"Sighted three Enemy Submarines. Sank two of the same with deck gun. One Escaped. Apologies for Job Unfinished." -Taken from the Radio report of Captain Buck O'Hare, October 13, 1942. Your sub's 3 inch gun would definitely have a Higher rate of fire compared to the larger 5.5 inch guns of the Japanese Sub, Even more so with how experienced your crew are! All those trawlers and Junks made for excellent target practice for your crew, and made them extremely good shots and fast loaders. Quite an exciting Battle, and looking forward to more of USS Salmon's exploits! Oh, and remember to put on an Air radar and a better AA gun once your patrol is done, it'll save you a lot of grief against enemy Aircraft.

Something the game doesn't tell you: When you get a new boat during the career, it's given in it's default state which in this case meant that you lost the 20mm Oerlikon and the SJ Radar and you need to buy them again. Also, since the different boats have slightly different crew layouts, game in your case accidentally misplaced some of the crew. Result of this is empty 1st and 3rd Deck watch which is one reason for lack of spotting callouts and some of the crew are in wrong compartments of the boat. Short guide to crew management: Icon on picture is specialization, green bar on the left is skill level of the shift (1,2,3), top green bar is for skill level of the on-duty/battle stations crew. And like someone mentioned, check if the SD radar in on, game might have turned it off.

Looks like the SD radar mast is not raised. Should be almost as high as a raised periscope when extended.
@malkymac72588 ай бұрын
Taff, do you have your SD Air Warning Radar switched on? When it is on, it picks up planes at about 10-13 miles out. You should be able to get to periscope depth long before they get to you. It also appears you didn't pick up the SJ Surface Search Radar for the new boat. It should be available for free from about June 1942.
@roberts19388 ай бұрын
I wonder if you have radar warning of planes? You should avoid swimming near the surface on sunny days. It is better to move on the surface at night. Although the Japanese didn't get away with it. A very interesting episode. I have never seen such a charge against two other submarines. Who invented this anyway - AI?

Maybe the boat's chief is making successful (but unauthorised!) modifications to his Mk 14's? Often, it's the low ranking petty officers who know how to make balky equipment work, but they can't ask for official permission to make the necessary modifications, because shore based senior officers behind their desks either refuse to consider it because the idea came from 'the lower decks', or get butthurt that their shore based teams didn't come up with the idea themselves.

Well, the MK 10's were actually quite reliable. It was the MK 14 that ran too deep, circle ran, blew up too early due to the magnetic influence fuse, or refused to blow up at all. All of these problems together is what made for the roughly 76% failure rate. It also didn't help that the Navy's quartermaster at the time had a stake in those torpedoes since one of the components(I think the impact fuse, but not positive on that at the moment.) was under his patent. There's also the fact that this was at a time when the US government actually cared about budgets(I know, what a crazy concept to try to stick to your budget.). That ten thousand dollars per torpedo price tag made the Navy very hesitant to do much in the way of proper testing. So the few test launches they got was with a buoyant dummy warhead to make sure they could easily recover the torpedoes and get them back into service. Sometime after the dummy testing they changed over to a larger warhead that changed the hydrodynamics and created a low pressure zone right on the depth control port. That resulted in the torp running about 11 feet lower than the set depth. The MK14 was just a disaster all the way around and most of the major issues didn't get fixed until late into the war. I can't believe that I-201 class sub went toe to toe with you on the surface. Those things submerged are nearly as fast as your boat is on the surface. I really do wish they had a sim with playable Japanese subs, they had a number really interesting designs. Plus, their torpedoes were fast as heck and carried a huge payload.

Great job in sinking those sail boats, destroying pickets and crippling enemy food supplies at the same time.. Two with one stone as it we're. The war in the Pacific is going to get tougher and tougher as we go along so.. best brace ourselves, mind you torpedoes will improve at the same time so that's something that we can grateful for. To learn more about just how bad the Mk. 14 torpedo was read "Iron Men and Tin Fish: The Race to Build a Better Torpedo During World War II" - by Anthony Newpower. The faults with that torpedo cost the lives of many sailors and it took until 1943 before they started to get it sorted out, thanks to Adm. Lockwood. If you study the patrol reports of that time between 1943 and 1944, the successful attack and tonnage numbers skyrocket.
@neptunenavalmods44208 ай бұрын
I read about how the USS Tinosa fired almost all her Mk14's at a huge whale factory ship (19,500 tons) - nearly every one was a dud and it got away. Such a frustratingly bad weapon for the Americans....maybe the war would have ended earlier if it had worked properly
@nerd1000ify8 ай бұрын
Early war German torpedoes were nearly as bad, the U-boats failed to sink many important Allied ships because of them. In fact it seems that it was only really the Japanese and the Brits who had their torpedoes in good order at the onset of hostilities.

The Sentaka-Dai boats were not launched until 1944 and not operational until early 1945. Only 3 were completed and none were sunk before war's end. Not only that, but a single shell through the pressure hull would have been more than enough to destroy one. In these aspects, the game is historically and physically inaccurate.

37:47 - "I don't like this at all" - Well, whose fault was it for making a needlessly STUPID decision to engage enemy submarines with your deck gun when you could've just as easily submerged and blasted them to smithereens with torpedoes without endangering your crew? Only have yourself to blame for that one! And again, the game puts ships that were YEARS from entering service in the game early. The Type C3 I can possibly excuse, as - despite the first boat of the C3 Type not entering service until late December 1943 - the earlier Type C1s were commissioned starting in late March 1940. The Sen Taka boat, on the other hand, that's absolute BS. The first of them weren't commissioned until February 1945, and they never left Japanese waters!
