Thank you for your video! My girlfriend and I made our hoods following your video. We have received many compliments! We also recieve many stares as we wear them on a daily basis. They work really well and keep us cozy in Minnesota in the Northern part of the USA. Thank you again!

Thank you for the video. I live alone in the wilds of Ireland. Fed up with paying for crappy things that don't last I'm embarking on making Viking style clothing and footwear for myself. Things that will be well made, from natural materials, that are repairable and compostable at the end of their use.

My husband cuts the grass wearing his Viborg linen shirt. He says he’s much cooler in hot weather. I wear my Viking garb a lot out in public. So far no one has accused me of being Amish. 😀

@@WilliamWilson_org that’s great! I wore linen clothes a few times in the 90’s and it just wasn’t the same. I felt ugly and it was very wrinkled and not lovely like my Viking dresses which I feel pretty in. Sometimes older is better.

I made one last october for our local renaissance faire out of an old military wool blanket! All hand stitched and no beeswax but it did come a downpoor the day of the fair and it held up quite nicely from the rain lol Although wool is one of those fabrics that still retains warmth when soaking wet
@SigneofHorses4 жыл бұрын
Indeed! Wool is the best! The original is made out of a single layer of wool so yours is closer to a true replica.
@timdeboer88043 жыл бұрын
@@SigneofHorses I would like to make one of these out of wool but I want to line it with the linen material. Would you/could you post a video on how to please? I don't know how I stumbled onto your page but WOW!!! I love it. It's just so down to earth and relaxing. Thank you.
@SigneofHorses3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tim.. Making a linnen lined wool hood is as simple as watching the video twice ;) You just make two hoods one of wool and one of linnen. Turn the linen one inside out so the seams show on the outside. If you put that on your head and then put the wool one on over it, all you that is left is stitch them together. Note though: this hood has only been found made out of a single layer of wool, there is no archeological proof that lined hood excisted.

I made one recently because we can get very heavy showers sometimes and it seems to be the shoulders that get really wet and stay wet. I waterproofed mine with boiled linseed oil and wax with a little turps (Oil skin)
@SigneofHorses3 ай бұрын
Oh.. it’ll probably be more flexibel that way?! And did it keep you dry?👍🏻
@crafty10984 ай бұрын
Fun fact: the Viking's use of the metric system is why they were unable to get to the moon.
@MegaDavyk3 ай бұрын
The American supposedly went to the moon 50 years ago and then forgot how to do it, if you can believe that.
@gateway88333 жыл бұрын
Bees wax is the best natural waterproofing material IMHO, you can also use 50/50 blend, Boiled Lensed Oil/Mineral Spirits. Soak the hood in the mix and hang it outside and let it drip dry. You can’t use straight Lensed Oil because it will never dry. Sometimes this will mold in high humidity if you leave it rolled up put away. Another option is Tung Oil. Use it the same way as the Lensed Oil, however, it won’t mold. Use 75/25% prepared (like Minnwax) Tung Oil to Mineral Spirits.

I’m going about making my pattern. You measure 72 cm on the folded fabric, so do you actually end up with 144? Thinking through the process, that doubled number makes more sense to me, but I just want to check.
@SigneofHorses3 жыл бұрын
Let see if I get what you explain. The width of the fabric will differ per fabric so it is good to measure yours if you want to be sure. Linen and wool will shrink when washed. Take that in account as well. When you keep the fold of the fabric at your centre back or front you can suffice with half your measurement. For instance measured around your waste you come to 80 cm. Your front and back pieces will have to be 40 cm wide at that point. As left and right are the same and we lay the fabric double half of that measurement makes up the patternpiece measured at the waist. Hope this helps and is not confusing.
@mariaborellohst9864 Жыл бұрын
I reely dont understand how you can get your head messurment around your face to be 60 cm but in the drawing you wrote 40 cm … ??
@SigneofHorses Жыл бұрын
Hi there.. it is indeed unclear in the video. This might help. It’s been a while since o made this video. What I think I did was add an extra 20 cm to the hole measurement so it wouldn’t be too snug. That makes 80. Divided by 2 makes 40cm. It’s divided because the pattern piece is half the hood. Let me know if that helps.
@WilliamDavis-lf5bq12 күн бұрын
Metric didn't exist in viking times. But neither did British imperial or American imperial. Not sure they had a standardized measurement system. So metric works

Not linen - wool.
@SigneofHorses11 ай бұрын
For a historically correct hood you can also make it out of wool. Just follow the same instructions and probably best not to wax it 😂 Wool has the natural ability to repel water. It will get wet after a while in the rain though. @susanp.collins7834
