it better Pete with the notion of more dynamic range in the notes on higher end Martins. I've been playing a DX1 and 000X1 for a few years, both of which are excellent for the money. But recently I was offered a crazy deal on a Martin MMV (a Guitar Center exclusive that shares many characteristics of the D-28). I bought it thinking I'd probably just resell it but I fell in love with how much extra there is in each note and strum. It's almost like 1080p vs 4k video, 1080 is perfectly fine but 4k gives you a little something extra to improve the experience.

About 20 years ago I knew an older guitarist who owned a small shop. He was showing me a D-28 he had just traded for. It played great. I looked it over and told him it was a Sigma, not a Martin. He was shocked. He looked it over more closely than he had when he made the trade. He had just played it and noticed the gold label at the headstock that looked a lot like it says Martin. But he didn't look at it closely. At that time they really, really looked like a Martin.

Poly vs nitro is the worst argument to make when saying more expensive guitars sound better..i own Martins and Sigmas…Martins are no better than the solid wood Sigmas that AMI are making.You don’t even know what inlay material are used on the fret board.Not plastic btw
@vegetableswife Жыл бұрын
100% agree with you, I’ve got 3 all solid Sigma’s plus several guitars that cost a lot, lot more (£4000-£7000 range) and these Sigma’s are really fantastic. I’ve compared them directly with Martin’s standard series guitars (15,18,28 and 45) and they compete very well indeed. They do require a good setup and better bridge pins but once you get them dialled in…wow.
