✔ Music to my ears. I bought a GTHO Phase 2 (Metallic blue) in September 1969 from McCleod Ford (Rockdale NSW) (I was in the ARMY by end of January 1971) My dad freaked out, as the car cost half as much as an average house in those days. My sister learned to drive in it, eventually I sold it to her. Now she drives like the Devil and can make quick decisions. By end of 1971 my dad traded the family XT Falcon on to a 351 XY Fairmont.

Watching this again in late 2023 and it's still one of the all-time best race videos on KZbin. J.C. Kohle get outta here! I own a genuine Holden muscle car and this thing would tear an a9x a new a hole. No 308 ever caught an xy. Even hg-hk’s weren’t real competition. As for e38’s and e49’s, they may have been as fast as a phase 3 on 3.0:1’s down the strip, but what about the optional 3.5’s or 3.9’s?! Bill Bourke built them to wreak havoc and that’s exactly what they did. High comp 351’s with solid cams and a driveline that simply wouldn’t break. There’s a very good reason that a real phase 3 is the most expensive Aussie muscle car of them all.

Just pure nostalgia for me with the sounds of the HO's v8 and then the slight pause on the up change because of the old manual "H" pattern box. Watching the driver dealing with the basic limitations of the car with no ABS, traction control, computers or high tech suspension/chassis geometry. Awesome to watch the other cars all dicing for a position and seeing the lighter ones go well over the top while losing out on the straights to cars like the GT. A stock XY GTHO Phase III could do 145mph off the showroom floor. They had a rev limiter which was set at 6150 revs (but the cars setup to race, obviously had the limiter removed). The Mt Panorama track at Bathurst is incredible to drive around in a road car. The change in elevation has to be driven to be believed. Go over 'Skyline' on top of the mountain & down into 'The Dipper' & it feels like the car is going to break in half. Going down 'Conrod' is an experience like no other. I was there when it was still a race with all categories in one & a driver (Mike Bergman) who was driving a Mercedes, got airborne going over the 'hump' on Conrod, the fire extinguisher in the car came loose & smashed the windscreen which gave him no vision & he crashed into the side barrier, which claimed his life. Which is why the chaise was put in. The cars of this era 2000's are hitting 300km per hour down Conrod. It truly is a spectacular sight to see if you ever get the chance. I think Bathurst is a 'bucket list' event for a motor racing fan.
