Haha I realize it’s on the wrong speed!🤦‍♂️ I just ordered a thing to put in the hole in the middle so I may just listen to this 45 again once I get that and the speeds are correct😂 This was my first time doing this but let me know guys if you like this setup if the speed is right ha!

I think you already have a 45 adapter. It's a black plastic disc-shape embedded into the Victrola towards the top, between the arm and the record platter, it's flush with the black top of the player. I got my brother a player like that, and I can sort of see the adapter on yours. They used to cut out the middle to make the vinyl cost less for singles. That's why they have the big, donut holes. Some just have a normal size hole punched. Singles were put out on 45s. The Beatles often didn't even put 45 singles on the albums because they considered that better value for their fans.

Silas, you are amazing! I was excited when I saw the record player thumbnail. Then your playing of a 45 at 33 rpm (without the adaptor, no less) was the highlight of my internet experience today. Especially the fact you still liked the song. I really appreciate your effort to try new things. I feel like you got some of the experience of us old people when we were young. Crackling and popping allows you to identify your 45s as your own. Be a leader and continue playing 45s on the record player.

Ok, those singles have a really big hole in the centre, which means you need a little device that fits in that hole and converts it to the small silver pole in the middle of the platter. I think those larger holes were used for jukeboxes, but most domestic players have that small silver spindle in the centre.

also back in the 50's early 60's they made just players for 45 singles and the spindle was made to fit the hole.

Anyone going to tell him he has the record player on the wrong speed?! 45 refers to the ROTATIONS PER MINUTE - 45 vs 33 for an Album.. You need to switch it to 45 for singles otherwise they play slow and distorted to which you just reacted to. Kinda funny really as most kids don't know how to operate a record player properly.

Hey, Silas. If you’d like to have your mind blown by some amazing playing, try the studio version of Lopsy Lu by Stanley Clarke. It’s a jam with four of the hottest musicians around. Stanley is a bass player who is maybe like a cross between the funk of Stevie Wonder and the fire of Stevie Ray Vaughan. If you’re interested, the video is on KZbin with a thumbnail of Stanley’s debut album - a red cover with a black and white shot of Stanley and his bass and just his name on it.

Yes, it was slow. Albums were typically 33 and 1/3 revolutions per minute (rpm) and singles 45rpm. The record label will say 78, 45, or 33 1:3 and you should have a switch on your player to at least do the 45 and the 33 1/3 rpm records. 78 rpm players are rare nowadays, but you usually won’t find many records these days recorded at 78rpm.

When we were kids, we would play 45s at the wrong speed on purpose for a laugh. If we put on 78, we would hear The Chipmunks; if we put it on 33 1/3, we would hear BEARS. You had Bill Withers on "Bears" 🤣

Not that the fidelity of the old 45s are very good to begin with, but those types of record players are awful. The right speed helps too!😂😂😂

There should be a handle in the back to wind it up. Also, for better high fidelity, there should be a large curved, bell-shaped horn that projects the sound.

Somewhere on that machine, I assume, is a way to switch from 33 rpm to 45 rpm, and even possibly 78 rpm (for REALLY old records). You set the machine on 33 rpm (revolutions per minute) to play "albums." Albums are, of course, a collection of songs. You put the machine's setting on "45" to play what you have here, in this video. These small records are known as "singles", or "45s". Singles (aka 45s) have the hoped-for "hit" song on the A side, and usually a "filler" song on the B side. Cracks and pops were just something you put up with, with vinyl records. So, back in the day, when I bought a new album, I also at the same time bought a blank "cassette tape" on which to record my new album. Then, I would rush home to my stereo and carefully slice open just enough of the plastic wrapper to get the album out, and then remove the album from its cover -- being ever so careful to grab the disk only by its edge to avoid putting any fingerprints on the grooves of the record. Then, I'd admire the fresh, unscratched marvel I had in my hand, for a few seconds, before placing the disk on my freshly dusted "turntable", for the album to receive its first, inevitable scratches. Then, I'd spread a few drops of record cleaner on my record-cleaner pad/brush, get the turntable spinning, and then hold the damp, velvet-like, cleaner brush on the album for several revolutions, making sure all of the record's grooves got cleaned, then stop the spinning. Now, my record was ready to record. So, I'd put my blank cassette tape in my tape deck and get it ready to hit "record". When I was ready, and all systems were go, I'd hit record on the tape deck just before the turntable's "stylus", or "needle" reaches the record's grooves. Finally, I could sit back and listen to, say, side A of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album for the first time. Once side A was done recording, repeat the process for side B. I could also now replay the album many times, without adding more scratches to the tender vinyl, by simply instead playing the cassette tape version I already recorded. Eventually, you might actually wear out a tape through overuse, and then you'd have to record the album again, which meant playing the once-played album a second time. This was how I preserved the quality of my vinyl albums, as much as possible. Sorry for the looooooong description. Hehe

Ooh yeah, Bill Withers. Hey, at least you handled the records right. New or old and scratched, the amount of times I've seen people in movies and T.V. Shows slide it out the sleeve and yet touch the faces with all four fingers. Does my head in.

Useful Tip #1 for a turntable: It's called a 45 because you play it at 45 rpm. Not at 33 RPM speed as you would for an album. That's why you don't recognize the song. It's too slow.

OMG, Lol, wrong speed!! 🤣😂 Yeah, you need the middle piece so the 45 fits properly. Were there directions with the record player? I would have thought it would have come with the 45 middle piece. Will sound much better with correct speed. You will definitely recognize this song.
