The thing that always annoyed me about the Western Silent Hill games was that over exaggerated the nature of Silent Hill. You see, in Silent Hill 2 there's the whole thing with James coming to terms with what he's done and how he deals with that. Because he is drawn to Silent Hill, people have kind of entered into this false idea that Silent Hill is actually a benevolent spiritual entity that only wants to help people or something. This idea reached a fever point with Downpour where Silent Hill is depicted as being so benevolent that it's representative is a cheerful and friendly black mailman. The town helps Murphy admit what he's done and find closure and makes him a better person than he was before he came in. Like the entire town history, the hideous monstrosities, the evil cult shit, and the mentally constructed personal demons are all just the town playing psychotherapist to the deeply disturbed, gilt-ridden saps of the world. First of all, getting back to James' story, we have no proof that Silent Hill was trying to help James. If anything, it was keen to torture him with his guilt and try to break him or destroy him with it. James facing reality, accepting what he's done, and seeking redemption doesn't seem to be part of the plan, but rather going against the will of the town. Especially considering the endings [SPOILER ALERT] one of which has James actually killing himself and one where the town gives him a sexy copy of his dead wife only for her to be inevitably doomed to die the same way, you get the feeling that Silent Hill isn't trying to grant him peace of mind - but rather torment him. But as I said before, Western Silent Hill games kind of took this idea and ran with it, believing that Silent Hill is just a place you go when you're riddled with guilt and have personal demons to deal with and it saves you like a creepier version of Touched by an Angel. But that's not the case at all. Silent Hill is a purely malevolent entity that wants to eternally torture those disturbed souls it lures in and only by overcoming the very past that Silent Hill haunts them with are they able to leave.

To be fair if I can give credit anywhere Downpour at the very least has interesting characters and backstories to genuinely tie them together. Unfortunately the areas the game most lacks are in Silent Hills trademark horror. I think Silent Hill 2 outside of it's exceptional narrative and character development really doesn't hold as to the other 3 games as far as both horror and gameplay are actually concerned. Silent Hill 1 had a focus of intense fear amplified by it's soundtrack which is designed to set you on edge from the very first moment until the last. It's control scheme is outdated as hell but considering it's a PS1 game it uses the console so damn well and deserves a lot more praise than most credit it for. Silent Hill 3 unlike the first game chose to focus on making the atmosphere as unsettling as possible and then hit you with incredibly powerful moments that make an impression. My problem with SH3 is... well all the characters. Where Silent Hill 4 excels is with Room 302... this place has such an unsettling atmosphere throughout the majority of the game but it's something you get used to and the apartment is filled with so much attention to detail that when the second half of the game decides to completely f**k with your personal space it can be damn near traumatising. Also worth mentioning are the fact the ghosts more than any other enemy in the game unsettle and unnerve the shit out of me with their static whines and the way they approach. To be fair to 4 though I absolutely adore it's backstory involving Walter and The Room... yeah the characters maybe weak but the overarching story is amazing.
@NEETKitten7 жыл бұрын
personally, I like Downpour and think that one of its strengths is actually changing the backstory of the main character. Because in this case, he's so tortured by his own mind that his perceptions of the past are distorted, thus allowing the multiple routes thing to work. He might have done one or even all of the things shown through the stories, but he's SO guilt-ridden that he can't even remember what he actually did and what's a fabrication of his mind caused by the town. See, based on the other games, it seems like Silent Hill holds on to some of the stuff from its previous captive. hence why Pyramid Head shows up so much: Because James Sunderland's guilt still resides somewhat in the town. When they left, they left a part of themselves in Silent hill. They accepted their past and got redemption. They had no need for that guilt anymore, so they moved on from it. And THAT part of them never left Silent Hill. Their guilt and shame stayed there, forever tormenting the various sin-filled people who strolled into town.
@IcestormTundra7 жыл бұрын
There was an ending in downpour where if you die to the cop in the final fight the roles reverse and she becomes the prisoner and you're the cop, punishing her for not learning her lesson and messing her up in the head in the process. Whether or not silent hill is trying to help people is besides the point; we'll never know what's up with that town or if it even has motives, all we know is that murderers and guilt ridden souls are drawn there, and that they really should try to get out. Downpour did have a good story i think, i found Murphy more relatable than Harry or even Heather was at times. The whole conga-line of people doing awful things for vengeance was a pretty interesting idea in my opinion, with Murphy seeking revenge against the guy who killed his son, and then Ann wanting revenge against Murphy for 'causing' the death and suffering of her father, and in the end both being able to see the truth and how pointless it all was... That was good writing, and it felt like a new spin on the silent hill series. Take the town and do something new with it not based on previous games.

