As a species we seem to have 'stepped out' of nature and learned to act upon it. This is represented by our wearing of clothes. Unlike the rest of the animal kingdom which are still in nature and bound by it. Although we are seperated from nature it is the platform we stand upon. It is very difficult for us to change and who says what we need to change to save ourselves? oh and thank you Joan for your the beauty of your soul.

The 'death' was an accident as a result of Lowell trying to 'save' that one forest. The others would not listen to him and his devotion to the forests made him 'temporarily' insane with the desire to 'protect'. That is part of the forestry's pledge. While I also don't condone what he did I can understand it and appreciate it and probably do the same in his shoes with the same situation. The lone dome floating away in space with the 'last' forest from the earth in it. That's a powerful statement
@HailAnts Жыл бұрын
No. Temporary or not he was a psychotic murderer. In the end it's one of the reasons he kills himself..
@HailAnts Жыл бұрын
@Planet Pop Videos - I think he had an excuse for their deaths. He told the earth station that the 'storm' he went thru, the one that destroyed Louie, caused the pods to eject, and they believed him. Either way, no, he murdered his crew mates in cold blood. With prejudice because they weren't tree huggers. Completely unjustified first degree homicide. He deserved life in prison or death.
@HailAnts Жыл бұрын
@Planet Pop Videos - Yeah, and the fact that in his mind it was war is what makes him psychotic. I don't care if it's a hypothetical future, trees are never worth more than human life..
@starmnsixty1209 Жыл бұрын
@Planet Pop VideosLowell knew also that with the Valley Forge destroyed, and himself deceased, there was no reason for the other ships to stay. Otherwise they would just as likely have destroyed the forest dome had they found it. And yes, his death was an attempt at atonement for the killings as much as he could ever do so.
@matthewdavies20572 ай бұрын
Or, for the one forest to escape the senses on the pursuing ships had to be temporarily blinded. To do that he had to push the button in person himself. The fact that he was a multiple murderer contributed to his decision. He could never go home to the machine world Earth had become. He had to face his punishment. If it saved Earth's wildlife so much the better. Boom.

I always thought this was a response to 2001: A Space Odyssey, released four years earlier. Instead of the cold and obedient David Bowman, the idealistic and emotional Freeman Lowell rebels and instead of destroying Hal 9000, tries to 'humanise' the astrodroids. Likewise the alternative 'stargate' through Saturn's rings 'reveals' nothing, no aliens, no monoliths. Humankind, as represented by Lowell must be its own saviour, the only redemption comes by keeping the plants and animals alive

Yes a very good film but sadly did not get the recognition it deserved. Not enough lazer guns and explosions for it to get noted! I saw it when I was about 5 and i always remmember the lonely little robot at the end with the watering can while Joan Baez sings in the back ground. It was only in my teens did I understand why Bruce Dern blew up the remaining space craft to preseve the final forest. Brilliant film. Fantastic story too.

One of my all-time favorite films. As a child and teen I thought by the time I am Freeman Lowell's age, we will have not gone the way of the film. We will do better. We will not destroy God's creation. Now, I am bitter, very bitter. I came back from the white powdered glass beaches and blue green water of Destin, Florida last month. Truly beautiful. What's it going to be like now?! Hideous blobs of tar bespoiling and bespotting the water and sand?! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Freeman Lowell seemed the only one who took his mission seriously. The other men behaved like frat boys. In the end he imposed out of his guilt for killing the others, the supreme penalty on himself and paid with his life after ensuring as well as he could that the last extant forest would survive him. His debt was as paid as it could be. As I said, he was the only one who realized the seriousness of his mission.
@Sonnabend007 жыл бұрын
His mission does not excuse or mitigate the fact he committed three cold blooded murders. No tree anywhere is worth a human life, and his extremism blinded him to his own zealotry. This film can be summed up as :tree hugger commits murder for Mother Gaia...which is a corollary for the greenies and their idiocy.

Really? No tree is worth the life of say, a Joseph Stalin, an Adolph Hitler. Then there Unit 731, of the Imperial Japanese Army. They conducted biological and chemical warfare research. Even more horrifying bacteriological experimenrs involving the vivisection of conscious prisoners all overseen and controled by General Shiro Ishii, of the Japanese Imperial Army. In short they were weaponizing enough toxins, to put the whole of the humanity in the grave many times over.Compared to three characters who were not worthy of the air they were breathing and the last remaining samples of Earth's ecosystem. I'd space them in a heartbeat. And so would you if the fate of humanity and the earth were on the line, and if you were really honest with yourself you would admit it to yourself.
