Okay, this wasn't touched upon in the discussion about Harry, but, there is another layer to Harry saving his daughter. For starters, it was to show that Harry genuinely cared for his adopted daughter vs how Cheryl's biological mother treated her, which was with greed. This was to show how blood relations might not love each other and how adopted children could be loved, and, for it to be a man, it's pretty bold. Men are barely shown to be caring for their biological children. Caring for an adopted one, how terrible. This is even bigger in Japan due to reasons, at least according to Koji Suzuki, the guy who wrote The Ring.

the director, Christophe Gans, took a look at the original draft of the script which had Harry Mason as the main character and believed that the concern Harry was showing for Cheryl seemed more like that of a mother. Plus, he didn't feel people would be comfortable with a man screaming or bawling his eyes out in hysteria. So he changed the character to Rose instead. There you have it: an old-fashioned, ignorant, sexist believing emotions and concern for one's child is the domain of a mother. What pissed me off the most about this change is that, excluding the misandric context behind it, what we have here is creative lazyness. If the director was so red faced about Harry "acting like a woman" then maybe he should've actually WORKED ON IT MORE. You know, write it so Harry expresses fear and panic in a different way. Men do have those emotions, Chris, even if they appear subtle. But he didn't. He took the easy route and had Harry changed. I really loved Harry Mason in the game and would've enjoyed seeing his story play out on screen. If anything, it would've attracted an audience of devoted fathers because Harry's a great positive role model. Nope. Status Quo and Sexism truimphs over competant storytelling and creative risks.

I'm not sure what's up with an idea of men can't be loving and compassionate in people's mind. Courage and determination to protect someone are basically masculine ways of declaring love and care. Even if they didn't believe in a masculine parental love, they could have easily framed him as a knight in a shining armor. Henry from Part IV also comes close as such heroic person. Sure, he's just trying to get out of his room, but seeing people dying around him causes him to become more heroic and determined to stop Walter by protecting and saving Eileen.

5:24 I'm pretty sure the only reason they made Cybil so antagonistic in the film (where she wasn't in the game) is because that's the only way Hollywood knows how to write cop characters. Unless they're the main protagonist, they're almost guaranteed to be written like total jackasses who are needlessly antagonistic for no reason other than because that's a tired Hollywood trope.

I still adore this movie. I was born in 1990 and grew up playing Silent Hill - to the point I learned how to read Japanese just so I could play the Silent Hill: Play Novel on the GBA. When this film came out, I was 15 and actually had to get my brother to buy me and my friend two tickets to go see it. While both of us were miffed on some of the changes (mainly Cybil), it was still a really good adaptation. Some stuff didn't make sense (like the name changes and the bloody Sean Bean scenes), but the parts with Rose were really nice. The environment was spot on and it did give you that "alone" vibe like you get in the games. It's a good film if you understand it's based on the first game and not a replica - not like what Silent Hill: Revelation tried to be...and bombed for that reason.
@mastermarkus53078 жыл бұрын

Kids can understand dark shit. The only real trouble is they may not understand things in regards to sex and particularly sexual urges due to not reaching puberty, but Silent Hill is a game I understood as a teen and I could easily see a 9-year-old understanding it. And honestly, save for the gore, the game could have easily been PG-13 if a movie (not that I mind the movie being R, but still). Many kids play M-rated games while young. I even played an AO one as a teenager (though it was Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, which is M uncut now, and I didn't even realize you could get interactive sex scenes). Also, having a different opinion on this film does not mean they were too young to understand it. The gender swap thing has to do with societal sexism that many are oblivious too and the rest is just them having a different opinion, one plenty of people who watched the movie as adults have.

@I-didnt-ask-you7 жыл бұрын
l0zerzer0 The town of Centralia (sorry if I misspelled that) suffered a tragedy in the 1960's I believe when a garbage fire was blown by a strong wind blowing some of the lit debree into a coal vent. Beneath the town were miles of coal mines and it lit them on fire. All attempts to snuff it failed, so they condemned the town and declared it a hazard zone. All but 11 or so residents abandoned the town as roads cracked from the heat and toxic gases and ash came up from the ground. The fires beneath the town burn to this day 50 years later and are expected to burn for at least another 50. Ash and smoke still can be seen throughout the town. It's a sad story but very fascinating! Check it out if you can!

Well, we're getting another Silent Hill movie. Considering that the new film looks to be somewhat more faithful to the game it's going to adapt with a few alterations given the format (Silent Hill 2 and its Remake, which makes sense considering Silent Hill 1 and 3 were already loosely covered by Christophe Gans and M.J. Bassett in the former's first and latter's only foray into this iconic town), maaaaybe third time will be a charm and we'll get a movie that marries the visuals, sound design and recreated music of the first film with a good script and engaging characters? I dunno, man. I just think about this stuff.