Yuki Nitta changing the backstory? LOL like, you play as Murphy only to find out your not Murphy but the cop with memories that may or may not be true. Furthermore, the nun presents you with your son as the bogee man or maybe its you or maybe not even real. who cares??? all the endings contradict each other. throw continuity out the window, all interpretations are both right and wrong.

Seriously though, the first time you came across one of the "lying figures" in Silent Hill 2 and you beat it with a pipe until it crumpled to the ground and remained motionless JUST long enough that when it started skittering at you like some kind of giant flesh-roach... Tell me you didn't soil yourself. In short, Yahtzee, I feel you. True, i did soil myself when i learned that the monsters' death was almost completely unpredictable. The combat in that game only existed for boss fights and to give you a false sense of security so that when you found some 20 bullets stashed around the place you'd feel invincible, and thus much more likely to get gangbanged by the nurses in the hospital. :P

I got to the Mary fight, but died and didn't save prior to the double Pyramid Head fight. I ragequitted for maybe 3 days, but then had to return the game to my friend. Thank you for the advice nonetheless, if i ever find the game on sale again, i'll do as you said. :P

Elias Warne but the gameplay is very difficult...more than the others in my opinion, the voice acting is off 90% of the time, the puzzles are that special kind of PSX obtuse, and I don't really find really any of the characters all that interesting aside from Lisa Garland But what it does well it does very well the trademarked camera angles, the beautiful yet cathartic soundtrack, it's idea to mask the render distance of the PSX, and the beautiful atmosphere I'm just saying in my opinion it's not the greatest just the first
@chukyuniqul6 жыл бұрын
I really enjoy the atmosphere of the first one. Out of all the first three games (slowly playing through 4 now since I'm kinda burnt out on it ) each seems to have a dominant emotion. The first one was pain, second one sorrow and third one anger. And while the most oppressive atmosphere ever (to me) was the hell hospital in the third, the overall atmosphere in the first feels so...uneasy. In a way it never settled into a tone to me. The school was weird that like it felt as if there's other living beings trapped in the hell, just outside your reach. The hospital was pure oblivion aside from Lisa's room and the game afterwards was pure torment with the sewers as a...thing, I dunno they kinda suck except for the ones before the amusement park. By the point you reach nowhere you're already either conditioned to accept horror or on the verge of breaking down (I always had to finish the game in one sitting because no memory card). It just looked so distinct in many ways, probably helped a lot by the poor graphics, strangely enough.

Little known fact: SH Downpour is Czech, not American. That's something I love so much about the Silent Hill series as seen by different developers (and yes, I believe the universally hated ones have solid merit to them). The first four games are Japanese and follow what people find scary in Japan - fear of the unknown, isolation, crippling personal guilt and the punishment thereof. Broad concepts. Homecoming was American and thus focuses on what many Americans are afraid of - domestic abuse, cruelty to children, violent fundamentalists, and being directly challenged/hunted. These are tighter concepts than the Japanese games and, in my opinion, are well executed. The game is different because a different culture made it. Downpour is Czech and surprise surprise focuses on what Czechs find disturbing - systematic institutions controlling people, being aware of many people's delusions, being SEEN as a delusion by someone else, frail tyrants forcing others into a destructive slavery, and (my personal favorite) this ongoing theme of fantasy vs reality - storytelling vs objectivity, fairy tale vs cold world. Screw the haters. I love this kind of stuff.
@TheMightyPika8 жыл бұрын
They're good, too! SH:SM is a brilliant concept that, while I think the later Beyond Souls did it better, it was trying something relatively new and I love the way it turned out. And I really didn't expect the ending at all (I got the "good" ending the first time) and it was wonderfully satisfying. I wasn't the biggest fan of Origins, personally - I didn't enjoy how it tried to retcon the original story by trying to push a new OC (Travis) into it. Shattered Memories was a better attempt at retconning since it kept the original cast and felt less like a fanfiction. HOWEVER! Writing choices aside Travis was a fun, interesting character with some creatively designed boss monsters. I found the controls difficult but not any worse than SH4. I can't fault the game too much because A. It was pretty low budget and the creators did the best with what they were given, and B. It was originally designed for the PSP with is also heavily limiting. It wouldn't be fair to put Call of Duty expectations on a PSP port.
@TheMightyPika8 жыл бұрын
Same! Origins was still fun and I applaud the creative team for making something unique. The idea of a random trucker being pulled into this mess by a desperate Alessa was not only sensible but realistic - poor kid needed help, so it makes sense she would cry out in the best way she knew how. I really don't understand the anger the fans have for anything but the first three (sometimes four, they hate it, too) games. I also enjoy SH2 and think it's a great piece of storytelling but I don't think it's orgasmically perfect. I honestly enjoyed SH5 just as much as 2, warts and all. Here's the thing I don't understand: fans keep saying that the first four are the "best" because a Japanese studio made them and an American studio (Double Helix which made 5, not Vatra which made Downpour - they're Czech) has no place putting their hands on the franchise. This argument would only make sense if Silent Hill was located in Japan, but it's not. Why is having a story taking place in America being told by Americans a bad thing? That's like getting angry over a Japanese version of Madam Butterfly for "not getting the nuances of the Italian original." Who cares about which one is the best? Every game is unique and stand-alone (save for 1 and 3 but they're still pretty solid by themselves) and new perspectives should be welcomed, not stomped on. Why get angry about it?

