Not really. It still has stuff going on in the background that we can't initially see, but keep in mind that anywhere that's not pretty much entirely a vacuum has exactly the same stuff going on while also being a hell of a lot less busy and complex than an area that contains matter and gravity and the like. Just like the characters still a human being and of course there's a crap ton of complexity going on in each human psyche, but some characters are written with a whole lot believable depth or interesting personalities going on. There's always stuff going on in even the most boring of places or things. It's still significantly less than everywhere else.

Also had a hard time with Lara Croft in the new tomb raider (even though I loved her in some of the previous ones) as her sex noises while falling down a mountain and constant whining about how she will never be good enough or strong enough did get a little bland after a while (YOU CAN DO THIS LARA). Japanese games tend to get away with over sexualisation because they actually make the female characters quite strong. I mean look at Senran Kagura for example: everyone has two blobs of jelly on their chest, they show off their body and even get their clothes shred into pieces, and yet they can kick ass more than most male heroes. Or maybe Japanese just don't give a crap, because they've realised that fiction is fiction.
@alexanderstilianov9 жыл бұрын
Arexion5293 That and they're intelligent enough to not take modern feminists seriously. Scratch that... They're smart enough to not even have feminists complain about fiction.
@battlekitty82779 жыл бұрын
Alex Well, fiction reflects the views of the time as well as reinforcing said views, so feminists like me will be very irritated if women are portrayed as weak or completely helpless in modern fiction. There's nothing wrong with it at all.
@Arexion52939 жыл бұрын
Battle Kitty! It reflects the thoughts of its creator(s), which may reflect the views of the time. Even then it all depends on the work of fiction itself.
@whynotguy1239 жыл бұрын
So you're saying that if you're going to give a female character large breasts and a big arse, you have to make her strong?
@Arexion52939 жыл бұрын
Jonny Roberts Nah, I'm just pointing out that Japanese seem to do that quite often, which might be one of the reasons why no one complains. On the other hand there are also plenty of cases when those characters exist solely for fanservice and even then no one seems to care. So maybe they've simply realised that fiction is fiction.

And since I know KZbin and Google are tracking my interests which I've never show for it that means they bought all the advertising space which is synonymous with "this product sucks." And frankly the reality is the more anythings shoved in my face the less I want it that's just a fact lol. I liked candy bars as a kid but when my mom put them with my breakfast, lunch box, dinner, and snack I didn't want them anymore(may have been her plan) I'm a big boy let me know it exists and if I want it I'll go get it, you save millions and millions only showing me one time.

And that is besides the point, I am saying that you are calling it a terrible movie without having seen anything besides the trailer, which is just fucking stupid. Ok, kids, i will explain. YOU think objectification means showing women looking sexy and scantily clad, but that's not what it means. It means that women are viewed as objects, which often is the case in video games. Most games treat women as a goal or something that has to be saved because they can't fend for themselves, hence women not being so happy about it.

The problem isn't female characters being pretty. It's about female characters being pretty THINGS. If they serve no other purpose than to just sit there looking pretty with no important tasks to accomplish or opinions/insights to give, then they are not a person, they are a decoration. And that's when it's bad.
@Phantom-kc9ly9 жыл бұрын
So do you have a problem with the billions upon billions of walking targets known as men in first person shooters?
@XShadOBabeX9 жыл бұрын
bestpsychosean hasnolastname I don't play FPS games, so my opinion is probably not very relevant. But if they are in a war setting and women aren't allowed on the front lines, then you're not going to have a lot to shoot at if you don't shoot men. But I understand the dislike of the "men are more disposable" thing.
@Phantom-kc9ly9 жыл бұрын
***** But its been passed into law for years that women can join the infantry. Personally, I still haven't seen a woman actually join any infantry unit. But since we're talking fantasy there should 50/50 at least.

So we should raise a fuss over all the men this happens to in games? Not every character can be the main character it doesn't just happen to women the only reason people care is because it's "apparently rampant" in games and if you care so much don't buy games that have non female protagonists or make your own game

I can't remember the last game I played that genuinely objectified women that most people don't hate. Dragon's Crown, to a small extent. Possibly DmC Devil May Cry. Even as far as tropes go, it's far, far more common to see scantily clad women as badass action girls than completely helpless.

Dmc's kat wasnt objectified. At one point in the game she had to he saved because she was shot and kidnapped but just so happens to be female as well. She couldve been a dude in the same situation and the same events wouldve transpired.
@SuperArppis9 жыл бұрын
AfricanSpaceJesus I agree... She wasn't, she saves Dante and Dante saves her. If woman always needs to be on top of sittuation and never do mistakes or never need help is the only way writing female characters, why not just have male characters. Because you can do ANYTHING with male characters and nobody really cares. That way we don't have to take the fine comb at every minor or major female character and whine about every small itty-bitty detail where they might mommentarily feel "weak" or unlikable. :p

