Après être retournée rapidement dans sa tente, elle en est ressortie en portant l’un des manteaux en peau de mouton à manches longues que tous les hommes portaient. Tsetan m’a évalué d’un coup d’œil alors que nous grimpions dans sa voiture. « Ah, oui, drokba, monsieur », déclara-t-il. Nous avons pris un raccourci pour sortir du Changtang. Tsetan connaissait un itinéraire qui nous mènerait au sud-ouest, presque directement vers le mont Kailash. Cela impliquait de franchir plusieurs cols de montagne assez élevés, dit-il. « Mais pas de problème, monsieur », nous a-t-il assuré, « s’il n’y a pas de neige. » Quelle était la probabilité de cela, ai-je demandé. « Je ne sais pas, monsieur, jusqu'à ce qu'on y soit. » Depuis les collines doucement ondulantes de Ravu, le raccourci nous a menés à travers d’immenses plaines désertes où il n’y avait rien d’autre que quelques gazelles qui levaient la tête de leur maigre pâturage et fronçaient les sourcils avant de s’éclipser dans le vide. Alors que les collines commençaient à émerger à nouveau de ce désert rocailleux, nous avons croisé des drokbas solitaires gardant leurs troupeaux. Parfois des hommes, parfois des femmes, ces silhouettes bien emmitouflées s’arrêtaient pour observer notre voiture, agitant parfois la main alors que nous passions. Lorsque la piste nous rapprochait de leurs animaux, les moutons prenaient des mesures d’évitement, s’écartant de la route du véhicule rapide. Nous avons passé des tentes sombres de nomades plantées dans une splendide isolation, généralement avec un énorme chien noir, un mâtin tibétain, montant la garde. Ces bêtes inclinaient leurs énormes têtes dès qu'elles percevaient notre approche et nous fixaient du regard. À mesure que nous nous rapprochions, elles se mettaient soudain à bondir, se précipitant directement sur nous comme une balle tirée d’un fusil, presque aussi vite. Ces monstres hirsutes, plus noirs que la nuit la plus sombre, portaient généralement des colliers rouge vif et aboyaient furieusement avec leurs mâchoires massives. Ils ne craignaient absolument pas notre véhicule, fonçant droit sur notre chemin, obligeant Tsetan à freiner et à faire des embardées.
