✔ Music to my ears. I bought a GTHO Phase 2 (Metallic blue) in September 1969 from McCleod Ford (Rockdale NSW) (I was in the ARMY by end of January 1971) My dad freaked out, as the car cost half as much as an average house in those days. My sister learned to drive in it, eventually I sold it to her. Now she drives like the Devil and can make quick decisions. By end of 1971 my dad traded the family XT Falcon on to a 351 XY Fairmont.

Watching this again in late 2023 and it's still one of the all-time best race videos on KZbin. You take the worlds toughest/greatest race track, add cars of wildly differing performance, old cars who's suspension was designed by Satan himself, mix it together with the sound of fury, you have some of the greatest racing ever seen on this planet. J.C. Kohle get outta here! I own a genuine Holden muscle car and this thing would tear an a9x a new a hole. No 308 ever caught an xy. Even hg-hk’s weren’t real competition. As for e38’s and e49’s, they may have been as fast as a phase 3 on 3.0:1’s down the strip, but what about the optional 3.5’s or 3.9’s?! Bill Bourke built them to wreak havoc and that’s exactly what they did. High comp 351’s with solid cams and a driveline that simply wouldn’t break. There’s a very good reason that a real phase 3 is the most expensive Aussie muscle car of them all.

Absolutely brilliant !! Was great to see all the older cars I grew up with. Just pure nostalgia for me with the sounds of the HO's v8 and then the slight pause on the up change because of the old manual "H" pattern box. Watching the driver dealing with the basic limitations of the car with no ABS, traction control, computers or high tech suspension/chassis geometry. Awesome to watch the other cars all dicing for a position and seeing the lighter ones go well over the top while losing out on the straights to cars like the GT. I know this is an old upload but thanks for posting. I'll be watching it more than once!

I only know the track as a video game - 'cos I'm living near Brands Hatch, SE England. To ride in the big V8 was heaven -- seeing loadsa cars from my youth just added to it. Great vid - looks like a great day - well driven Matt Mcgrath (y)

Most days it is a public road, speed limit 60kmh / 35mph. You need to drive it yourself to fully appreciate the racing. Off the mountain, it just drops out from under you. Scary stuff at race speeds. World class circuit.

Thanks! I watched it again (and again....) and at the end of the video the chequered flag comes out, obvious if I'd thought a bit more - he was 3rd... I even have the whole thing on my iPod now

That 2nd lap. The first corner had me glaring at the screen. The best video I've watched for ages around Mt Panorama. Sad too watch supercars these days.

A stock XY GTHO Phase III could do 145mph off the showroom floor. They had a rev limiter which was set at 6150 revs (but the cars setup to race, obviously had the limiter removed). The Mt Panorama track at Bathurst is incredible to drive around in a road car. The change in elevation has to be driven to be believed. Go over 'Skyline' on top of the mountain & down into 'The Dipper' & it feels like the car is going to break in half. Going down 'Conrod' is an experience like no other. I was there when it was still a race with all categories in one & a driver (Mike Bergman) who was driving a Mercedes, got airborne going over the 'hump' on Conrod, the fire extinguisher in the car came loose & smashed the windscreen which gave him no vision & he crashed into the side barrier, which claimed his life. Which is why the chaise was put in. The cars of this era 2000's are hitting 300km per hour down Conrod. It truly is a spectacular sight to see if you ever get the chance. I think Bathurst is a 'bucket list' event for a motor racing fan.

Great Stuff ! Times gone by of yesterday ! I Remember those Times,Oh so we'll of all the Ford boys of Moffit,French Gibson ,Goss ,Carter & a few others as well ,But never in my Life will I forget in 1971 the GT HO Phase 3 when Moffit Cleaned them all Up ? I was at the mountain when He Set the fastest time in Shoot out for Pole ! Came inn & was Speechless,Could not talk because he was So fired Up & travelled at breakneck Speed Up & over the Mountain for that Time of the Seventies ? And during the Race drove around the Racecourse with the Sun Herald in the grill in front of the Radiator ! And just Shattered the Field ! Something I did not see before or ever after ? The Sound of these Cars in my mind will never be Replaced ? Thank U Sir for the Video & the Reminder ,Spectacular ?

I'm not even a Ford fan, but hearing this monster howl at full revs is still a beautiful thing. You would have to be a certain level of nuts to race one though. Although they do better than the average American muscle car for braking and handling, "not much better" are words that immediately spring to mind. To think those beasts used to hit the track with ROAD tyres!

So well built, well balanced, no understeer nor oversteer, didn't slack off on uphill corners. The only place where muscle cars can handle, Australia.
