Hello, Silver Wolves! Today, we are going to talk about dealing with a disability. As we get older, we may face different challenges. For one of my followers, it is an old back injury that makes simple things hard to do. In this video, I will answer his question and hopefully give some tips on how to overcome his disability. Thank you for watching. Safe journeys.

Determination makes a huge difference. As a child I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle. It broke my legs, my arm, and my back. I was 10 years old. I was on crutches when I joined Boy Scouts of America. I completed the 50 mile hike with crutches. I couldn’t bend over to pick up something off the ground. Getting up was difficult, but I found a way to make it easier. I built my own fires, cooked my own food, set up my own tent. Cleaned up my messes. At 47 my body is reminding me about those injuries.

May I suggest one of those long handled gripper things that you use to grab hold of things out of your reach? Be good for picking up lighter weight wood off the ground that you can't bend over to pick up. Some have locking handles therefore you can bring that wood to where you can reach it and put it in a bag you carry over your shoulder. Worth a try!

GREAT video Blackie! As a 72 year old with severe back issues, I suggest seeing a physical therapist I am not saying you have not seen one but just saying I found them worthwhile and well worth my time and money. Something to think about lifting is don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't worry about setting your pride aside. We are silver wolves and have earned the right. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Don't forget those grabber sticks, they use to pick up stuff off the ground or to get stuff off of the shelf. He could use it to pick up firewood, sticks, etc... right off the ground while sitting.

A lot of campsites have those standing bbq’s - the steel box with a steel grate on a steel post that stand about 3 feet off the ground - You can fold back the grate and set your trangia (or whatever) in the box to cook on, or throw your firelog on it and enjoy a campfire without bending over.

I use a shovel to move things around in the fire - mine's about 3ft long, which is enough to get some distance from the fire, and good if bending a bit is OK, but if not, a longer-handled shovel will work. Makes it easier to move logs and coals around, to re-stoke the fire, and is surprisingly maneuverable.

Lived with CP, walked on crutches all my life. My brother and I spent our young lives in the woods every summer. So for most of my life, I had this nailed down due to just dirt time. Now I'm older, (insert problems😂) and yes I can split you out a fire hearth for a bow drill, spindle and all, but they ain't no getting into "the position" ...solution? An 18 volt drill.😂 I know its "cheating" but hey if that's all you have to start a fire? USE IT. I generally prefer a small table or even the "cutting board " idea for Ferro rods etc. Put it across the arm rests on my chair or somewhere safe. But that getting up and down, yeah I hear ya brother. Thank all of you for your service to our nation. You took my place and served when I could not. You will not be forgotten. Much love...

Use fireplace tools to work the fire. Tongs, and poker would work great. Maybe use long fireplace matches. Appreciate your efforts and concern to help those less able to still maintain their dignity and purpose to raise our next generation. We need Silver Wolf patches! lol

Well done Blackie. I am 70 now, at 10 years old my best friend and I were playing with gasoline i.e. putting it in a windex bottle to make a flame thrower. No we didn't have the adjustable sprayers then it made a small cloud of fire with a wooden kitchen match. We were filling the bottle in a carport storage room, got the 5 gallon steel has can capped and set on a metan mil surp box, before the fumes got to the pilot light of the gas water heater,both of my legs were burned full thickness, my ankles had to be rasped down past the burned and dead bone before being grafted. Was listed as terminal dad a Lt Col. USAF. read my chart and notes. He had me moved to the Shriners burn hospital that was in Galveston. I had to learn to walk again and have had to learn ways to anything i wanted to do. I still have issues woth my feet. There was nothing i didn't do except play sports in highschool. I never thought of my self handicapped. Canoeing, hikeing, camping, hunting, whatever i wanted to do. In 2011, i finally had to claim disability. I can't ealk very far or a long time. I just had to rethink how to do most things. Never let a handicapp stop you from enjoying life. My parents taught me to think, adapt, overcome, improvise, and to never give up or stop trying. I know this is very long, but we can do most anything we put our mind too. I try and teach anyone to believe in your self, go do it and enjoy every moment. Many will never have a chance to do that, do it for them. My IFAC is taylored to me and my needs plus general first aid. Thanks again Blackie for this video i am sure many will benefit from it

I keep tellin my dad, for years now, "Always another way." He wasn't walking 3 years ago. Last year he was not only walking, but training horses... Too many as it turns out. He had a 5 way by pass. Getting a pacemaker tomorrow cause he pushed it too far too fast. Lol i tried to tell him. He's been laid up 7 years... He'll get it back, just gonna take time. 100% disabled trucker at 56. Hes 63 now. My next load is my last. We got way too many critters and i cant in good conscience let others pick up his slack.

