In this episode, we compare Pashto and Persian, exploring the similarities between the two languages with a list of words, phrases, and sentences. There are many similarities between the two languages, but are they similar enough to be intelligible to one another?

Persian (Farsi) and Pashto are both Indo-European languages and are both classified as Indo-Iranian. Persian is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, as well as other parts of the Middle East, Central and South Asia. The Persian language has also led to the formation of several newer languages in West Asia, Europe, Central Asia, and South Asia. For centuries prior to the British colonization, Persian was widely used as a second language in the Indian subcontinent. Pashto is the language of the Pashtuns, an Eastern Iranian language, and one of the two official languages of Afghanistan. It is also spoken in the west and northwest parts of Pakistan.

Shahrzad continues to perform wonderfully 8 months into the pregnancy. This will most likely be her last appearance in a language video prior to the birth of our daughter. Enjoy the video and contact us on Instagram for any feedback or suggestions: Shahrzad: instagram.com/shahrzad.pe Bahador: instagram.com/BahadorAlast Ps. Based on a few of your suggestions, the definition of the word does not appear on the screen prior to the participants guessing. This way the audience can play along as well.

Pashtuns have always been nice to Persians, maybe the Persian could try being nice to Pashtuns for once. Last tjme I checked Pashtuns werent trying to commit language genocide against farsi speakers in Afghanistan...thats why most Pashtuns dont mind learning Farsi cuz we are open minded people, Maybe Persians shoudl try to stop belittling Pakhtuns for speaking their langauage, which is the only thing that we have that protects our Jewish heritage

THIS is the point I was trying to make when I commented on the Persian vs Urdu video you guys made. A Pashtun from Pakistan or a Pashto speaker will understand Farsi words much much more than a Punjabi person or Urdu speaking person from Pakistan. The amount of silly comments I received for my comment was shocking... Both Farsi and Pashto are Iranic languages - there are BOUND to be massive similarities....

Well said mate! the funny thing is, people are jumping about on how similar Urdu and Farsi is while only about 13% of Pakistan's speaks Urdu as a first language. Its not even native to Pakistan, Pashto, Baluchi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Shina, Khawar etc should be made the National languages and leave Urdu as a second language. Native languages should come first!
@junadium
@junadium 6 жыл бұрын
When taking into account language classifications, roots (as you are talking about) and development of words, my statement is correct. As I have previously stated, Farsi and Pashto are both Iranic languages, Urdu is not. Urdu draws its vocabulary heavily from Farsi, it's vocabulary does not stem from Farsi as it belongs to another language sub-family. Over 90% of Urdu verbs are Prakrit in origin. That does not go to say that a person who is well versed in Urdu and thus its heavily drawn Farsi vocabulary will not be able to understand such words. However when it comes to sentence formations, grammar usage, Urdu is nothing like Farsi, whereas Pashto being in the same language sub-family as Farsi will have much much more similarities. English, Dutch, German are all Germanic languages they share vocabulary but most importantly the grammatical formation of sentences. This is in stark difference to French and Italian which are Romance languages and so have different grammatical formations. English, however draws a large part of its vocabulary from Latin which is also a Romance language, therefore there are a lot of words which are similar in English, French, Italian. However German uses the Germanic root words for many such words as opposed to Latin root words that English uses. Being connected to Urdu is a political or emotional way of looking at it - it has no bearing whatsoever on the actual language. Urdu and Hindi are both the same languages, however depending on your politics, if you are Pakistani or Muslim in India your Khariboli will draw vocabulary from Farsi and Arabic. If you are a Hindu in India your Khariboli will draw vocabulary from Sanskrit, however the verbs in both remain Prakrit. I do not have any political agenda here, I have nothing to do with India/Pakistan politics. I am a linguist and anthropologist. My statements are based on scientific facts.

Some made up theories on the names of days in Pashto. 1. Since Friday is the holy day of the week and Thursday leads into Friday - 'Ziyarat' (pilgrimage into the holy day). 2. And since Saturday is a weekend - nothing to do. I.e. empty time = 'Khali'. BAM!

I agrre with You. Unfortunately, here in Pakistan we Pashtun learn Urdu and English. The education system here doesn't allow us to study Pashto language the history of Pashtuns and their descendants their leader like Khshal khan khattak Ahmed Shah Bacha Khan, we only studied mughals Hindu sub continent Muhammad bin Qasim and Jinnah. That is the reason that our people cannot speak the exact Pashto. Now it is mixed up with Urdu and English. Many of us, have seen the Pashtuns of Peshawar and Quetta, while talking they use English and Urdu words.

