we all know elite Olympians dope (in sports where the risk-reward is there) and there's probably a Chinese doping program (though "I've been hearing" doesn't count as evidence), but that doesn't explain their weightlifting dominance. China dominates sports like diving, ping pong and badminton where PED benefits are marginal at best, and dominate those even more than they do weightlifting, in the case of the first two, far, far more than weightlifting, and those two have probably the least benefit from PEDs. Their infrastructure for these sports is probably what matters far more given that everyone is cheating to various degrees.
@nyycbd78973 жыл бұрын
@@22448824 because China cares most about the total number of golds and weightlifting/table tennis/diving/gymnastics allow them to train and select kids from a large talent pool since very young age and you get maximum number of medals per capita. Look at other team sports such as soccer and basketball where you have to invest much more money to coach a whole team for a single medal, you see team China being not as dominant if at all.
@trtnec3 жыл бұрын
@@22448824 Actually, if anything, the Chinese dominance in only small to mid classes is moderate evidence that doping is LESS pervasive as most think - as the super heavies get the most benefit from steroid abuse since they can pack on endless mass with little to no concern for maintaining weight. But then again, China dominates all women's classes including super heavy, so maybe that point is moot. None of this changes the fact that since everyone at the top is on PEDs it means that the PED variable is (mostly) controlled for, and that the most likely reason for their success is a strategy built around focusing on sports with the most medals, as evidenced by their even further dominance in traditionally non-PED-based sports.
@kimborampage3 жыл бұрын
@@trtnec wrong. Everyone is on PEDs but as said in the video, their 3 dopers use gear into and during competition unlike their 2 who have to stop. The PED use is therefore not controlled for.
@trtnec3 жыл бұрын
@@kimborampage again, there's two things - China being "tier 3" is all pure speculation without any hard evidence (hence why I said "I've been hearing" doesn't count as evidence) and these tiers are invented just for the purposes of this video. What we do have is strong evidence of PED use by other nations in weightlifting, and I'll even grant that China is as bad. Let's just assume they are the worst for your argument's sake (which again there's no evidence for other than results) - but then my 2nd point is they dominate three other sports far more than weightlifting, in which PED use has almost no benefit and given risk-reward would make no sense to use. When you take these two points together, it's clear that PED use is not the main driver for their dominance in any given sport.
@kimborampage3 жыл бұрын
@@trtnec well then you’re also speculating that these other sports don’t benefit from PEDs. And just because they do well in these sports means that they don’t juice hard in weightlifting? You’re not making sense.

This is such interesting topic. As a Chinese weightlifting fan i have some fun facts and thoughts. Right before 2008 Beijing Olympic the Chinese government hired a very advanced antidoping test agency and conducted scrutinized tests over all Chinese athletes, because it would simply be disgraceful as the games were in China. It’s safe to say there was no complicity in 2008. But still 3 weightlifting gold medalists were found positive in 2017. And they are all trained under the same coach who were later banned for life. Which made me realize that the Chinese weightlifting team does not operate in a unity. Each coach had their own strategies, resources or a dope supplier. Even when the government explicitly asked them not to dope, the coaches may had their own scheme. the motivation to dope does not necessarily come from the athletes or the government, it may comes from the coach. Since only one contestant can go to the olympics in each weight class, the competition exists among both athletes and coaches.

But anyone who isnt a ccp bot clearly knows the ccp forces chinese athletes to dope from a young age before they even enter the olympics. Even the sports that the chinese athletes choose is heavily tailored to maximize medals. In USA, you compete out of your own free will and passion for the sport, whereas in China you are forced to compete in a certain sport and forced to dope. no one respects even china medals. USA even supported their athletes who dropped out citing mental health reasons, if chinese athletes even thought about this they would "disappear". One gold medal from a poor country is worth more than china's total medal tally. Cheating ur way to the top will never be respected. It isnt a coincidence that china won many gold medals in 2008 olympics where they could control the outcomes. Even though we all know u r trying to control and change the narrative, it will be hard cuz there are censors and distractions unlike the chinese internet.

