Installing some cheaper headers that I got from Ebay. They seem to fit pretty good. Not sure why the truck was surging on the first start. Maybe not having the bad exhaust leak the computer doesn't know how to compensate yet.

The main reason these exhaust manifold bolts break is the cast manifolds heat up at a different rate than the grade 6 or 8 bolts GM used to hold them down into the aluminum heads, three different types of metals expanding and contracting over and over again, and the one with the most stress looses, THE BOLTS.

Friend of mine had the same problem when he got headers.. We replaced spark plugs and wires and it ran great, no more problems and then needed o2 sensors. Seems like the headers man the combustion hot and burn the plugs. New plugs can run at higher temps, also try some 93 octane, seemed to really help it. Good luck man!

I think the bolts break off from repeated heating and cooling, which is called annealing. Over time They get so soft that when the exhaust heats up and expands, those bolts just snap right off. I'm crying to myself right now, I have three on the drivers side that are broken inside the threads, and of course one of those is the one right by the firewall.

Hi Mossman, Ive got the GMC 2500HD in 6.0 and want to do the same thing....got three header bolt broken in the factor headers and got to do the removal thing....groan, Question: did those headers ever throw a code? Some fellow on KZbin had some long headers and had to go the a dyno shop to have some delete work done. But you didnt have any problems afterwards?
@mossman381
@mossman381 7 жыл бұрын
When it's really cold the truck has a little trouble running but I think it's because I have the wrong gap on the spark plugs. It had a few fault codes when I bought it. Other than that the truck runs great with the headers. I think I can feel a little more power. These headers have the EGR port in them. You can get headers without that. Then you would have to have that deleted.

@mossman381
@mossman381 7 жыл бұрын
I don't really know the hours but time will vary depending on how many manifold bolts you have broken and how fast you can get them out. My drivers side all the bolts come out and had no broken ones. The passenger side had 3 broken bolts and took awhile to get them out. Having to do it with the fenders in place will probably slow you down a lot. More so on the drivers side.

What technique did.younise.for.the bolt closest to the firewall on the driver side? Do you recommend header wrap after running this setup for a while. Did you notice it produced any more heat than stock? Thank you very much for this video. Thinking about tackling this one myself. Might as well upgrade to the nice looking headers. 🤷 Did you notice any power increase with the headers?
@mossman381
@mossman381 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean by technique. I have many wrenches and probably used a combination of them to get to the hard to reach bolts. I wouldn't wrap them. Didn't notice anything melting from extra heat. I actually think I did notice a little power increase. They did turn colors after being used for a few years. Not something I would recommend for a show vehicle. The hard part was getting the old exhaust manifolds out. I have a video on that as well.

Nice job. I have a 2003 silverado 4.8l with 88k miles and if the truck sits for more than a 10-15 minutes, it turns over for a few seconds before it actually starts. If you turn the key to the on position for a few seconds, turn it off and then try to start it, it starts fine. I replaced to fuel pump relay, fuel filter and cleaned the mass air flow sensor. I read online where people say it could be the starter, fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump but I'm not sure what to check. Have you had any experience with this?

Yeah, I don't want to go throwing expensive parts at it and it not fix it. Especially don't want to pay $300 for a fuel pump and it not fix .

I haven't had that problem but the fuel pressure regulator is pretty easy to change and might be worth a try.
@bdtaylor1979

I thought about that. The fuel pump sounds fine when you turn the key on and doesn't make any weird noises or anything.

@@mossman381 - OK thanks for the reply. Just making sure I wasn't missing something on my 3500 van. I just put a Dorman #917107 manifold repair clamp kit on my 6.0 driver's side rear # 7 cylinder. I discovered the broken bolt recently as I've been throwing various parts at it since 11-06-20. My alternator really did burn up and cook my battery and when I finally got it running again the MIL was on with PO300. I thought it would relearn itself and finally found this big exhaust leak which I hope is causing the lean condition followed by the PCM adding fuel to a certain threshold then throwing the code and into limp. I can't believe GM used those tiny M8 bolts while at the same time drilling and tapping bigger holes for the repair clamps to mount!

Never checked fuel mileage. I lifted this truck 6" and put 35" tires on it so fuel mileage wasn't a concern for me. Making the engine more efficient should help fuel economy.

They are 8mm x 1.25 so in theory the biggest drill bit you can use is 6.75mm without damaging the female threads, and that is assuming you are perfectly centred....

Yes, GM bolts will work but not sure they have stainless. The flange on the stainless header might be a little thicker than the original GM exhaust manifold. Factory bolts should be long enough.

Is that your power steering pump wining. You may want to replace it while you have it torn down so much. It should be easier. and Keep a eye on your frame. near the coil mounts for cracking once it starts it will go quickly.
@mossman381
@mossman381 7 жыл бұрын
The power steering has a leak so I am guessing the previous owner let it run dry. Pretty sure the pump needs to be replaced. This truck has torsion bars. It's a 4x4.

Shorty headers aren't a cost effective upgrade. Dyno results have shown they might give you 5hp over stock manifolds. The real gain come with long tube headers and better cylinder scavaging.

Can't really say much bad about these headers. They are a lot better than I thought and are holding up just fine. They have been on the truck since this video. They are changing color but these aren't show car headers. I would buy them again and recommend them. If I was going to do this over again I would get a good set of header bolts and gaskets.