Maryam Farsiani we don't have the same letters in English language as we have in Pashto language. That is the reason we try to put two letters to make the sound nearly to the letter we have in our language. The letter which we use writing "Pashtoon" or "pukhtoon" is to be pronounced between "sh" and "kh". And also most of the Pashtoons cannot pronounce it or they cannot pronounce it easily. People in eastern and southeast Afghanistan pronounce it like "pakhtoon or pukhtoon" and the people who are living in southwest or southern Afghanistan pronounce it like "sh". But in the writing system and literature of the language, IT is to be written with the same letter in every region, you can call it standard pashto. And PATHAN is a synonym of the Pashtoon mostly used by indians and pakistanis. (ش) پشتون Pashtoon or Pushtoon (ښ) پښتون (خ) پختون Pukhtoon or Pakhtoon In standard pashto(in all books and government documents....) it is to be written as the 2nd word (the middle one). Hope you understand the way I explained it. If you still have any question feel free to ask me.

To answer the question posed at 12:05, "Why is Thursday called Ziarat", the reason is because traditionally people visited the graveyard on Thursday, so it became known as the "day of ziarat". - Khali ("empty") for Saturday is a reference to the Jewish day of Sabbath. - Pinzum ("fifth") for Tuesday is the fifth day of the week if you start with Friday as the first day. - Jumma is obviously from the Arabic. This is my understanding.

@RedRose7997 That's because Kandahar used to be part of the Safavid Empire and many people from Iran also settled there during the Afsharid rule which was not too long ago. The Pashto word for apple is "Mana" but Kandahris say "Seeb" which is the Persian word. So even though Kandahar is probably one of the most important cities in Pashtun history and also the only big city in Afghanistan where not 80%+ is able to speak Farsi, it has still more Persian influence than other Pashtun areas.

Winter is coming yes I know. I'm half Kandari and half Kunari so I know both dialects pretty well. And i also found out that the "kandari" dialect is very common in provinces like Quetta. I just meant, that the dialect of Pakistani Pashtuns (which is similar to the Pashto of east Afghanistan) is still different to the Afghan Pashto dialect. I understand a Pashto speaker from Pakistan but I would't talk like him. And I think that's because they mix a lot of Urdu words. That's why I think that an Afghan Pashtun who does not know Dari would still understand more than an Pakistani Pashtun. 😄

Winter is coming I know that the Pashtuns of KPK and generally Pakistan were Afghans (by nationality) a few decades ago. And I'm happy when someone refers himself as an Afghan. That makes me happy. But unfortunately there is a huge number of Pashtuns in Pakistan who don't see themselves as Afghans. But everyone has to decide by his own. This kind of synonyme "Afghan=Pashtun" is historically and not more available since the government of AFG said that everyone who lives in AFG is an Afghan. Tajiks, Hazara etc are also Afghans. Being Afghan is no more the name of a tribe or an ethnic group, it's also a nationality now. Ke Farsiwan ye, ya Uzbak, ya Hazara....dey ham Afghanan di. My cousins are all Half Pashtun and half Tajik and speak both Afghan languages, just because they are "half Pashtun" ...that don't make them "half Afghans"

Dari is like 12 century Farsi and Farsi is like modernized. Being Afghan I prefer the dari accent because it sounds more nice compared to Iranian accent which is super nasally

Hey Bahador, Great videos man, keep em coming. How about doing one on the similarities between Sindhi and Persian. With Sindhi being a language from Pakistan and spoken by Sindhi people in India as well. Im based in the GTA incase you need a native sindhi speaker for it. Best

Thursday is called "zyarat", cz it used to be kind of a cultural thing to visit the ancestorial graves on thursday, hence the original word "panjshabe" [which is present these days in old pushto speaking communiities btw] was changed to zyarat. Or else its still called as panjshambe.

Thursday is called ziarat because in older times people used to go to visit (ziarat) shrines of saints on Thursdays in the evening, spent the night there to attend little festivals, offer Friday prayer the next day and then come back to their hometowns. In some parts of Pakistan, especially in Punjab, there are still festivals (میلہ چراغاں ) on thursday nights at the shrines of saints, keeping up to the centuries old tradition of subcontinent.
