It was during the year 917 that two autonomous war fleets of Norsemen and Danes sailed out from their strongholds across the Irish Sea in England and Scotland and set forth for Ireland. It had been 15 years since they had been expelled from their strongholds in and around Dublin by a coalition of native Irishmen intent on reclaiming their lands, and now after building up their forces once more, they sought to reconquer the rich trading port first established by their ancestors over one hundred years before. The fleets were led by two men; Ragnall ua Ímair on the one side and Sitric Cáech on the other, both ambitious young pagan warriors seeking fame and glory, both members of the famous Uí Ímair dynasty which had ruled in Ireland for generations, and thus both possible descendants of Ivar the Boneless, the son of Lodbrok who had devastated the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons in England two generations before at the head of the Great Heathen Army. The many battles that took place during that fateful year of 917 would shatter the short period of peace which had followed the Viking exodus of 902, and go on to establish again a supremacy of Norse and Dane over native Irish.

Did some looking into the etymology of the name Cáech, its obviously Old Irish but what's very interesting is this word comes from the old Celtic word *kaikos, which in turn came from a Proto-Indo-European word *káykos which means “one-eyed, blind”.. Maybe this was a nickname given to him, influenced by local linguistics because of injury or rather.. maybe due to archetypes from his native Scandinavian religion? I'm not sure but it is really fascinating. Great video btw.

Nice work! Sihtric is often said to have been one eyed! Which in itself was seen as a sign of great wisdom by Scandinavians due to the similarity to Odin the one eyed.

a few wee discrepancies in the legacy of Ui Imair there lol "í Ímair dynasty which had ruled in Ireland for generations". that's just not true they would have a monopoly of resources through trading in the areas of dublin, limerick waterford,wexford, cork. Furthermore in ireland Vikings kept to their strongholds, participating mostly in raids and battles for sheer prowess like the irish, (helping the irish fight each other)though the irish had kept their lands, but irish chieftains and kings often fostered norse sons and vice versa for cultural and political legitimacy and this continued up until 1014, until Brian Boru the scourge of the danes expelled their power hegemony of dublin, limerick etc before dying. With some presence of norseman hanging around until 1040, and some saying there was some norse ports that were friendly to normans in 1100's as the language could be understood. Even the name Uí Imair is gaelic, as the vikings knew they had to abide by the laws of ireland for political and hegemonic legitimacy which they never attained.

You say the Irish threw the Viking Invaders out. I read that these invaders were the aristocracy of Norway who refused to convert to Christianity, and decided to migrate. Some went to Iceland, described by some as a Fishing colony, and some tried their luck in Dublin, where there was at least some night life. They tried to lord it over the locals. Scandinavian and Irish alike. They were resented for their high handed attitudes and had to put to sea again.

The Dublin Norse & their Manx & Hebridean allies were destroyed first at The Battle of Tara in 980 and secondly at Clontarf in 1014. They continued to rule in England and following the Saint Brice's Day Massacre of Danes, they conquered all of England in a vengeful campaign. Do not expect a biased English 'historian' to report on Irish victories. They didn't then and don't now. The Norse/ Danes/Vikings were international slave raiders for their Radhanite slavr trading masters, whose trading empire stretched from Iceland to China and Svalbard to Africa's Gold Coast (Nigeria). They fought them! and yeah they are the last true Britons on the Island along with the Picts/Scots: The word "Wales" in Old English means "land of foreigners",, and the Welsh word for England, "Lloegr", means "the lost lands" ie: when it was taken by Danes/Germans(Angle/Saxon) while "Cymru" in Welsh means "land of friends"

@@connormck310 possibly although the Romans generally left alot of the local tribes proceed as normal once they paid up tribute etc after they militarily dominated an area and the menace of the druids (leaders of resistance movement) was exterminated, but the invading sax,angles etc probably had payback on their minds as there was British auxiliary forces fighting for the Romans in mainland Europe against these tribes and after the Romans pulled out the Brits were weakened and divided and easy prey,and probably the sax etc were looking to get out of where they were due to the spread of Christianity,no doubt with the help of local tribes that wanted to revert back to what they had lost ie the old gods it was bloody and not financially motivated.

Yeah they managed in much the same way as the Irish did against the Vikings, sometimes they fought and sometimes they made a pact to unite against other local rivals with betrayal playing a major part on both sides,it was messy and occasionally they got mauled and plundered and payed tribute and occasionally they kicked ass and plundered Viking strongholds/longports,as for the sax it was a war of mutual destruction although the Welch had assistance from Irish tribes also as marriage bonds and Christianity allied them against a common foe, I'd imagine there were alot of refugees fleeing from all over Britain to Irish eastern coast and the Irish at the time had a few small kingdoms already on western Britain coast so by the time sax got to Wales maybe a more United front faced them!

The Anglo-Saxons had an interesting relationship with the Welsh, they weren't eternal enemies believe it or not; alot of trade went to and from England and Wales and Welsh nobles often took part in the English Witan (parliament) which suggests they must have had some friendly relations. Welsh warbands would often cross the border and raid England and English would do the same, but by and large there wasn't large scale conflict for the most part and the Saxons didn't ever really try to conquer the Welsh, even when they united into England and became much stronger. However, they probably did try during the initial invasions. That period is steeped in a bit of mystery, but what I've read from a few books has shed some light: The Saxons worked as mercenaries for the Romano-Britons, who didn't have much of a martial culture, and they were said to disrespect the Saxons religion quite alot and treated them with a bit of contempt. So long story short... When the Roman legions pulled out of Britain, they didn't bother to pay the Saxons a very hefty sum of gold they were owed for fighting the Picts, so the Saxons and Angles went north and forged an alliance with the Picts and Scots and then invaded from Scotland and massacred the Romano-Britons. What's telling is they made a point of crucifying the Britons and burning them alive to mock their Christian God (revenge for their slights and disrespect against Odin?) And let's just say they weren't happy with how the Romano-Britons treated them, and if they weren't going to pay in gold they were going to pay with their land and their blood. The North Sea floods also devasted their homeland around this time which was an extra motive to invade, and the Justinian plague had wiped out as much as half the population of what is now England; I wouldn't be surprised if they interpreted this as their gods killing the Britons and punishing them, and the gods sending floods to their land was a sign that they should leave their homeland and conquer Britain, so it likely had a religious motive as much as a practical one. But...once they'd largely settled in England, they didn't actually bother the Welsh or the Scots 'that' much and kind of kept to themselves.

Boogieknight the irish were never really interested in conquest and when the irish did attempt conquest it was never as a single nation for example tribes from the kingdom leinster controlled south wales for a time and scotland was colonised by the scotti tribe from the northern kingdom of dalriada.Only in the 11th century could you say that ireland was a single kingdom and shortly after that the normans invaded ending that project.
