I used to do a couple of covers of Pink Floyd and they are one of my favorite bands. One "pro tip" if you want to sound like Gilmour. Listen to when he isn't playing. There are a lot of rests in his playing - he doesn't necessarily string all notes together constantly which I think is partially a blues influence. The other tip is "percussiveness". He'll rake into a bend for example. Like a couple of muted strings into a full step bend. Add that to what is in this video and you'll sound a lot like Gilmour.
@stevejames68602 жыл бұрын
I often tell my students that great guitar playing is often about what you don't play as much as what you do play and David Gilmour imo is the best at that!
@goldenultra2 жыл бұрын
Another brick in the wall part 2 solo has the rake with bend. Hard to get that tone on my metal hsh Floyd Rose, my acoustic gets closer to that tone. Probably need another guitar leaning towards a tele, though obviously I have to hide it from the wife or I will get a different tone that I do not want to hear.

@@stevejames6860 I think this is true with Philosophy too obviously an aphorism is saying something, but the emptiness of meaning is balancing the meaning. Blues is constant playing, but it is about feeling, but I think Gilmour riffs are more like philosophical aphorisms.

@Lewis Cassel I am literally the biggest Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan ever, I've heard David say in an interview that effects and pedals are an extension of their instruments and music. I don't want you to think that I'm disrespecting him, it's quite the opposite. It is just the way he plays, using effects to express emotions.
@Valveus5 жыл бұрын
@@saby8765 It can be a bit of both sometimes. As a guitar player, when I'm trying out different efects, sometimes I'll start playing a riff off the cuff as the sound of the effect will inspire me to do so. but then I'll switch to another effect, play the same riff and it doesn't sound as good, in fact sometimes it sound awful! But yes, I know what you mean, no amount of effects or fancy kit will make you sound good if you can't play to begin with. Sometimes I'll play the guitar clean or even play an acoustic, it really helps to tighten up your playing, somtimes effects, especially distortion, can hide a multitude of bad habits and sloppy technique

EXACTLY! I think the 3 guitarist people try to emulate the most are Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour and of course Eddie Van Halen, if anyone of them were playing their guitar with their complete rig and then handed you their guitar you're going to sound exactly like Yourself. The same thing holds true for them, you hand them your guitar with your setup and they are not going to sound like you. No matter how hard any of us try there's only one Jimi one David Gilmour and one Eddie.

Gilmour was definitely about tone also. In 1985, he was introduced to active EMGs. He had multiple pedals including the Big Muff, delay, reverb, etc. You're crazy to think it wasn't about tone. The genre Syd Barrett created was all about trying new sounds. Gilmour picked up where Barrett left off.

When you do the E minor arpeggio with bending to reach another note I've noticed that David sometimes does these double to triple bends that sound very Ghostly but very Floyidy. I'm not sure if you know what I'm talking about but David always freaking does it in his solos and I always love it lol. You sort of did it in that part but I know on his solos he does an extra bend sometimes where he plays the original note then bends it but the third time he bends the note he digs a bit deeper as he eases the bend to the sound of the original note. I'm not sure if I'm making sense but it's one of those very niche nuanced things that are a bit hard to describe lol.

I'm sure others here would appreciate it too. I think Most Petrucci solos have something good to take for you guitar playing in general because it is very often conceived with a technical approach of hitting the right notes of the right chord in the right rhythm, if that makes sense. But anyways, thanks a bunch already!

Excellent! My biggest problem with trying to play lead is that I can't string-bend to save my life - I'm lucky if I can bend a note up a semitone. I have a Fender Telecaster so I can't blame the guitar.
@SignalsMusicStudio6 жыл бұрын
If you're not playing 9 gauge strings, try switching to them and setting up your guitar with them. They're substantially easier to bend. Bends in the middle of the guitar (near the 12th fret) are easier, so try working up your strength there on the 2nd and 3rd strings. Also try using your fingers together as a block, and have them all push together as a unit to get the string to bend. It's tough stuff, no doubt, but over time it starts becoming natural.
@mikenash70496 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice - that's great! I'll try this.

Who doesn't love the Comfortably Numb solo? My sister, cuz she thinks Pink Floyd sucks. One day, she will see the truth.

Or maybe he should let his sister have her own damn opinion

Rafael Silva I would if she doesn't allow me to play my songs and instead plays a bunch of pop music just to sicken me.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Not suggesting your sister is a horse...

Great job sir. I saw him in 2016 on his 5 city North American Tour (The Forum in Inglewood) and he was AMAZING.

So many guitar teachers. ... Too slow, too complex, too boring... You have got it bang on mate. Just the right speed, amount of content and high reward for the required input. Love it mate . xxx

Gilmour's guitar solos are always beautiful and impressive. This is why there are many Pink Floyd's guitar solo covers on youtube.

May be nit picking but when you play the slide up to notes, you are ending with vibrato. When not sliding up you don't use any vibrato which of course make a lot of difference. Just saying

You're very right, to be honest I didn't even realize I was doing that! I should have mentioned the power of vibrato to making a single note sound more floydian.

Great video. These are some of the best guitar videos on the youtubes. I also think you might be Obama's secret son

Liked this very much, especially the words, "Becoming David Gilmour is a lifelong process". 🙂
