Very cool Lady… I subscribed to your site in less than ten minutes! I am not sorry that I did, and after years and years of experiences with FB, yours is the first that I have ever subscribed to! You are enjoyable to watch/listen to, and your podcasts (right word?) are well said, matched with my level of ‘expertise’, and your teaching pretty much rings true to my experiences. As we say back home, thank you very large!

I can't wait to see more videos from you! I'm a beginning silversmith myself and you are inspiring me to keep making things! You mentioned Rio Grande as a supplier and I use them frequently. Who is the other supplier you mentioned for the sheet metal that measures in metric?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing6 жыл бұрын
Hi John! :) I'm really happy you feel this way! I'm self taught myself and it's all about being consistent and persistent and keep making and learning :) I mentioned Cooksongold, it's a supplier here in the United Kingdom but Rio Grande has bigger offer, so good for you you can buy from them! Good luck with your craft :)

I see that for 16-18 gauge you would need a size 2 blade? Thats so far from 8/0! What is the finest blade you'd recommend for copper sheet thickness of 1.2mm/17 ish gauge? I am trying to figure out what to buy so that I can saw at home for now while I wait to go back to class at some point!

Hello from Huddersfield in Yorkshire, i am just starting on my journey in to silver jewellery making. Please could you recommend a good first project for someone like me to begin with, thank you so much, it was me who mentioned that i had bought the book you had recommended. Thank you once again. Peace.

Hi Andy! :) Yes, I know it's you, I'm so happy that you're here in our little creative community :)) I would definitely recommend doing an easy ring, without a bazel. Maybe a hammered ring, so you can practice measuring, cutting, soldering, filing, cleaning, hammering, polishing etc. You could also make a simple pendant - saw the shape out of a silver, file the edges, solder a little jump ring on top to put it on a chain. And then try wit simple bazel. This is actually a really god video idea, a starter project :) I might make one very soon, thank you!
@andypandy68306 жыл бұрын
Ooh yes please, a starter project of a pendant would be fantastic. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. I have so much to learn and need all the help i can get. I just hope you do not get fed up of me asking lots of questions. Take care.

Hello again lovely Basia 😊 I have another question 😊 while i'm filing with my big size vallorbe G2, it make a horrible sound and its very difficult, it get stuck on the piece, almost impossible to file with it so i use the sanding paper, not sure if its.the right thing to do... can you please help me to understand what im doing wrong? (curently using on a 1mm brass with 0/3 saw blandes)
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Жыл бұрын
It happens to me too sometimes, I think it's just a direction? It catches on the parts of the metal. Usually gets better once you've filed down those sharp edges. If, however, there is a particular reason for this, then I'm sorry, because I don't know it. I encourage someone who might know to let us in the comment! :)

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thank you for your answear :) so there was a little mistake in my message i use a GO size so its sharper and my friend has a G2 and it does not make this sound or a least not that much, so i think it might be when the file to "low" not to sure how to call that. Have a good day :)

Hej Basiu. (UK).
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
W UK rejestracja z Assay Office i nabijania próby jest wymagana jeśli waga Twojego wyrobu ze srebra przekracza konkretna wagę: "1 gram for gold, 7.78 grams for silver, 0.5 grams for platinum and 1 gram for palladium". Natomiast możesz to zrobić z własnej woli, jeśli chcesz, aby wszystkie Twoje produkty miały próbę :) Mam nadzieję, że to troszkę pomoże, powodzenia! 😊

Is it better to saw metal sheets than to use shears? I want to cut pretty basic shapes and shearing seems to be so much quicker than sawing - anyway quality is more important to me than quantity...
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you are cutting. Shears (hand ones) will bend the metal and cause you a looot of exra work afterwads (unnecessary flattening, sadning, cleaning). And it's extremely hard to use with thicker sheet. It's also more dangerous, becasue the edges become very sharp. The saw is the way to cut the shapes out of the metal sheet and it's great to learn sawing skills. It's really not difficult! 😃
@1827handmade4 жыл бұрын
On the charts it says that blades 1/0 through to 5/0 can be used for 0.6mm/22 gauge metal sheets. Which would you recommend for 22 gauge? I feel super annoying I just don't know where to find specific answers like this, ideally I'd just buy all the metal and all the saw blades and see what works best for me but that would be ultra expensive!
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing4 жыл бұрын
I use only 6/0 and 8/0 blades. I tried 2/0 in the past but it was too rough for me personally, so now I use 6/0 regardless the thickness. I Can definitely recommend this one. 5/0 or 6/0

Do you need a mask to saw? If so what type is good?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I'd say it's a good habit to wear one - there's still silver dust flying around that you breathe in, so a regular, simple but thick cotton mask would be great, or something more protective 😀