China sends 8 athletes to Tokyo for weightlifting and they all medal. 7 Golds, 1 Silver... Their success is partially due to drugs (We would like to think they are natural because it is the Olympics) but also the Chinese sport system is different. They pick kids most of the time younger than 10 who are deemed to be genetically gifted or show talent in a specific sport. These kids train 5-7 days a week. When you have a population of over 1 billion people the competition would be immense. So not only do they have a strict training program, the top athletes are no stranger to tough competition. Eh, surprisingly Japan as far as actual law does not outright ban steroids like USA. WADA sports still need to comply with any rules, but the shame isn't from taking steroids, it's from getting caught breaking a rule in the sport and the embarrassment that comes from that. Japan still has an internal antidoping agency and athletes do get popped internally within Japan. Toshiki I'm very conflicted on, as his strength and muscularity is more than his competitors taking more medals. But the fact he got so injured so much would in some ways point to not being enhanced, as using some HGH and peptides to heal that all quicker would be the logical thing to do. Hearing some of his interviews with him not even being able to really move his arm right, or the extreme shin splint pain, etc, maybe points to heavy painkiller use or just extreme pain tolerance, dunno.

Compare that to UK where the 4 women we sent have zero competition because they’re pretty much the only 4 women who are half decent in the country, who get 0 funding and in Zoe Smiths case had to train in her garage alone for a year, and didn’t take up the sport till much later comparatively. Not hating on Our women etc because they’re still damn strong and love the sport, it’s just the talent pool for us like many countries is tiny. China loves the prestige of hoovering up medals and has the money to invest in maximising their chances of winning them in the disciplines they believe they have the best chance of doing so in.

I’m curious to hear what your guys opinion (and anyone else who cares to chime in) about Hidilyn Diaz re. doping. Her win came with numbers that I would consider elite or near elite. However I don’t know how much government or personal support would have been available to her for a comprehensive doping program. I’m not insinuating anything either way, but as one of the stories that really touched my heart in these Olympics thus far, I’m curious if anyone has any opinions regarding her historic win.

I oddly think natty for her. She definitely looks very natty aesthetically and doesn't have a deep voice/etc. One thing to remember for her is she was 30 years old, which I think for natties 30-35 is about your peak. She also only managed to put 10kg on her total since 2015 in Houston. For the 30-35 year old thing, a lot of the 1950s-1970s lifters hit peak numbers in their early 30s, it was only Bulgaria with their pharmacology that made 18 year old wonderkids the norm in this sport. So as the sport gets more natty (maybe?) I think we'll start seeing more medalists in their 30s again just because strength gained naturally is a slow process over a lot of years and you can't really beat time in.

@@GilBatesLovesyou not all PEDs are androgynous or masculinizing, and a lot of PEDs used in sports are deployed in different manners or are completely different for different purposes as physique vs performance. It wouldn’t make sense to take a drug that just makes you big and bloated. A visual test is never useful for PED testing outside of bodybuilding.

It honestly amazes me how ignorant the public remain when it comes to doping in high level sports. Some people are just in denial that high level sports including the Olympics are full of people doping. I mean even the athletes who didn't place in the top 10 are most likely doping. Personally I don't think it takes away from their achievements but it is quite unfair that people from impoverished countries most likely have very limited access to doping...unless your Usain bolt lol

Part of me wishes doping was acceptable because I’d love to see the athletes put up absolutely insane weights and I also don’t view it as immoral (when it’s accepted in comp) because they have to still put the work in if not more to become elite. On the other hand if it was accepted it would unfortunately force some athletes hand that otherwise would absolutely not dope and they’d possibly have to bow out because they just wouldn’t be competitive. Tough call either way.

Well actually Russia does have a lot of influence over WADA, IWF, IOC, ROC etc, often the officials were Russian themselves as revealed by that whistleblower. I think the only reason they got busted was due to the West's geopolitical interests. China on the other hand has managed to avoid this due to a multitude of variables.