Excellent suggestions and a can do philosophy. I had an uncle who broke his back falling out of a tree. He learned how to drive a car with hand controls, went to college to become a draftsman ( a desk job ) and was very independent. I remember how he was always trying different things to do “ normal” tasks. He lived into his nineties and spent over sixty years of his life in a wheelchair. Excellent video. I love and enjoy all your videos.

Most any place which sells rebar should carry "L" bars, which are indeed shaped like an L. These should make decent firepokers right off the shelf, but some folks may find the short side too long. It can be cut with a hacksaw, but a power tool with the proper blade type is a LOT faster. I know the Lowes and Home Depot in my area sell them, but if not, find the nearest place who sells rebar online. You may just be able to get a local contractor to give you one left over from a job.

Excellent thoughts. If your upper body has the strength you can use a grabber reach tool. It will take some practice. They make them with metal jaws. The ones for trash are longer than the ones for indoor use. Your chair is important. You don't want you six below your knees. I get old folding metal chairs that had the nylon straps wove for the seat and back. Change them for old seatbelts out of a car. They are sturdy and long lasting. I still have my first one that sits outside from May til October. I have made fire pokers for people out of rebar but check around little antique stores and flea markets and you can find old ones from wood and coal furnaces. I have long enough to use as a cane and you could put the hurt on someone bothering you. If cooking on a picknic table top is to tall set the stove on the bench as it will lower it a lot. You will get a lot of joy out of coming up with ways to do things to suit you.

When my nephew was a little kid we built a fire lay and I poured some heet fuel on it and had him strike a ferro rod to ignite the fire. You can’t get to close to the fire pit cause it ignites with gusto. But it’s a quick way to get the fire going.

good tips! i like to have multi purpose stuff to keep my kit lighter and more condensed, so I'm wondering if it would be feasible to put a hook on a walking stick (perhaps with something on the fire end to protect the stick) to act as a fire poker rather than having a solid piece of rebar. if you added some screw eyes and rope to it (like a fishing pole), you could possibly also use it to loop around and pull things off the ground, like firewood that's about as big as the eco-log. it would be good to have some kind of walking stabilization anyway, as it would take some pressure off the injury. something else you could do for cooking on a campfire is bring a tripod. I've seen several that should be plenty tall enough to comfortably set up and reach while sitting next to a fire. great for making campfire soups and boiling water. depending on your setup and injury, it could be quite useful to keep some pulleys on hand to assist with getting up, hoisting bear canisters, and other such tasks. pulleys in particular, since more pulleys the rope goes through, the less force you have to exert. especially good for strength or joint disabilities. there's really quite a lot you can do with some well placed leverage. my main problem with roughing it is that i have a bad knee (along with some mild general joint issues), so a nice sturdy stick and knowing when when to take it easy would go the furthest in my case. perhaps something i can sit on when i need to go in the bushes. in that case, it would be fairly easy to bring a collapsible toilet seat or make a rope sling for tension against a tree while i do my business. I've never personally used a sling, but the videos I've seen are interesting and I'm certainly willing to give it a try.

Depending on the ability to squat, I not only use a chair like you are sitting in, but I also have a pair of folding stools from Amazon that can hold 400lbs. They work as foot stools and allow me to get low to work with stuff on the ground. One of the extended grabber things can be useful as well. Work with what you have.

Hey Blackie, with winter temps firmly upon us, how would you create a micro climate setup with a fire and wool blanket?
@blackoracle69
@blackoracle69 7 ай бұрын
the key is to find a place out of the wind then a good supply of firewood and water lastly a big tree or dirt bank to use and a heat trap / reflector. create a long fire maybe 4 feet wide a Siberian log fire would serve well for this. next add a thick layer on the ground of dry leaves / straw/ debris as an insulator of ground contact. then all that's left is to get the fire going drag plenty of wood in pile up debris to act as a wind brake should you feel cold air from someplace and wrap up in blanket and sleep a few hours till fire burns low.. then rise re stoke fire heat water is possible to drink to keep core temp up. it will be a long had night but this is how i would do it.