I am overall slightly satisfied with the first Silent Hill film. Part of it is from how incredibly low the bar is set for faithful film adaptations from video games. However, I think the general vibe of the film is right. The atmosphere is spot on in many scenes and what's important to me is that the musical score from Akira Yamaoka matched. Obviously many of the changes I don't disagree with, there are some stupid references which I still like, and the plot definitely was off.

It really is a shame how badly the movie dropped the ball. While you can see the attention and care the makers put into everything from recreating some iconic scenes and making pretty good use of the music (even if some tracks felt tacked on, like they just took a "Greatest hits" list made solely of the OSTs from the games), the whole package is like a poorly made cake, a clumsy mishap that should have taken more time to refine itself. I remember seeing the movie in my senior year, and being on the fence with the whole thing. While I could barely understand the changes, it still managed to feel more like an adaption compared to the Anderson Resident Evil films which were pretty much just "My hot wife, featuring the douchebag-ified versions of Resident Evil characters and monster!" One thing I should point is (and I'm guessing Phelous does know or understand the concept himself), it's not dimensions that the town has, but more like layers that depend on how much influence the corrupted powers of the town is exerting. When it's just foggy, things are beginning to be affected, but it's still more or less the normal world. Then when it gets dark, shit is going south and only goes further depending on whatever is causing the events (as seen with the final levels of both the original and third games being full of impossible layouts and physics). Of course, I would imagine Phelous has seen or at least heard of Twin Perfect, so I won't get into a huge stint like those guys did back when they were a thing. However, the abandoned town aspect from the movie did make me think of a complete missed opportunity for its plot; having Alessa send out Sharon/Cheryl away from the town. While they only briefly talk about the evacuation when the fire broke out, it feels like that should have been the time for Alessa to send away her other half. But nope, the movie had to have a 30+ time gap so it could be set in the present day even though the year barely plays a role in what Rose is able to aside from using a GPS and her husband googling the fucking town.
@AtrocityEquine019 жыл бұрын
Honestly Phelous, this film is a bit closer to the source material (Parent trying to find lost kid, the atmosphere, the unsettling nature, and of course the otherworld transitions) than it *ever* is to the sequel and the Resident Evil films. I'd take Not-Silent Hill over those films any day.

There is light and there is darkness about this adaptation. Maybe it did not help that the franchise was brewing for some time when they made the movie cause they tried to add later stuff that did not really fit into a SH1 movie. And then making a sequel to a multi-ending game...quite a task. I would have loved a movie based on SH2 cause it was mostly a standalone.

10:15 - 10:25 I'm sorry but what?? Dahlia did not BURN Alessa, Dahlia performed the impregnation ritual which frightened/hurt Alessa, triggering her latent powers of Telekinesis to rupture their houses Boiler, causing an explosion and fire. This IS supported in the documents you find throughout Silent Hill 1 (the newspaper article detailing the explosion is currently only found in the EU/JP version of the game in Nowhere...). You're obviously going off the crap they detailed in Silent Hill Origins where they 'redacted' the article about the explosion. Being that game was not developed by Team Silent, I wouldn't count it as a proper telling of the events that occurred during Silent Hill 1. If one would accept that as canon, then have fun knowing that in SH BoM every event in the SH series is due to a magical Death Note that people write in. Wish I was kidding.... Other than that, great review Phelan.

Aww come on, it wasn't bad. It looked good. The "Rose is in Silent Hill, her husband is at the same spots but doesn't see Silent Hill" thing was interesting. It aged better than Tomb Raider, which was also once said to be a good videogame adaptation. And it's non-CGI for once, unlike the two RE movies (you know... the REAL RE movies, not the ones with Alice).

MforZorro | Movesets I love the Tomb Raider movies, even if they didn't aged well...

Agreed. For a videogame adaptation, an area notorious for being bad movies, it's one of the better ones. Revelations, on the other hand...

I can agree with all you complaints minus the whole witch burning cult thing. i mean ill admit they could have handled it allot better but I dont see a witch burning cult as something out of the realm of possibility for silent hill, had they written it better it could have still worked in the context of the film even with it following the first games story. I like the movie regardless of what anyone says, though I will admit I watched it before ever playing any of the games. I have beaten most of the main titles by now (just need to beat 4) and coming back to this movie I can definitely see what they messed up but this movie is what inspired me to play the games in the first place and in that sense ill always have a bit of nostalgic love for it. wouldn't recommend it to fans of the games but I would to people looking to get a basic idea of silent hills atmosphere and concept to see if silent hill is something that interest them
