I spent 5 weeks in Soviet Rumania in the seventies. The family I was staying with (in a wooden house with outdoor loo and oven) in the suburbs of Bucharest, explained how corruption was an integral part of soviet administration. Getting rid of corruption is almost impossible because the lawmakers are the ones who most benefit from it. When money determines your position, very obviously, merit and competence are rare, almost inexistent.
@martavdz49724 ай бұрын
There´s no "Soviet Romania", Romania was at least nominally independent. Also, a wooden house with an outdoor loo was a minority, not a common thing in the Warsaw Pact countries. Agreed on the corruption, though.
@shermoore16934 ай бұрын
@@martavdz4972 By 'Soviet Romania' I meant Romania as part of the Soviet Union. Many young people don't know which countries were part of the USSR. From what I saw small wooden houses (1 central room + one more room to the left and one to the right) and outdoor loo and oven and small yard surrounding, were easily the majority. The only large, brick houses belonged to government/military officials and the important ones (mostly military people) had villas in beautiful avenues. When I sat down on the grass in a beautiful park, the police arrived to fine me and immediately about 20 people appeared and jeered at the police, defending me. They hated the police. The family of 5 that I was staying with asked me to try to get them out of Romania. I was so happy for them when, years later, I watched Ceausescu being kicked out.

Jonathan, the boiling frog, I hope you find my comment, and find time to read this: Off subject, I know, but I want everyone to realise what is going on in the Baltic right now. Also, please understand that YT is giving me a lot of grief, so I use French to overcome their censors. I know what is publicly visible, and what is not, because I monitor my comments history. This comment is an amalgam of pervious posts. The Baltic status. Russia is not just making a provocation, or just a land grab, it is strategic. Those islands Russia is trying to seize near to Finland and Estonia should have a NATO military presence, (now!!!) on these islands to prevent Russian occupation. People are not aware just how strategic these islands are. These islands will allow the blockade of St Petersburg. This is what Russia is afraid of, and the West needs to pre-empt this occupation move by the Russians. Now some sarcasm.... Then Kaliningrad does not belong to Russia. I think the Kaliningrad enclave, should be declared an independent country, and we'll call it "East Prussia" provided the people are willing, but I suppose such a task as asking the people is impossible, This would be more inline with the historical claims over territory that Putin makes. (This is sarcasm with a strong flavour of truth thrown in) Maybe such counter-propaganda could reach the ears of this enclave. I hope people will take at least two things from this. 1. Military strategy. 2. The need for counter-propaganda I have been advocating serious action in certain circumstances, but fucking YT will not allow this, it is an insane situation seriously hampering awareness of this fucking stupid war. OK, I know using French language will confuse YT censors. I apologise that you will need Google Translate to read some of my comments. When we read "retourneront" in the lost in translalation version, I originally said "scuttling back", and I prefer this idea, lol

Great idea for compulsory military service, but should be from 14-19, and combined with secondary and vocational education. Everyone should leave this service literate, numerate, and independent, with a bank account, a driving licence, enter work with a trade or vocational qualifications or be able to go on to tertiary education for professionals and specialists. Also, the currently lacking concept of respect and self-control, and the ability to make healthy life-style choices, when the population's general fitness and health outlook is increasingly poor. In times when defence suddenly seems to be necessary again, we do not need to have to conscript and train willing or unwilling civilians, for a incipient conflict, as we did twice last century.

Most people are not that worthy of respect but you’re saying they must obey someone or other that you don’t even know yourself for the hell of it. That’s a dictatorship. 18 year olds do not know who they are, they must have time to find out. Nothing in the world is standard as much as you might like to think it is.

Less abstract; you are a fine communicator. One remarkable achievement: You reveal the emotional subtext affecting complex human reactions to threats. An example: Connects the dots among poisonings of individuals as well as poisoning attacks on general public. An example of evocations of fears and panics to salt general feelings of security with internal and external threats, which are underlined by these difficult to prove but suspected random acts of violence. Combine this with wild claims designed to create cognitive chaos and confusion, reinforcing at best public uneasiness and nervousness.

