I love that smell of creosote. I come from a rail road family lived by the tracks and being a phone man had the creosol on the polls!

Looks like Iron Senergy spent a bunch of money on track work over the 2 week vacation! Again I love that that they are so invested into keeping your operation going there and doing the maintenance, upgrades, etc. Even sprung for knocking the muck off of my favorite locomotives! Hope you had a most excellent vacation, Dave! I can count on 1 hand the number of legitimate 2 week vacations i've had. I've got almost 6 weeks worth of PTO built up. I just don't have anywhere to go or more importantly, anybody to go with anymore. sigh.

The manganese insert casting for the frog at 15:24 & 15:50 is broken at the rail joints off the heel of the frog. The wedge-shaped tang on the heel end of the frog should be a part of the casting. Those 3 long frog bolts go through everything to hold it all together.
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
Very observant Roy and you are right. And in one of the next few videos coming out on why we tamp track you will find out why it broke. I've been asking and pleading to get that turn out cribbed out to get rid of the mud and it didn't get done. When they put the new timbers in they put half mud ballast back. sigh..... I remember as a kid when a new utility pole would go up and we all would smell the creosote
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
Yes and when they used cedar wood for the poles only the butt ends would get creosoted. My dad was a lineman for the power company and he climbed a lot of those line poles that were creosoted the whole way up Craig. They always carried creosote burn kits in their trucks. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@HolidayDecoratorАй бұрын
Seems all wood utility poles are now being replaced by concrete poles. Every time they replace a wood pole in my area now, it gets a concrete pole in its place now. Sure miss the smell of creosote when they'd replace an old wood pole with a new one. That creosote smell is rapidly disappearing now. Even a lot of railroads are starting to replace wooden ties(sleepers) with concrete ties(sleepers) now. So even the smell of creosote at the railroad tracks is starting to disappear. Just not as fast as the wooden poles that are street side.
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
@HolidayDecorator they use no concrete here, its all salt treated poles, they are a puke green color

Nothing nicer than a clean and shiny loco. I was watching a video about Milwaukee road and back in the day they had a kind of drive thru train wash.
@poowg2657Ай бұрын
Yeah, back in the 70s they were clean out of Milwaukee and dirty going in. The cleaning rack was down by the 35th Street viaduct.
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
I did not know that Scott, but I have seen videos of the PRR and their drive thru loco wash. When they used to run passenger trains they wanted to put forth a great public image so people would ride their trains, thus washing the locos. The coal in our cars doesn't seem to car whether the locos are clean or not tho.... LOL Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
@HolidayDecoratorАй бұрын
Yep, we have a drive through train wash in Sanford, Florida. I don't know how often it gets used, but seemed to be very rarely. When CSX owned the tracks they occasionally ran their locomotives through it, I think Amtrak's Auto Train utilizes it, as well as the regular Amtrak Passenger Trains. And I would guess that SunRail Passenger service uses it. I only caught a CSX Local utilizing it once, washed the entire train, was cool to watch, but because of where it's located, it's difficult to get a good video of a train using it. Commercial Buildings, houses and trees obscure the view.

You must remember that when you work with KREOSOT, you must follow various rules in advance. Creosote: Creosote also contains benzene, phenols and cresols. It is carcinogenic and phototoxic, which means that in case of skin contact it can cause the skin to lose its ability to resist sunlight. Some of the substances in creosote are difficult to break down and can accumulate in the food chain. I have worked with creosote. I know what I'm talking about. Have a nice day

Coal will be making a massive comeback soon!!! Everything comes full circle!!!
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
The coal market goes in cycles, we are currently in a depressed coal market. AAR tracks 20 different commodities for all Class 1 railroads. This past week coal was down 23% from same week as last year. That is huge. Almost every week this year coal rail traffic has been down. With the projected demand for electricity fueled by the massive increase in AI, energy demands will sky rocket and let's hope coal plays a big part in providing a good hare of that energy production. We in the coal industry are encouraged by the new selection of US leaders, we shall see what the future brings. @ccrx6700Ай бұрын
Your right about that Clarence. They spent a lot of money this past year getting the mechanical parts running and working well, that's far more important than the paint. But I figure that at some point here in the future it will get painted. Iron Senergy seems to be a company that wants to be proud of how their facilities and equipment looks. But also remember we are in a depressed coal market all over and there is only so much money to spend for the time being and we are not like a class 1 RR who has billion dollar budgets. Very enjoyable, Dave. I did some track & signal work for the museum for which I volunteered, so I appreciate your thorough work. I didn't see any guard rails on Bridge 9. Isn't it common practice to have guard rails on bridges?