Yes they could have had better designed monsters (concept was cool but should have been more monsterous) but it often felt like a nightmare "OH GOD IM BACK HERE EVERYTHING LOOKS THE SAME THERES NO ESCAPE IM GOING TO DIE IM GOING TO DIE"
@retrogamelover20127 жыл бұрын
The problem with Homecoming was it felt like one of those cheap cash-in remakes at times, what with the bone-headed idea for Alex 's parents to treat our main character like shit, so they don't have to feel any remorse when sacrificing him, which is more likely to backfire than if you treated him like a god-damn human being. Plus, with the other aspects like heavy-handed fan service with Pyramid Head and the nurses, or with how some control/gameplay elements either give off the feeling that game was torn between horror and action, and not being able to find a midway point ala RE4, or could use some tweaking to properly work, or even to fit the bill of survival horror.

Three: Even pacing and tension. You want to steadily ramp up the tension with subtle cues and little details, but even when you pop a major plot reveal or scare, you need to keep the tension going without letting it fall flat. This counts for any media. You need to keep your audience enthralled while allowing the tension to be relieved at points, otherwise your audience will either burn out or lose interest. Finally, you need the experience to be enjoyable, and reward the audience.

I think some different principles apply. Certain aspects of Silent Hill reflect the character's past and mentality. If the entire past changes based on specific choices, symbolism and theme can start to lose groundwork. Whereas Heavy Rain's a more realistic mystery you're trying to solve, with most of the mystery set to be had for the first playthrough.

I am and forever will argue that Sonic Adventure 2 battle (you know the gamecube remake that had an incredibly shoddy tacked on local "multiplayer") was a great Sonic game (note I never played the original dreamcast version of it). The controls actually handled very nicely I thought and the 3 different types of levels was nice considering that it did provide some variance in a Sonic game without getting completely ridiculous like Adventure 1/dx did (though the Knuckles/Rogue missions were excruciatingly painful in some places). The story wasn't complete crap (at least by Nintendo standards its a fricking shining beacon outside of the Zelda and Metroid games. And of course the best part that I have sorely missed from every Sonic game that has come after it... THE CHAO GARDENS... ok maybe not. I did enjoy the chao gardens back when I was 8-10 probably wouldn't care too much anymore but still its a good feature for the younger audience.

Well, what he wants is where the choice you made effects what you do to redeem yourself, like in SH2. In there, the choices you make determine how you redeem yourself, but not what happened that made him become trapped in Silent Hill. So there's no focus. Also, in Heavy Rain, there's no replay value as the killer doesn't change, no matter what you do in the game, so the choices you make are irrelevant.

I'm beginning to think Yahtzee has a crush for Angela Orosco(It's her face on the cover, after all). Normally, I'd judge, but since I have a crush on Silent Hill 3/Alessa/Heather, I really can't. XD
@UndeadZamiel10 жыл бұрын
...don't know why I always thought it was james face on the cover. It clearly is Angela's face from the scene when she's lying on the floor staring at the knife.
@DeathMessenger198810 жыл бұрын
UndeadZamiel ... I know James is a bit of a pretty boy, but come on, he's no bishonen! XD On my end, I also have a thing for pale psycho brunettes. I also stare at knives a lot, so maybe I'm a little psycho too.
@UndeadZamiel10 жыл бұрын
Must be cause I've never owned Silent Hill 2 and only glanced at the case occasionally when I'd borrow it. Pale is definitely the way to go though.
@DeathMessenger198810 жыл бұрын
UndeadZamiel You can download it to PC, I think. Or buy Silent Hill HD. I never finished the game, but it's worth playing.
@UndeadZamiel10 жыл бұрын
DeathMessenger1988 Oh, I've finished it multiple times. Been meaning to get the HD collection but I've heard some bad stuff about it, technical issues and whatnot, so I'm waiting for my friend to play through it so she can tell me whether it's worth getting or not.

