Really nice and helpful tutorial.. can´t believe this was made in 2010 :D

This is a rather interesting tutorial. I haven't yet seen this covered anywhere else, and quite a shame really. It seems like a great optimizing tool especially when talking about dark spots. It does have a bit of troubles when dealing with ceilings that are also floors but overall a nice bit. Thanks Silverfish!

@DavideProduction2 I'm really glad you think so! Thanks! :)

@AguyinaRPG There should be no problem with ceilings that are also floors. Just make sure that you select the individual face you want to change the lightmap scale on and not the whole brush and you should be fine. Glad you liked it! :)

@ZPS0 You need to add one green, one red and one yellow light and then set up some input/output stuff that turns one of the lights on while turning the other two off in regular intervals. When it comes to alarm lights, that really depends on what kind of alarm light you want (pulsating, spinning etc.).
@Silwerfish14 жыл бұрын
@ZPS0 That's not too simple to create, you can try using light_dynamic entities, parent them to a func_rotating. You could also create spinning brushes that look like light beams that come out of the light. Or maybe a combination of both? I've never done this myself so I don't know what looks good, you'll have to do some experimenting.

@lokisonline It's often a good idea to save calculating the lighting until the end of the production of your map to save a lot of compile time.

HI! Really cool tutorials! Congratz! Just one question: how do you use a second window to look your new lights without ReRun Map? You pop up a second window on 0:58 where you look your new lights witouht recompile.. or better without reload HL2. Thx in advance!
@Silwerfish13 жыл бұрын
@lokisonline I simply had the map compiled and running since before, there is no way to reliably check your lighting without compiling your map as far as I know.
@Silwerfish14 жыл бұрын
@SneakySoft Shouldn't affect them as far as I know. You can't change lightmap scale on models.

@dak1862c The lighting in the Source engine is pre-calculated so you can have as many lights as you want in your level and at any detail without loosing any FPS what so ever (unless those are dynamic lights of course). To increase performance, try cutting down on the amount of advanced models you use in an area, and make sure that the player can't see too much from any one place. I have made a couple of tutorials on optimization, so check those out.

oh.. so no "special effect" :( Yu have also to rerun the game engine? I'm starting to do Left4dead2 maps.. and each time i have to run again the game engine (half a minute each time) so a lot of time wasted. thx a lot for the answer and the tutorials ;)

This doesn't have any effect on those textures as shadows and such isn't calculated on them at all.
