Peace Conference, June 2024. "And despite some of us around this table having different opinions on how to exactly get to peace for Ukraine, let there be no mistake... we are totally united at a shared vision on principles, on values, on decency. You do not invade another country. You do not abduct children. You do not play politics with the world's food supply. And you do not endanger nuclear safety." Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte:

If I remember correctly, Nabulina tried to resign at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, but Putin wouldn't accept her resignation. I also feel as if I heard something like that; unfortunately I don't remember when and where it was, i.e. the source of this information. But let's assume it's true. Then I personally think it's actually possible that she's caught in some kind of trap. As far as I know, "important" people can't get out of Russia so easily anymore. It doesn't even have to be a direct compulsion. It's enough if one of Putin's criminal gang says with the grin of a shark: "Dear Nabulina, you have a husband/children/family members, just think about them..." That's enough, unfortunately.

How come Russia is consistently advancing and their troop numbers keep increasing? How come he is only using about 20% of his available military and on the off chance things turn around, do you think he will not use nukes on Ukraine, a non NATO country? If he does, do you seriously believe that western countries will trigger certain nuclear war and an apocalypse just to save an imaginary line where at least 60% of people want to be part of Russia anyway? The west is sending Ukrainian men to certain death to dull Russian power, they could not care less about the death toll and destruction of a country most would be unable to point to in a map. I have to come to KZbin to get information on Ukraine because it just never makes the news here at all. That is how much the west cares.

When the Putin regime is gone, Europe will help Russia, but not with the same naiv eyes like last time. It depends also on the Russian people and if they want any help. Because they must be prepared to pay most of their wealth for building up the damage they have done to the Ukrainian. That can be a tricky ultimatum for Russian leaders and a lot of its peoples mentality.

GDP only measures economic activity. It doesn't distinguish between wealth-building activity and wasteful activity. Unfortunately, this is not appreciated by those people who point to Russia's reported GDP as evidence that the sanctions haven't worked.

The real point of sanctions is not instantaneous. They work over time by depressing growth. Meanwhile, their adversaries are growing by half to even an order of magnitude greater then the sancioned country. Imagine hoe bad things are in Iran and Vnezuela, or even Cuba, who have been under sanctions for decades.

Russia may end up like North Korea. DPRK was richer from 1950s through 1980s than South Korea. It descended into poverty after loss of USSR and change in world trade after 1990s. Sanctions don’t bring an economy down, but keep it from continuously growing.

Since the injured are fighting age men (so still fairly young), it's going to be their mother's mostly. Some lucky ones might have wives, that stand by them. But not every soldier is married to begin with and if you add PTSD and alcoholism and such to the mix, I'd agree, that many of the wives won't take that for long. I mean, let's face it... it's not just dealing with suddenly having a husband unable to earn a living anymore. Those guys have been through hell and will probably have no access to mental health support afterwards. A lot of them will end up as (prescription) drug or alcohol addicts and more often than not violent. Keep that in mind before you blame the women for absconding. It's an all around shit show and the generational harm will be crushing.

I was an engineer working in Eastern Europe in the final years before the UUSR broke apart. I got a look behind the curtain that was uncommon in those days. Normal visitors were not shown the real world, they were carefully managed. I spent a lot of time free to go where I wanted and got to mingle with regular people. Best example of this was in East Germany. We were a team of foreign specialists building a honey packaging line. We had our meals in the factory, in a separate dining room. The rest of the factory had their meals in a mess hall. Kitchen in between. There was a strictly enforced rule that doors had to be opened and closed in such a way that no one ever could see what 'the other side' was eating. Just to make sure the Germans could not see the feast we got every day, nor could we see the poor fare they got. We also got a stack of spending money and a driver/guide to show us all the really fancy places to spend it. And we got to see stores full with western luxury goods. The secret to that I learned by accident in Bulgaria. Russians going in a rather empty bus to Istanbul to stock up on as many goods as they could fit on that bus. That was for the slowly starting private economy. But all it takes to prepare a store is a van and a stack of dollars. Like then, like now. That Tucker Carson trip? Stage managed. That store was just like back in the day. No tourists walking freely where they want but only where their guide brings them, to a well prepared site. Language is the big helper. The alphabet is very unfamiliar so managing without guide/translator/driver is not evident. And going undercover in a country at war is dangerous. So you go where they want you to go and see what they want you to see. And they get two for the price of one. Show a store full with 'sanctioned' goods from companies that left russia and claim that they never left. And Konstantin is one of the few on KZbin who is wise to that.

To spell it out, all of those industries now fulfilling contracts to build weapons for the state, will not be able to revert back to their old business after the war because they will have nothing in the order books, and their regular customers will have migrated elsewhere.