I'm tired of this whole "womanz r porrly done in vidya gamze" argument mainly because _everyone_ is poorly done in most video games. The men are all uncaring, ultra stud muffins and the women are all emotional, super sexy tarts. And, (and yes, you can use "and" to start a sentence despite what your elementary school teachers told you) just for the record, there is a big difference between a sexy character and an objectified character, a distinction many seem incapable of making. Just because Sexy Ms Sassypants is wearing a skimpy costume and flaunting her sexuality _does not_ make her a sexually objectified character. She only becomes objectified when her sex appeal is her one and only character trait.
@smileyboyrocks10 жыл бұрын
Regarding the issue of both genders being poorly represented, that's true, but it's not a problem in the same way for men. The uncaring ultra-stud muffins are conceived for the purposes of self-projection by the target audience, which is still largely assumed to be male, and as such the female characters are often conceived to compliment the power fantasies that the male characters lead by further pandering to the egos of the audience. I do agree with you that sexualisation is not, strictly speaking, synonymous with objectification (some of my favourite female character in fiction are heavily sexualised), but I also think it warrants pointing out that the excessive number of sexualised female characters found in nearly all forms of popular culture is indicative of a broader social trend that fails to represent women who are not typically attractive. I also think, and please don't be offended, that simply dismissing the argument (as you seem to be trying to do) because of how prevalent the cases supporting the argument are is not a good idea. The issue needs to be laid out and considered fairly by consumers, not dismissed simply because a considerable number of the arguments being made don't stand up fully to scrutiny. Please think about this.
@Skaitania10 жыл бұрын
smileyboyrocks The games industry has done what every other industry does. Appeal primarily to its main audience, with only exceptions going the other way. It's the same with cars, toys, clothes. A male model in underwear advertising a car would be seen as 'provocative', instead of being directed at a female audience. Maybe because there is still an subconscious undercurrent in both genders to see "a woman who watches sexy men (without the ultimate intention of marrying them)" as a slut, while is it perceived as completely normal for men to watch sexy women, and no one would immediately assume he wants to marry her. It is changing, I dare say, but it is slow change. And (starting sentences with 'And' is cool!) it will most likely not be the end of sexualized women, but rather the beginning of showing men the same way. Because, 'sex sells', which ironically goes for both genders (even though feminists seem to insist otherwise), and so the advertising industry will just do what they do best. Feed the masses with stereotypes. I do not have a huge issue with it, mind you, mainly because I believe it is somewhat a biological part of our brains, like it is for dogs or birds. But being raised in a civilization of commercials that show girls in bikinis to get me to buy an alarm clock has somewhat immunized me to this shallow attempt. Genes still make me look at them, but I do not run for the next store, and the same goes for games. Now I just believe they try to hide the fact that is has nothing else to offer. If they start doing it with men, it'll just be the same thing for a different audience.
@50Calabyte10 жыл бұрын
smileyboyrocks So what you just said is "men as typically attractive men is fine because 'power fantasy' but women being typically attractive in video games is not." Okay, sure, that's some Grade-A Feminist logic you got going there. And really, hand-waving away the objectification of men in video games because "Oh every guy wants to be that" is just as retarded as saying "Every girl wants to be big-breasted". Not every guy is jerking off while beating their chests and howling at the thought of being Marcus Fenix. Every industry always likes to portray characters as attractive people. Why video games get shit on while everyone else gets away with it is beyond me.
@smileyboyrocks10 жыл бұрын
You misunderstood me. Firstly, I did make a point of saying that "it's not a problem in the same way," not that "it's not a problem." Those characters are undeniably written to pander to what is presumed to be a predominantly male audience, and yes, it is still sexualisation, but it's not objectification because the term objectification refers not simply to sexualisation but also to the roles that characters are assigned within the narrative (with objectified characters being characters who are reduced to roles equivalent to inanimate objects, such as rewards or possessions to be collected). Men in games (and yes, many other branches of culture) are rarely disempowered in the same way and are often framed as either self-projection models or role models. I do agree that it is a problem; it does reinforce negative stereotypes, but not in the same way. Secondly, I also made a point of emphasising the fact that I don't have an issue with sexualisation. You can pander to sexuality and not objectify. Case in point: the French arthouse film "Blue is the Warmest Colour." It's damned close to pornographic, but no objectification goes on, and I'd argue that that makes it fine. In gaming, you could easily (and quite rightly) reason that a character like Lara Croft is not an objectified character because she is empowered and has a personality. The same goes vice versa: you can objectify without sexualisation. Thirdly, I do wholly agree with you that not every guy wants to be Marcus Fenix, which makes it all the more perplexing that various industry professionals seem to think that we do. Hell, I am a guy and I have no interest in being the pinnacle of masculinity. The fact that it's not a universally accurate assumption that the industry pros are making doesn't change the fact that it is the assumption that they're making, and that a portion of the audience doesn't see it as a problem. Fourthly, I also made a point of referring to popular culture in general, not just gaming. Schools of thought analysing gender representations exist in every facet of popular culture, so stating that gaming is being victimised while other mediums go untouched is, frankly speaking, wrong. Feminist perspectives on film, for example, have existed for decades, and the arguments are still evolving and being put across. It's just that gaming can still be said to be in its infancy as an art form and is becoming a more integral part of mainstream culture, therefore it's coming under scrutiny more and more. Gaming is not being specifically targeted, but the discussion of it from an intellectual perspective is becoming more widespread and therefore it might feel like it's being targeted.

smileyboyrocks For many women, being sexually attractive IS the power fantasy. I see things like "Location: In ya man's bed" or labels like "hot" "sexy" or even "pornstar" as things women choose for themselves. Just because video games tend to be created by men for men, doesn't mean women are above the behavior. I bet that if there wasn't already a ripped, smart, mysterious, detective in spandex with a utility belt for anything, women would create it. Heck, I pull out an unconventional swiss army knife and women gawk at it.

I'm glad you're one of the people who didn't bitch about how this game was sexist or as some dared say, mysoginistic towards women(not that you really care anyway). Julliet was just her own character. She was not meant to properly represent all girls. I would also like to add that she has 2 other sisters who are markedly different from her yet still are ass kicking zombie hunters. If all the girl characters looked and acted in the same ditsy way, then I could sort of see the point. However, that was not the case at all. People really just do want to bitch about anything.
