The Amitabh-Rekha affair was enormous. Rekha was quite forthcoming about it in interviews. Amitabh not so. He never acknowledged it, though Jaya was less secretive. However, both Amitabh and Jaya tried damage control, I think because they had always portrayed themselves as a socially upstanding couple, and scandal wasn't up their alley. But the affair was hugely common knowledge for years. Silsila happened while the affair was still strong. Bringing the three together in a love triangle was Yash Chopra's idea. It was considered quite the casting coup. Jaya was acting after years. She had more or less given up her career after she married Amitabh, who insisted that her post-marriage retirement was her decision alone. But I think we know enough about marital dynamics, where women are almost expected to step back professionally and retire into domesticity. She was considered a truly talented actor, and she gave up her career while it was at its peak. There are interviews of her a few years after her marriage, where she comes across as irritable and frustrated with her life. Her husband was fulfilling his dazzling career, while she had given up hers. And THEN, the affair. So this was years and years of disappointment, embarrassment, and unhappiness for her. When Korbin says that well, they are still married now and happily, I wonder about 'happily'. As far as we can tell, Jaya's life has been one of compromise. So when we look at the adulation with which Amitabh is treated, we should remember Jaya. Amitabh may be a great artiste, but a deeply problematic husband. His wife has been collateral damage.

Yes the affair was going on when the movie was shot. The original cast had other people but when that fell through Yash proposed the current cast to Amitabh. Amitabh agreed but he knew Jaya would not. Yash Chopra was the one who convinced her. Yash Chopra even said in an interview that it was a tense unit at times. Also regarding the confrontation scene, Rekha mentioned in an interview that when her and Big B's affair was at its peak Jaya invited her to dinner. Rekha said all through the dinner Jaya was very pleasant and never once spoke about the affair. However, when Rekha was leaving Jaya told her that Amitabh would never leave her (Jaya) and his kids and she (Rekha) would be left alone.

It's a very good film for Romance month. And yes, the affair was pretty much an open secret across the nation, but Mr. Bachchan denies it to this day. He even did so in the Koffee with Karan episode with SRK where he stressed multiple times on the hope that some day, people would come to see that he "wasn't such a bad person after all". Also, her name is pronounced RAY-kha, not Ree-kha.

Interesting tidbit : Amitabh never spoke (accepted/denied) about their affair. Rekha did on many occasions. Amitabh escaped media heat mostly because leading magazines and newspapers were boycotting him for a while after as he stood in support of Prime minister Indira Gandhi who'd applied emergency in india and had put media censorship. This boycott became a blessing in disguise as it actually saved his reputation. All the magazines wrote were like Rekha was seen with a 'married film star' or 'mystery man' etc 😆

His discipline and respectful nature changed her from a rash, indisciplined young woman to a more balanced one. She changed herself, as She wanted him to have a good impression of her. REKHA was outstanding in the classic 1981 period film “UMRAO JAAN”. The film is a synergy of a great story, music, locations, direction and just Rekha with her brilliant performance, beauty & dances. The film’s remake with Aishwarya Rai that came some decades later was good too but not as good. The director Muzaffar Ali is among the best though he has made only 4 or 5 films but each was classy. I count Umrao Jaan in my list of Top 10 Bollywood films.

Yash chopra admitted that he couldn't believe he managed to cast these 3 in this movie together, because he knew about amitabh and rekha's affair and never thought the 2 women would agree to be a part of this film given how close this hit to home. The original cast was amitabh, parveen babi and smita patil - but yash chopra really wanted rekha and jaya and just assumed it would never happen....until they somehow convinced jaya to come on board. It was a really strange relationship they all shared! Yash chopra literally confirmed that this affair happened in an interview before he died.

If I remember correctly Yash Chopra actually asked all three if they were comfortable being cast in a love triangle with Amitabh at the center of it. Chopra later recalled that all three were game for it and signed Silsila to demonstrate their commitment to their artistry despite sensitive subject and its possibile impact on Amitabh's fan base. It is pretty clear though that Jaya knew that Amit had left that chapter far behind or else she would have never agreed to revisit the subject. And yes, Amitabh and Jaya were married before Silsila was filmed and I don't remember if the purported affair with Rekha had any impact on their marriage. It is important to note that Amitabh and Rekha were cast together in several blockbusters and their fans often mistook them for real couples. However, it is true that Rekha made no bones about loving Amit ji, but he always skirted the subject and more than once described their relations as purely professional.

'SILSILA' is a brilliant movie, and an absolute must watch for several reasons - story, music, cinematography, and performances. Sanjeev Kumar and Shashi Kapoor are in the film in supporting roles, and they give incredible and heartfelt performances. Sanjeev Kumar is also someone you need to explore - he was a great actor of his generation, and has given fantastic performances throughout his career. As for the affair between Amitabh and Rekha. I personally do not believe that to be true. Amitabh and Rekha appeared in many films as a romantic pair, and the audience loved their onscreen chemistry, and soon the tabloid media at the time stirred that gossip pot until they couldn't stir it anymore! There is no way Jaya Bachchan, Amitabh or Rekha would've agreed to act in a film so close to their real lives. I think it was a story that ran its course and tried to cash in on Amitabh's star power at the time. Sadly, this story led Amitabh and Rekha to never work together again until date!

This is an outstanding movie with stellar performances. The original cast was supposed to be Smita Patil (for Jayas role) and Parveen Babi (for Rekha’s role). But last minute Yash Chopra decided to cast Jaya and Rekha and shared this with Big B. Big B convinced Jaya and Yashji convinced Rekha to do the roles. There’s an interview of Yashji with SRK in which he revealed this