I always enjoy listening to your shows. However you never address the one thing that Ukraine had plenty of but pissed it all away. They had the same amount as russia however a country being in an active hot engagement from 2014 until current. What I am discussing is Time, Leadership foresight, and action pre conflict. Facts we can all agree that when russian supported little green men and Wagner forces attacked and stole land, Equipment and did unspeakable war crimes in the first attack. Neither America not Great Britton that answered the call to respond to Ukraines attack by a foreign power attacking its land integrity. And then the loss of Crimea with being being forced at gunpoint to sign that they wanted russia to control them. russia had taken land by force along with stealing the Naval Base on Crimea not one shot was fired at that time. russia commander turned youtuber now prisoner Gerken downed a civilian airliner over Ukraine airspace. I understand at the time with a forced civil war going on however that is when Government does it's governing. During the highest air raid attacks in World War 2 that the Nazi's had a higher build to damaged ratio even higher than America at the worst of the bombing. Things could be a lot worse. There should have been defensive fortifications that would have created infrastructure jobs. Creating a working economy getting monies worlds banks and forgivable loans with countries in NATO and the EU. You create fall back points like the Swiss have that are dam's, Bridges, rail lines, and public roads that have explosives built into the country's infrastructure. If that army tries to cross that segment of lands infrastructure is destroyed in seconds from a control room were the high brass can make the choices. That is scorched earth tactics that make everything useless to the military they can have the land but there is no cover for your people nothing from you gain control of. How the hell they let soledar fall with the largest soviet stockpile of munitions in new old stock. How it was not either destroyed or distributed out better. During the leadup of the attack. I am going to describe it the best way I can. As a person who did emergency response calls for Hurricane Katrina. I worked as a EMS dispatcher from Minnesota taking over the 911 calls for the City and Parishes also through the behues that were flooded. So for about a week everyone knew from the international weather channels and all stuff forecasting said it would be a small storm but to leave the area just in case. Foresight used. Then day 2 people were boarding up buying up all the rations they could to either ride out the storm, or to get in the car's trucks and leave town. Day three people had either left the area or some came back because they forgot something. Or they came back to check stuff out. Now by this time the south bound lanes were opened to north bound traffic to expedited the moving of traffic. The storm could rise to a possible 3 to 4. The Army Corps of Engineers said that most of the man made embankment levies were only rated at a level three highest. What should have happened was that all people should have been forced out of the area's. Lack of Foresight. Staff left and abandoned the most vulnerable people. The elderly people at nursing homes were not evacuated out. Even police left their post when the storm came. When our cultural evolved beings went back to the basic primate the weak died or were victims. The strong took over especially from the superdome. Gangrapes killings torture basic primal mob mentality. Yet we also had neighborhoods that came together to form protective communities. Best way I can describe that time is like the show of the Walking Dead. You either survive or you die. So Ukraine not paying attention and telling the world that America was trying to inflame relations. The French were trying to shove their tongues down Putlers ears or were ever he chose for it to be placed. Mister President Malcron we are not wanting to attack Ukraine we are just training our 220,000 soldiers near the border for over a year. Why was nothing started to be built in places most likely to be needed and why did my country not respond sooner? America did not respond like it should have all the way back to the invasion of Georgia. We should have given aid and learned that you pay more when you back down to a bully. Putler only responds to physical violence like a bully. You can kill all the mobics you want. It is not hurting him personally. He invaded he is fair game to the articles of war. Putler bombs playgrounds while you hit a spot when 10 soldiers are. They fire to fire and if it hits or kills something great. It is about how much they fired what they fired and whereabouts they fired. Then they make an adjustment and start shelling again after being loaded. America had to get more of that aid that is greatly tested to Ukraine while our new current ones get upgraded or new altogether. NATO should take up positions on the border of Belarus to free up the Ukraine military and get rotations out. You tend not to mention that Ukraine did not build much infrastructure got complacent and depended on a strategy you were not going all in on. The offensive should have been stopped in two or even down to 1 area of attack. A lot of life equipment was lost after that. And then 1 1/2 years into the war they decide maybe its a good idea to build stuff to try to hold it. That is a total face palm moment people. A toddler playing army could see that attack and outcome a mile away and not being able to stop salients is something I had not considered a hard nut to crack. Only point I am making is America is donating and Europe needs to understand one thing. If we get stuck with a president who is as nuts or coochoo as trump or something like it. Europe could be on its own because they chose to be Isolationists. I hope that never happens I hope were evolved enough to know that everything that affects you affects us and so on. I always said if the European states all came together That would be an amazingly rich culture diversity and homeland to all. One system like a roundtable. No one of lesser or greater importance. That really would be Europe's solution. I hope America donates all we can hell get mechanics back in the service to refab the equipment sitting out in the desert for 50 years or so. Just my two cents and may Ukraine win because if they do not there is no Ukraine. Slavia Ukraine.

Very good perspective, thank you. Corruption is not a bug in Moscow's system, it is a feature.

Perhaps you will one day write a piece in the NYT about the impending extent of the Ukrainian genocide in comparison with other genocides.

Didn’t know about your recent adversary laws; excellent. Germany just uncovered a Ru team in Germany specifically trained for assassinations.

This is what could make reform possible in Russia: Envision a revolutionary electoral system called Proxy Democracy. In this system, political parties are absent, and all candidates run as independents. Each voter receives a number of votes equal to the number of candidates and all the candidates get elected, ensuring that everyone's voice is heard. Elections take place yearly and ideally align globally to encourage collaboration. Participating nations cooperate closely, nearly forming a unified governing entity while maintaining their sovereignty. This innovative approach could transform societies like Israel, the US, the UK, and many European countries, where the current "democracy" often masks plutocratic governance. With Proxy Democracy, we could see an end to conflict as everyone's voice would be heard and valued. While not flawless, it would significantly improve upon our current democratic systems.

What about activity behind the scenes? Who will decide which people can stand? How would decisions ever be made?
@robertcircleone4 ай бұрын
@@SarahMould Thank you for your question. While this is still a work in progress I have a strong feeling that people won't be fighting each other to serve. There might be too few or too many candidates in any given constituency in any particular year but I think these things can be accommodated. Essentially, anyone can stand in any slot but not necessarily in their chosen constituency. In the 2019 general election in the UK, 5.1 candidates on average stood for election per constituency. I think we can count on double that since two things put the average person off from standing, the cost and the slim chance of winning. Decisions will be made by the delegates, the proxies voting with the votes allocated to them by the voters. Deciding on the slots might be a challenge. Right left and centre doesn't quite cut it. Power needs to be spread thinly to avoid a new elite forming. Ten or more distinct slots might be required. What we have at present is not fit for purpose. It isn't democracy. except in name. we need real democracy that cannot descend into autocracy. Make autocrats history.

Well done. Makes sense. Very insightful into Putins war machine, in particular to me, how it's partly funded.

Regarding the Crimean Tatars, is it true that they have again been deported? Isn't it just that after the WWII deportations, replacement Slavic populations came in. And even when many of the Crimean Tatars returned (starting in the 1950s), many did not, and thus the percentage of Tatars in Crimea was greatly reduced. Has there been Crimean Tatar deportation since 2014? I'm sure many fled because they did not want to live under Russia or in a war zone, but that is not a Stalinist deportation.
