I have a 2012 1500 LT 4x4. I hate the variable cylinder crap. I don’t drive in the city much but every time I let off the gas even on the highway it goes through the variable cylinder crap. We towed a trailer that weighed about 6000 lbs from NH to AK when it was a year old. It only has 46,000 miles and we drive it less than 3,000 miles a year now. I.d have to live to be over 100 to get to 150,000 miles so I guess I’ll keep it.

No where is like it used to be. I remember 40 years ago having a few vehicles and I just kept the keys in them in the yard and never locked the house. I consistently get 22, 23 MPG at 70 MPH, with cylinder deactivation functioning frequently as I go up/down hills. I fully change ATF once a year. (6 speed tranny) Change oil/filter every 5,000 miles or so using hi grade synthetic oil. Replaced my first set of stock Goodyear tires at 105,000 miles. 2nd set of Michelens looks like they will go 100,000 + as well. Couldn't be more pleased.

@@nwabuezeozuzu6370 It does additional damage to engine. Every time the engine shuts off and turns on causes additional engine wear.......all just for saving minimal amounts of fuel. If thats not enough the constant shut off and on of the engine is terribly annoying.........but thats my pers opinion. Scotty did a video on why auto start/stop is bad for your engine as well. May not notice anything the first few years of ownership, but if you want long term ownership, you should prob have that feature disabled. @1VaDude
@1VaDude 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffduncan9140 -- Yes. All 7th Generation Corvettes have it (2014 to 2019). With a manual transmission, it only goes into four-cylinder mode when you have the car set to "ECO" mode. In automatic Corvettes, the engine will drop down into "V4" mode whenever it wants to do so. Plugging in the Range AFM device prevents this from happening. Going into V4 mode only saves about 1 mile per gallon, so it is not worth it to potentially damage your engine to save a few pints of fuel on a long trip.

Hello Scotty! I bought a Chev Avalanche new in 2011. At first I was amused by the AFM system but just after a few days it really became annoying. The jitter from 4 to 8 cylinders quickly became a thorn in my side. I then realized that driving the truck in Manual Mode and keeping the transmission in 5th gear (not selecting 6th), AFM would not engage. Therefore I have been using the truck like that ever since. The difference in RPM at highway speeds is about 300-500 RPM's higher from using 5th instead of 6th. So far so good as I really believe the extra RPM's shouldn't do any real harm. Anyhow, love your channel and keep up the great work. Blessings and Cheers!

The L83 engine you’re talking about is actually a pretty good engine, all things considered. It’s a pushrod engine based on a proven design. The AFM on 2014-2018 engines is V8 or V4 (no V6). Yes the lifters can fail, but this is completely attributable to poor oil and long oil change intervals. This generation has been on the market for 10 years; frequent oil changes with quality synthetic oil is the key. As for the transmission, the 6 speed is pretty good, just keep up with flushes of the torque converter per the maintenance schedule. Yes, the 8 speed is very problematic; it requires frequent flushes with updated fluid and usually also at least one rebuild of the transmission. We own two the these, both with the 6 speed transmission. One has 350,000 km, the other has 210,000 km. Not a single issue and they’ve only ever had regular oil, filter, and fluid changes. Yes they’ve got their issues, but I’d take a GM anyday over a whimpy Ford, or a Ram death wobble, or a guzzling Tundra with crap payload…

It's kind of annoying actually.

And here's a tip in case you didn't know... to clear hazed plastic vehicle headlamp covers, try Mother's Mag Polish. Yep, the stuff used on aluminum. I had some minor hazing on my Frontier plastic headlamps, and just a few minutes hand-rubbing with that stuff and they now look almost factory-new... it's amazing! Works great and all you have to do is pull it out of ODB port and it is stock again with no record on computer that you used the deactivation device. This makes transmission shift better because when it goes into v4 mode the transmission is shifting also and hunting for gears. Mine runs great and smoothly. Also I like the way it runs when in trailer mode. It holds lower gears longer and doesn’t shift as much.

The 2004-07 Honda Accord hybrid has the same concept, the v6 has a 'hybrid mode' where half the cylinders deactivate, very useful on the highway where you're at a consistent speed most the time but when you're at a stop light or city driving, hybrid mode turns on and for whatever reason you decide to floor it, pray your spark plugs don't fall threw. Would've been my favorite hybrid only if there wasn't huge cables all over the engine bay, making it almost impossible to change spark plugs on the inside cylinders, and if there was also a button to turn hybrid mode on and off. Wouldve been the best but no.
