You're nailing these reviews Pav, great explanations that some other's gloss over, as in the aperture ring lock switch which needs to be locked on "A" in order to have full camera functionality when mounted on the Leica SL3. If unlocked and choosing to set aperture using the lens ring, (which old school guys like me love) you lose P & S Exposure Mode options in the SL3 menu leaving you with A & M. That said, not really a compromise, and the images from the SL3/Sigma 50f1.2 are absolutely gorgeous.
@PavSZ6 ай бұрын
I think this might be the case with all of the cameras. You can't have shutter priority mode for the camera to choose correct aperture when the aperture is in manual mode. I'd love to try it on Leica

Looking forward to you comparing this to the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 50/1.4, as one is likely to be purchased in the near future, and your opinion counts more than most - especially for L Mount.

Thank you. I have reviewed Lumix S Pro 50mm awhile ago. I'm not a fan of it. It is very clinical, way too big, way too heavy and way too expensive. This Sigma (and f1.4 DG DN) are way better lenses overall in my opinion.

Wondering Pav if you could do a lens comparison between this new lens, the f1.4 and the original 1.4 ART lens from 2014.

Why? One is 1.2 and the other 1.4

it't not something that I planning to do. Very small difference between this and the new f1.4 and the old HSM version is a totally different lens meant for different cameras.

Please compare this lens to the Sigma 50/2.0 DG DN at F2.0 Are all portrait shots in this video at F1.2?
@PavSZ8 ай бұрын
it would not be a fair comparison. This lens is in a different league. Yes, all the portraits were shots at f1.2
@dirk.47118 ай бұрын
@@PavSZ But people will think: if I only need F2.0, will it be in the same image quality level like the F1 2 at F2.0? Normally F1.2 lenses ar not that superior once you stop down compared to "easier to design" lenses.
@YannickKhong8 ай бұрын
@@dirk.4711 " F1.2 lenses ar not that superior once you stop down compared to "easier to design" lenses" is a dSLR/M-mount vintage lens mindset. Most new lenses improve stopped down.
@dirk.47118 ай бұрын
@@YannickKhong of course they improve. But they start normally at a different level, because it is a lot more diffucult to design a good F1.2 lens so that it is already very good at F1.2 than a good F2.0 lens at F2.0

Good video. Good audio. Really nice photography. I think this lens is for me. And I don't mean just because of the 1.2. I passed on the 50 mm 1.4 update because it seemed to be just. Average. If I get one of these it won't be because it's 1.2. It will be because it's much better than 1.4 in other ways.

Why is it said 50mm is the same FOV as the naked eye when it obviously isn’t? Isn’t it more like the compression and perspective is the same?
@PavSZ8 ай бұрын
it kind of is the same but without the peripheral vision and it does create a look without traits of 35mm when the picture might get slightly distorted or compression of 85mm when the background seems unnaturally close to your subject

@PavSZ6 ай бұрын
It is a way better lens overall but I'd personally wouldn't shoot the product photography wide open. f1.2 is very shallow DOF, not always suitable for this kind of photography. Lumix 50mm f1.8 is more than capable of delivering amazing product photos

Hey Pav i have lumix s5ii and sigma 16-28mm and 105mm macro for up close food photography (within 50cm) , im looking for another lens, what would be your perfect food lens ??
@PavSZ8 ай бұрын
I do love 50mm but strangely for food photography I prefer 24-70 or 24-105s at f4. The zoom compression and smaller apertures give me that sweet spot when it comes to food photography. Totally doable with 50 but in this case not at f1.2 or even f2. Food photography needs less shallow depth of field in my opinion. Your 105mm will do OK, same issue though, try not to shoot wide open

I really dont know for what i should use this lense. I am a portrait/boidoir foto and video shooter and as i want more than one eye in focus everything is shot at around f4-f8 i would never shoot at 1.2 as no customer would buy pictures where most of the face and even the nose are out of focus. Too much bokee looks really ugly to me
@PavSZ8 ай бұрын
it's certainly not a lens for you if you shoot everything at f4-8. Most, even cheap lenses perform better with smaller apertures anyway. What do you use?
@andersistbesser8 ай бұрын
@@PavSZ i shoot with 24-70 2.8 which is very sharp at 5.6 . Kit lenses are not good as they dont have a constant aputure for filming. Image quality is worse also. All guys i know who do what i do shoot around f4-8 its pretty standard for studio work.

Such a dumb that they make "petal" lens hood. On normal hood you can stand camera on a table, like a cup etc, with this "petal" it so doesn't make sense, especiaaly for non wide lense. Probably the purpose of it is minimizing vignetting, but for 50mm it could be minimal but make more "user experience" everyday discomfort.
