Using an engine to manufacture side variations misses out on all the real side variations that the engine does not show you because they are worse than the side variations it does show you, even though a human has to consider them. For example, near the end, black cannot capture the rook on g4 because of Nf6+ winning the queen. It is things like this that make it painfully obvious that an annotator is quoting an engine.

It's a monstrous or, even more appropriate, monster bishop pair. "Monstrosity" is typically used in a negative context toward something. A dictionary might say they are related, but connotation is also important to keep in mind. This is where a thesaurus would come in handy. You can use the word monster as an adjective as well as a noun. As always, brilliant content.

Is chess reduced to speed? Personally I love speed chess, but I also like long thought out games. I taught chess basics to a lot of prison inmates....king and pawn against a king....how to checkmate using a bishop and knight. Playing speed chess is really fun if you can talk trash to your opponent. Otherwise it is not real chess to me, fun in lots of ways. but thought out no. I once played a 50+ move blindfold game against an inmate. I had white, he chose the Caro Kahn , ended in a rook and pawn game. Later we reconstructed that game and talked about it. He was very gifted, learned how to memorize games, play blind fold and think. He was operating a sowing machine while we played. He was not great at speed chess, but his acumen for tactics and end game strategies was better than me. And I taught him. I am so proud of this guy!

Congratulation, you find the only move that loses for black because of Nf6+ forking the king and the queen.

10:16 - Black bishop to c3, threatening/diverting the white queen. Does this not work out similarly?

No. If Bc3 white can reply with Qd1, getting the queen out of danger and defending the f1 rook.

@@johnwamsley1896 I thought the same thing as OP, Bc3 is sub-optimal but for a different reason: after Rxf7 Qxf7 white can block back rank check with Qf2, queen and bishop supporting each other and leaving black's bishop hanging with no real target or follow up move. Qd1 is a blunder after rooks are exchanged black wins the bishop on e3 and white has to give up their other rook for bishop or lose the queen next turn by Re1 (pin).
