Felt bad for Adler. He just wanted to keep his entire crew from being overrun with whatever the fuck was happening. And seeing Falke, what seems to be a love interest for him, coming back warped and defiled from whatever she saw out their fucked him up. The most painful part is that he was vividly aware of the cycles. He writes it out in his journal and mentioned at how alone he felt because he couldn't tell anyone. He was worried about being seen as insane and being decommissioned. Worse yet, he can't travel beyond the gate to try and figure out what to do, because I guess the "memories" of beyond the gate don't apply to his person. So it's this untouchable mystery. He'll never know what happened to his precious Falke. He thought trying to keep the cycles from being broken was the best solution. But it only perpetuated the madness. He was aware, and alone. He wore no mask, and he hated everything.

The story is utterly tragic from any point of view. I randomly bumped into this game and it's so unusual and surprising to see such a quality product that was written and directed in such way that you just want to unveil the mystery and know more until the end. Falke was utterly unfortunate to receive a signal from dying and tortured by radiation Ariane and that just caused madness to Falke first and everyone else around her, but Adler.

Adler was designed to see Falke as a goddess the moment he left the assembly line. It's not just a sick lover, it's seeing his god warped, defiled and ultimately killed. And his goddess was actually dreaming about somebody else all this time. He used to not be aware of the cycle though, he figured that out by himself with a little bit of luck (whatever inside the safe sems to be safe from the reset).

Like the King in Yellow, the Mask. "I wear no mask." Adler never knew and never will know the truth about the gate and what happened to his commander Falke. He may seem cruel at first, but he's witnessed the cycles too many times and see everything crumble around him without really knowing why. He is a tragic character who just wanted to do things right, and prevent things from getting worse as they already are.

they also did such a good job of subverting the trope of his character. I don't believe any of the characters can be classified as evil, not even Falke

this was probably the scene that sold adler as a character, and foil for elster, for me. I've been entranced by how signalis parallels the two of them. they even mirror each other's shots of kissing their people of devotion farewell. insanely interesting dynamic. I wonder about his role, if his memories of elster weren't purely the cycles. I'd wish we knew more about his situation, and everything else at sierpinski, but what we have is just enough to play with.

I played this video without knowing anything about this game, bought the game because of the music, and came back to listen to this song again after the ending. It was a very interesting and valuable experience.

What was it like knowing this scene was coming up and slowly acquiring context needed to understand it, giving you the chance to peace things together sooner than most.

@@destruction42k I only knew the music and the screenshots first. As I played the game, I understood the background of the scenes scattered throughout these OST videos, and it was like weaving through a fragmented memory that I had almost forgotten. But it may not be much different from the experience that anyone can have in this game of following Ariane's memories (I am not an English speaker, so there may be some grammatical errors).

I had a similar situation ware YT was spamming me hard with Signalis reviews and explained videos without me even looking it up. As I have a soft spot for Eldritch horror. I saw that the game was to do with the king in yellow and cycles going in. So I like you was waiting for the moments the dots connected. I think knowing just a little going in to it rather than being completely blind. glad to see we both had similar experiences.

SPOILERS FALKE's Gestalt was Ariane. When FALKE went back through the gate for whatever reason, she found Ariane there and realized the truth. You can see the "red eye" in the secret ending.

@@kurisumakise2098 Whether Ariane is Falke's gestalt or not, Ariane is in full control of Falke during the only event that you encounter her when awakened. Ariane is possessing Falke to attack you for not fulfilling your promise. There's a dead giveaway in how Falke's face shot when she wakes up is identical to Ariane's face shot when she wakes up.

Funny, I saw it as a torii gate (given the inclusion of Japanese text in the game). Torii gates are a symbol of stepping into another world, though it's usually associated with the spirit world. So in a sense, one could see the red gate as a literal (i.e. Elster's trail of bodies) or metaphorical place of death (Ariane's/Falke's fate with the red eye)

I think it's the gate between the land of the dead and the living. The Isle of the Dead painting in this game is sometimes shown with a red gate in the middle of it. Elster being called from the land of the dead by Ariane. So kinda a reverse guillotine? Good catch anyway.