This is something i entirely agree with. If the original producer of the franchise doesn't want to continue the franchise, why is everybody else so insisting about continuing, thinking they can do better job than the guy who actually made it?

+Suika Ibuki As has become evident in the past few months, Konami is kind of run by morons.
@unknownanonymous26518 жыл бұрын
+MegamanXfan21xx No. It's headquarters is run by a dog at a control panel, with a dog biscuit on a string attached to the ceiling fan, flailing over and over, all over the console. If you got the origin of this reference.... it is a fitting description of Konami indeed.
@MegamanXfan21xx8 жыл бұрын
Even that dog did a better job of making a Silent Hill game.

The sequel will apparently be made by Hideo Kojima on the fox engine to top that off Masahiro Ito said if Hideo makes the game, he will also be on board so silent hill is firmly back in the hands of Japanese developers it seems, honestly cannot wait

christ SH2 was the reason people sat at the start screen just to see if anything happened, and yes some people may have hated it but the HD collection was good if for anything u can have the song siren Mary Elizabeth McGlynn voice Mary/Maria. She is one of the few things the other SH games have in common shes on all the soundtracks.

I think it's a bit odd that he makes the comparison of the Silent Hill games to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in the steady downspiral and then highlights how 3D Sonic games made the titular character nearly impossible to control when Silent Hill isn't exactly known for its favorable control mechanics (SH, much like the Sonic Adventure series, is a game you *get used to* in terms of controls, not something that ought to actually be easy for the sole purpose of comfortable gameplay). The Sonic Adventure series didn't cause the series to go down hill, they were the last of the decent games before Colors (well, that game had improved gameplay, but plot has long since been abandoned), whereas the next-gen console reason of Sonic '06 was what truly started the series on the path to ruin, as anyone would know.

Survival Horror needs to be three or four main things. One: Scarcity of weapons (And necessitating scavenging or flight from enemies as applicable). It's not going to be intense or scary if you can pump down a mob with an AA-12 Automatic Assault Shotgun with 200 rounds in reserve. Two: ATMOSPHERE! Jump scares are what get kids to feel scared and wet their diapers, atmosphere and ambiance are much more important to a truly mature survival horror game. Continued in next comment.

The emotions and feelings it raises can't be achieved with ANY other videogame. SH1 is just unique and special, absolutely! I love SH2 and SH3 as well, but SH1 is my fav.

I get more horror from Minecraft that any game I've played in I don't know how long. The idea that when I'm walking through my home built tunnel from one house to the next and it's possible that I could die due to a runaway creeper and lose my 27 levels of work really does terrify me. especially knowing that Enderman can teleport. The noises, though juvenile, are unrelenting and pant wettingly frightening.

I'm sure that the best horror game is one that resides on the right side of the uncanny valley, but staying at the depth that one can still find an angler fish

Aaah. I remember my first horror game, Alone in the Dark. And ten brownish teethy polygons jumping through the window to chew off my legs. The horror? Trying to control those bloody legs to knee the teethy polygons and to kick the teeth in instead of doing cancan in the opposite direction. Ever since, survival horror controls and me, mortal enemies, that we are.

Silent Hill focuses on one character, while Heavy Rain had many characters. In Silent Hill, it was about facing internal conflict, while in Heavy Rain, it was about solving a mystery involving a crime. Silent Hill Downpour suffers from having multiple conclusions because it prevents the game from being able to maintain focus on the internal conflict, and Heavy Rain suffers from not having multiple conclusions because it renders a number of its central events meaningless.

And then they say "He's right behind you!" And you run down another corridor before he says "He's stopped...wait no he's right there! Run!" ANd you run a different direction. After about 10 minutes of this, you finally stop underneath a light and he screams "He's right on top of you!" and it turns out he mistook you for the monster all along...and the guy on the phone's name is Patrick.

also the fact is in silent hill the town fucks with you depending on what wrong you have done (kill a child = headless babies) but in heavy rain there is more leeway.
