In this quick tip I explain how to use the new AOV / Multipass system in Octane 2021 and the new custom object mattes. As always I hope you like it.

Welcome back Raphael and thanks for sharing your insight into AOVs. To be honest I have not yet used them as my last contracts all demanded either final images out of camera or minimal post production.

great tut here! I have lots of questions about how to set up shadwo catchers ... could you make another vid about that? that'd be AMAZIN!!

Hi Till. Thanks for your comment and suggestion. I actually don´t use shadow catchers 😇 What I usually do is working with render layers and use compositing to do get the shadows in. Maybe this is something for a future tut.

Is it possible to also separate out post processing fx specifically chromatic aberration with alpha?
@SilverwingVFX9 ай бұрын
Hey there and thank you very much for your comment and your patience waiting for my answer. It is possible to separate out post effects. Unfortunately Chromatic Aberration is one of the things that does not work as a post pass due to the shifting in pixels that is happening. So while stuff like glow and glints are usually overlayed and added to the image chromatic aberration alters the pixels of the original render. Hope this is understandable. If you have follow up questions, feel free to ask!

I don't understand what you're meant to do with a white pass that covers the reflection? How do you then composite a reflection that's for example red with that?
@SilverwingVFX2 жыл бұрын
It just means that you have the main matte and also the reflection/refraction of that matte. Mattes are usually there for small corrections make something a little bit brighter, correct the color slightly ect. Maybe reflections are not that important but imagine a cherry in a cocktail glass and you want a matte for it. No chance with regular mattes because they would be hidden by the fluid / glass. So you can use refraction to make the matte show through.

@@SilverwingVFX How do you get a shadow AOV with emissive materials? Having a headache figuring this out. The shadows just blow up on the entire surface. Also how to do get a cryptomatte of an actual object with tons of other objects inside it. They all come out as hundreds of different colours. The documentation is abysmal on this, really struggling.
@SilverwingVFX2 жыл бұрын
@@StylishGaz To help you, I would need to know what you are trying to achieve. using the Shadow AOV About Cryptomattes. You can use the material node name to get all different materials. That usually works. You can also use octane Object Tags and name them differently. Each different Name then will become its own Cryptomatte inside the Object Node Name pass. So just create a Octane Object Tag and rename the standard name "Octane ObjectTag" to e.g. 01, 02, 03 etc. Every distinct name will create its own Crypto Matte. Same names will be combined into one crypto matte.

4:28 if values between black and white are also included you could create subselections within an AOV RGB channel. Also things like hardwood floors built with a cloner could receive different strengths of AOV masks on a per object basis but still only take one chanel :)

Hi Raphael, danke für das Tutorial. Ich versuche einen AOV (Irradiance) als Maske in einem Material zu verwenden, kriege das aber nicht hin. Hast du da einen Tipp?
@SilverwingVFX2 жыл бұрын
Hi, kannst Du evtl genauer beschreiben, was du vor hast.
@monkey2802 жыл бұрын

Hi, thank you for the tip! I'm wondering if there's a reason to use layer IDs instead of Cryptomattes: smaller file size? Faster when used in Ae?

To my knowledge Cryptomatte does not support Reflections / Refractions. Also its always good to offer more flexibility :-)

@@SilverwingVFX one thing that i noticed at this new AOV system is that have no option to output the denoised beauty, and i cant find the way to do it. Do you know how to?
@SilverwingVFX3 жыл бұрын
@@MarcusRizzo You are right. It seems like the easy option to save both the beauty aswell as a denoised bauty is gone (hopefully only for now) You could use the comp feature in Octane 2021 to assemble all the denoise passed to get a denoised beauty output. I will speak to the Developer about it.

I can see the render layers in the IPR but when I send it to the picture viewer they are all black, do you have any idea why this is happening?
@SilverwingVFX2 жыл бұрын
If you are rendering EXRs you need to use the Extractor effect on them in After Effects. Not sure why this is the way it is, but that will make them show up. If you are rendering PNGs you might need to save through the octane saving dialog. Hope that helps

It,s a current bug in the way Octane packages these channels. You could get them to display with the extractor effect.

I remember the legacy layer masks having problems with DoF and MB... di they fix it with this AOV System or is cryptomatte still the way to go? Oh and btw, good to see you back... love your calm thoughtfull way of teaching stuff. Still hoping for a in depth master class from you. :D
@SilverwingVFX3 жыл бұрын
The Custom AOVs should mimic blur and DOF similar to the beauty. But they will not get rid of the fundamental problem with mattes when they are partly opaque. You would need to save out Deep EXRs (which Octane is capable of) to apply mattes to the right part of overlapping pixels of transparent / blurred objects. Thank you very much for your kind words. Making a truly good masterclass is a lot of work that I sort of shy away from. But never say never ;-)
