The books and animated adaptations weren't unpopular, of course (as said, even Regis knew who Frodo was), but they weren't universally known the way the movies ended up being. Here’s a few: 1) You play a lot of Pokemon Rom hacks in between you playing Pokemon games. 2) You can go back to the old Gameboy Pokemon games and still perform some game breaking glitches without looking up how to do them. 3) When your friend shows you Tetris Attack or Panel de Pon, and you’ve never played the game before, but you play it and you are insanely good at it.

1 and 2 definitely for me. Romhacks are a bit hit-and-miss for me depending on who made them and I can definitely remember how to get Mew before Misty in gen 1 or how to clone pokémon in gen 2. Though I never owned an N64 so I was never introduced to PDP until far later in life.

"You plan out you team before playing the game." I do this for 2 scenarios: 1) I do this when going back to pre-Gen 6 games, because finding the Move Reminder is usually a pain if I forget a move I will want later and, especially in Gens 1-3, I want to know what Pokémon have at some decent non-STAB coverage in their level up moves so I don't have to risk use too many TMs too early. 2) I do this when doing a monotype playthrough to make sure I have enough coverage for my chosen type's weaknesses and so I don't have too much overlap in their secondary types.
