It sort of feels like the Darwyn Cooke art of Marvel, if you will. I've never really read anything with the Allreds, but I like their art a lot (I'm hoping that this omnibus gets reprinted). It reminds me of the work Paolo Rivera did on Waid's Daredevil.

One of my all time favorite characters and one of may all time favorite runs. Silver surfer as a rom com. The final pay off with Dawn is perfect, especially when tied into the essence of who the Surfer character is as a man. Allred's art is an acquired taste. thought it fit the story and tone perfectly.

I just LOVE the work of the Allreds. I understand that's not for everyone, but they consistently make art that is very unique in the comic business. You should really pick up the X-Statix Omnibus if you can.

Absolutely flawless review since I was 12 in 1980 I was poor and Fantasy Masterpieces was my only ticket to the cosmic escape of Silver Surfer. But as a new Gemenite I can’t wait to pull the trigger for less than $200 :-)

I really enjoyed and Dan Slots run on Silver Surfer. view problems I still had a great time with the series. The never Queen was definitely my favorite character that debuted in the series she was really bad ass for me especially how they had to get her heart back. So I would give this run like maybe 7.5 out of 10 as a whole.

Was fun to see this, as I am coincidentally reading it right now. The Allreds' art is certainly an acquired taste, but I do appreciate how much heart this book has. It definitely feels like a sort of 60s sci-fi adventure of the week TV show, and part of the corny humor and story is trying to channel that feel. It was nice to read a cosmic superhero comic that wasn't taking itself so seriously, and as long as you go in not trying to make this story something it's not, I feel it's very enjoyable. As far as other stuff you should read, I'm dying to hear your thoughts on Sleeper. I've said it before, but it's my favorite Brubaker story, and what he does with the Wildstorm universe characters in it is so awesome.

It’s crazy because this is the one time I didn’t take advantage of the under $50 price on in stock trades and this book instantly skyrocketed in price and I can’t really find it anywhere! One of my biggest regrets as of late is not jumping right at the opportunity to purchase this book when it first released!

I’m new to the omni game, so I’m curious as to how this is no longer available anywhere except the secondary market even though it came out less than 2 years ago. This omni is still on my must have list, but I’ll wait until it gets re-released. I’m not spending double MSRP (or more) that it commands on eBay!

Glad you had a good time with it once the story was said and done. I really enjoyed this book. I read the first trade digitally and was also turned off by the art at first. Then I pulled the trigger on the omnibus about 6 months later and was prepared for the Allred art style. I agree that that last arc makes the story really pay off in the end and makes the read worth it. ✌️

I have all the regular issues for this run and I loved it. I love the Allreds art, but I like unique artwork for example Sam Kieth and Mike Mignola are 2 other artists I really dig. I also enjoyed the story for the most part it was silly and made me laugh a lot. That ending got me too. I would recommend this to anyone who wanted to check out a Silver Surfer run. And if you do like Mike Allreds art check out X-Statix, Madman and iZombie.

Wow, you are simply amazing with how you review things! Really appreciate the honest review. The bookmarks rock! I personally love the art and the way I see it is Allred has his own unique style and although it doesn't necessarily work with the classic look of many Marvel characters, that's the charm of it. It's like when Mignola, Matt Wagner, Sienkewicz, etc, do their take on established characters you are seeing how the characters fit with their unique look; this is compared with Byrne, Perez, Romita Jr, Buscema, Jim Lee, Cassaday, etc - all amazing masters but had a way to emulate the similar riffs of key characters - I think in the Silver & first half the Bronze Age, the branding of characters was a priority of Marvel so hence we get a "in-house style" of the characters. One thing I would have loved for you to have commented on was the double page spread in this omnibus where the Silver Surfer is on a continuous moebius strip. What did you think of that?

I love the Allred artwork. The story had some lovely tales and I had bought a number of the comics beforehand. I agree, it was cringeworthy in places. I think this was a classic run of comics and was an instant purchase as soon as it came out. Who wouldn't want to explore the universe with the Silver Surfer, I would be on that board in an instant.

If you’re looking to read some more manga, I’d recommend monster and Vinland saga. Monster is like a drama, mystery, thriller, while Vinland saga is More of an action/philosophical book set in the time of the Vikings.

Thank you for the great review. I like how you went through the whole book and highlight some of the art and stuff. I think Michael Allred is an acquired taste; it's not for everyone. But I don't think it is correct to say his art lacks details. But he doesn't do excess shadow or crosshatching like many artist today. His art is defnitely inspired by Jack Kirby. And in some way, every similar to Steve Rude. They both have a love of campiness. I loved his Madman comics back in the day. But I am also not big on his creature and alien stuff. But on a whole, I accept and love his art in spite of these minor stuff. And like you, I am not big on the Silver Surfer and Galatus eyes. Too cartoony or souless. Or maybe they are expressive. I have to see if it works in the comics. Thanks for the great review.