Glad you enjoyed Kenneth. Great to hear you volunteered! Some of our bridges have the guard rails some don't. All did when the track was built but various track bosses decided they didn't want to spend the extra money to replace them when a bridge deck got replaced..... sigh. I would have put them back. What is the purpose of that ? Thanks again , Dave. James.

Dave - the bridge you showed needs the angle iron across the top for safety reasons to provide a handhold. The wire won't do it. OSHA treats that as a handrail.

Your right, they have ordered angle iron to put on the Nolan, but as of yet it hasn't got put on. But also OSHA has no jurisdiction here FYI. Since we are a coal mine, Mine Safety Health Administration polices us. Thank you so much for watching the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

I love your videos. I know your railroad is not connected to any other railroad. Would it be feasible to get an undercutter and screener to clean the ballast?
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
How nice of you to say that BiigCheeze and glad you are enjoying. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend. We have had under cutters in here in the past, that requires a good bit of down track time, plus a section crew behind to fix ties, plus a lot of ballast hauling and tamping. Undercuting is the best hing to do, but also very expensive. Last time was $40,000 just for the under cutter for 5 days. Cleaning the old ballast is not an option, throw it over the hill, it's far cheaper to buy new ballast at 18 a ton. This new pressure treated lumber we get for home projects is not very good as it was in the past with Creosote. We have ground contact and above ground contact pressure treated lumber. Your right about the treated lumber Clarence, but there's not much else one can buy. sigh..... Expansion is controlled by anchoring the rail on welded rail. Hi Dave, Many thanks for your time to allow us to come out and join you on track. Question, you said that power generation using coal is down to 16 ish % in 2023 compared to 54% in1990, what are the generators using instead these days, over here in the UK we've pretty well shut down all our coal generators and are using wood pellets (from the US as its environmentally friendly?) Gas and wind, topped off with solar, nuclear and hydro. Thanks again, Take care, Rgds, Peter.

Why do you need the ballast off the top of the ties?
@ccrx6700Ай бұрын
Good question Wilco Automotive. When I do track inspections then I need to see the spikes and the bolts in the joint bars, along with the tops of the ties. If ballast piles up I can't see those. Also when tamping track I need to see the tops of the ties so I know how far to advance the tamper so I don't hit the ties. Plus it looks a lot neater track when the ballast is broomed out. Another consideration is when walking track, it's much harder to walk on all that ballast than it is to walk on cleaned off ties. Long comment today..... 2 weeks of vacation? That sounds like the 1800..... Locos being dirty or bleached look like ready for the wheelchair, sad. Keep them in order! Have a good day? I had that, flying the drone recording the village by night. As the anticollision doesn't work extra care is needed, and it worked out fine. Dropping coal in Your recently perfected track? Bastards... Joking! Naming the track curves with numbers sounds clever. After 53 years on the veteran railroad I haven't managed to learn the geographical names of them. The price for work.... During my very first real job I learned: Either charge what the work costs or charge for the value it brings! Fresh creosote smell... I agree! Lots of poison, but it's special for every railroader! Time 17:00. Bridge 9... Mismatching joints. Looks like a poor man's track. Sadly "my" railroad only consumes some 25 ton per year so helping Your business is hard... But, good stem engine coal is hard to get here. The environment movement hits coal burning. Can't the coal powered plants get more environmentally effective? Cheers Dave!

Your right Stefan the locos look shabby, but the company did get a really good contract mechanics in here this year and they did a ton of mechanical work to the locos so at least they are running good and air pressures are good, replaced a bunch of air valves.
