Now that we know some things about immune cell structure and function, we need to start understanding how these cells interact on the molecular level, and how signals are translated into cellular response. This means looking at receptor-ligand interactions. What is signal transduction?What are kinases? What are GTPases? What are G-proteins? We need to know about these important cellular components if we are going to understand the immune system, so let's take a closer look!

As a 9th Grade Science teacher, I absolutely love this channel. There is so much that I steal for my classes. I feel we have all been cheated that he has had to dedicate so much of his time to debunk so much pseudoscience, instead of making educational content about real science because Dave is the best Science communicator on the web. I’m a big fan. Your hard work is much appreciated Professor Dave. Thank you.

Great content. After dropping out of college years ago, I decided to reenter school January of this year. My first semester back involved studying diligently and wrapping everything with your videos. It's fair to say that I was the top student in my anatomy & physiology, chemistry, and Microbiology courses. You're good at simplifying all the technical stuff. You should get a 'teacher of the Year' award. 😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Super cool, Professor Dave! You bring out the best informed nerdiness in all of us! Looking forward to the continuation of this series. Being a civil engineer, rather than a microbiologist, I've always wanted to understand the actual mechanisms of cell function. I can break down a rocket propulsion system, a squirrel-cage induction motor, or an internal combustion engine - each complicated in their own way - but I'm going to need your help to break down how a cell works. Should be a fun trip!

G protein coupled receptor > binds to ligand > summons G protein heterotrimer with GDP attached > GDP converts to GTP > G protein heterotrimer becomes activated > activates multiple pathways in cell(causing changes) GTPase converts GTP back into GDP, deactivating the G protein heterotrimer(on-off switch) Edit: Is the G protein heterotrimer the same as the large GTPases? 🤔

T cell receptors without attached kinases > ligands attach to T cell receptors & coreceptors(friends) > receptors & coreceptors cluster within cell membrane > intracellular tails form docking sites for kinases Kinase Enzyme > Phosphorylation > Amino Acid > Changes in protein Do the docking sites perform the same role as the conformational change in the receptors with attached kinases? 🤔

Small monomeric GTPases anchored to inner side of cell membrane, remains inactive when bound to GDP Ex: Ras/Rac/Rho 🤔 Are the small GTPases normally bound to GDP? Ligand > Receptor > adaptor proteins localize to cytoplasmic(intracellular?) tails > recruits G-N exchange factors(GEF) > swaps bound GDP to GTP > activates small GTPase > launches cell signaling cascade(activates multiple pathways in cells?)
@WanderTheNomad

Cell response to ligands depends on 1) ligand concentration 2) receptor expression levels(density/concentration/prevalence/frequency?) 3) combination of activated receptors 4) order of receptor activation

Professor Dave, in this world of increasing ignorance and conspiracy, there dosent seem the point for me to pursue science(and mathematics) anymore, because more and more people will just say it is all lies, then what's the point of studying mathematics and science when at some point people are going to lose complete trust on it? They reject mathematics as the descriptor of reality, reject the scientific method, which renders their position as unfalsible, do you think this ignorance will increase or decrease in the future?

The culprit mainly responsible for the cult of prideful ignorance is social media echo chambers of misinformation. If only social media companies would be more strict on misinformation, the problem of ignorance can be tamed because hoaxes and conspiracy theories spread like wildfire on social media if left untreated. Don't let the minority of idiots ruin your potential to do great things. There are plenty of very smart people on this planet and karma will weed out the few prideful idiots.
