Turtle Hunting

Turtle hunting out near one of our camps in freezing cold water! It was in the mid 30's that day and a somewhat cold day to go turtle hunting. But we got us a good eater! Sigma 3 Survival Dinner!

That is my crawford survival staff! It is an aluminum walking stick that has a blowgun, fish gig, spear, medical vials to hold fire kit and a bunch of other stuff. It is an awesome tool to have and is pretty much an entire survival kit in a walking stick. Any kind of stick would have worked and it was used to prod the turtle out of his hiding spot.

Box turtles are not turtles but tortoises. I have heard of people getting sick off of them but never dying. Water turtles like sliders, snappers, softshell, etc are all safe and good to eat.

LOL ever seen a snapping turtle hunt? I have caught several on plastic worms and even one on a flyrod fishing for bass. Sliders generally are less likely to go after healthy live fish but still will take them.

We are overrun by these things in area and they kill off the fish population pretty quickly. He was a nuisance!

They are not endangered in my pond or the lake at the hunting club. Well that is not quite true the ones in my pond and perhaps the others are in danger of being a few meals if food prices keep rising.
