"What is Truth? We both have Truths, are yours the same as mine?" One of the greatest lines ever written!

Truth depends on the society you're in!

@@nancyayers6355 Well, maybe. If you allow others to define your "truths" for you, then yes. I prefer to decide my own truths. As they say in the legal profession, "everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but no one is entitled to their own set of facts". Your opinions are your truths, and hopefully they can change if new and better information becomes available.

6:09, when pilate snaps is my favorite part of the entire play. this guy kills it. its the best i've ever heard it sung and best i've ever seen it acted, and i've seen it performed on broadway. f*cking amazing!

I love this version so much. Not only Judas by Drew Sarich is incredible, but this Pilate is just... really good. I never thought his part can be played like that. Very original impression of the character.

Ive always been partial to the original cast, this interpretation is rather good though, it's one of the few that understands keeping a quick musical tempo is essential to this scenes intensity.
@EMc-gx1gc3 жыл бұрын
Wow. This is my first time seeing this performance from this production (I've seen the Drew Sarich performances many many many times).... This was amazing. One of the best Pilate performances I've ever seen. I had chills. The emotion was on point. The beauty of JCS is the duality of the "villains". They're very conflicted. This captures that. Amazing performance.

They always did one less lashing than was sentenced. It was a way to minimize the risk of giving one lash too many, e.g. 41 instead of 40.
@nancyayers63554 жыл бұрын
Interesting!
@johntompkins2 жыл бұрын
Actually, that's not true. The Romans had _no_ limit when it came to scourging. The 'one less' thing was actually a part of Jewish law. That's why 39 lashes are depicted in this show ('forty less one')
@fiamedknuff2 жыл бұрын
@@johntompkins I stand corrected 9 years later. 😆
@gladrial8911 жыл бұрын
It was also thought at that time that forty lashes would kill a man. So Pilate had him whipped just until the point of death.

Furthermore: for comparison, watch the 1973 movie. The people in the mob look like the disciples...they're all just people. And the scene is far more powerful that way, because it shows ordinary people turning against Jesus out of fear rather than cartoony villains turning on him out of evil. Given that the truly revolutionary thing about this play is that it gave the "bad guys" motivations and made them sympathetic, the whole point is that the mob is ordinary.

40 lashes was also traditionally considered a death sentence. Since Pilate was trying not to have to kill Jesus, he assigned one less than the death penalty. Also clever.

@hazzagal the 39 lashes are due to the fact that according to roman law, 40 lashes were considered an execution. 39 lashes was the maximum number permitted without a death sentence.
@smv4usa5 жыл бұрын
I thinks it was more 40 lashes was the most a man could take as punishment before being seriously injured. However, they would only count to 39 so as to not go overboard due to a miscount.

@hazzagal Well, the reason they didn't do 40 was because ( I forget where) in the Bible, 40 lashes could kill a man. I think that means Pilate wanted to give Jesus one more chance to save himself. But that's just my thought.

What the hell is with modern productions of JCS and their costuming of the mobs to look like caricatures of Chassidic Jews? Pretty much every character in the damn play is Jewish, but I don't see any good guys in stereotypical costumes...yet in every post 2000 production I know of, the angry mob has been made to look as "Jewish" as possible! Yeah, the 70's version was corny, but at least it wasn't anti-Semitic. I can't effing BELIEVE this...

Over the past however many years the video has been available its been pretty unanimous that Jesus is the weak link in this show, but let's be honest here for a minute: even the best would look like garbage up against Drew and Rob. And since when have a few anachronisms been unacceptable in a musical? Why is historical accuracy's importance when it's a charicature being created, and not a genuine representation of someone? Especially to nit-pick over something as moronic as clothing? For God's sake, in this particular production, Judas SHOOTS himself.
